- Human infants typically utter their first words within the second half of their first year of life and about one year later they tend to take their first steps towards the full exploration of the linguistic combinatorial power of their ambient languages. From the overwhelming exposure to continuous speech utterances produced by other speakers, the infant derives the underlying linguistic structure of the utterances occurring in the ambient language. This chapter proposes a model of how general perception, production and interaction mechanisms may account for the typical process of early language development leading the infant to the discovery of words embedded in the continuous speech of the ambient language.
