- In this article, I shall outline the origins, contents and critiques of the Black Book of Communism, concentrating on the German and French debates. I argue that the Black Book of Communism marks a "French turn" in the German Historians' Debate of the 1980s - the influential Historikerstreit. I finish with some reflections on the German edition of the book - Das Schwarzbuch des Kommunismus - which includes two extra chapters on the GDR. These chapters reflect the new German anti-totalitarian consensus which has emerged after the fall of the Berlin wall.
