Samarbete i vård av människor med demens som vårdas i sina hem : en kvalitativ intervjustudie

• The importance of inter-professional co-operation in the care of the elderly is stressed in thelegislation. The aim of the present study was to obtain insight in home-care caregivers’ anddistrict nurses’ experiences of co-operation in the care of patients suffering from dementialiving in their own home. This was done by carrying out interviews with four home-carecaregivers and three district nurses with a minimum of one-year experiences from home careof patients suffering from dementia. The interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed. Thetexts were analysed by means of qualitative content analysis. Well functioning co-operationand not functioning co-operation emerged from the analysis. Well functioning co-operationwas characterised by trust, openness, honest communication, respect, shared responsibility,and experiences of being a member of a working team. Organisational forms that allow spacefor planned and regular staff-meetings and the continuity of caregivers promoted this kind ofco-operation. The not functioning co-operation was characterised by an absence of thesequalities. The co-operation was more focused on patients’ needs associated of caring forother problems and diseases than on needs of care arising from dementia. Eventualexperiences of common care planning were mentioned. It was obvious that the differentprofessionals were dependent upon each other when it came contributing to patients´ wellbeengand comfort and by gainging satisfaction from their daily work.KeywordDementia, nursing, home-care, social service, community health service, organisation,teamwork and cooperation.
