  • Given the notion of the scientific discource as a culture comparable to the world of social practices by wich we normally live, this culture might be seen as a structural process open to cultural critique by a defamiliarization process. This proces, t is stated, is initiated by a etrn to the conditions that helped to produce central categories that are recursively employed within the practice. It is further stated that, to be able to formulate a critique and a reconstruction of new, meaningful categories, it is important to de define the field of interest and to re-enact or re-live the conditions that can give meaning to this type of classification. Using an example from lithic analyses in Scandinavia during the past tree decades, it is shown how a tradition of categorization of lithic artefacts based on flint assemblages in southernmost Scandinavia has ben recursively recreatedin scientific education and thus has taken thee form of a culture. This construction of a scientific culture has involuntarily been employed to depress the unique character of the north Scandinavian, non-flint assemblages and has structured the interpretation of the north Scandinavian hunter-gatherer societies as a whole. By returning to the situations in which lithics are produced and used, it has been possible to break down the categories which served to disguise a meaningful pattern in the alte5rnative raw maerials and to further a new interpretation of therse materials in relation to their unique character.
