  • Background: The plan was to develop a web-based programme to support to children with uro-genital malformation and their families, to be used in a home setting. Method: A participatory design was employed following the approach in persons centered care (PCC) with a partnership between the children, their families and the research group. Results: The cooperation comprised a stepwise process back and forth between the research group, the children and the families. A professional web developer and an illustrator were employed during the process. The cooperation also included urotherapists and a pediatric urologist. The programme was built on stories about two children, their actions in different situations, with images to support the stories. Stories and images were discussed and developed within the group. The programme was made user friendly in accordance with the participants’ experiences. Situations of themes were created that met the goal of a larger project concerning person-centered, web-based learning support for preschool children with uro-genital malformation. These themes formed the basis of a two-way communication, using SKYPE, between the child and a web teacher. It was found for them in order; achieve full communication with the participating pre-school child. The design made it possible to evaluate the results of a learning support. Conclusions: A web-based programme useful for learning support was developed using participatory design. The programme was made for use in home settings, was user-friendly, and provided the content of the intervention giving support for the children and their families. Two-way communication is valuable in conversation with pre-school children but is also an important factor generally in the health care system.
