Aiming for Top Speed – Investigating a World Landspeed Record Atempt

• One area of world class motorsports in which the entrepreneurial, pioneering spirit of the creation and extraction of value from an environment (Anderson, 2007) can still be seen is in world land speed record events (WLSRs). WLSR attempts are similar to other forms of motorsport activity. They are very closely regulated by the international governing body (FIA/FIM), they have uncertain outcomes and evoke strongly emotional responses from their audiences. They also tend to be very expensive to put on. In other respects, they are quite different. There may be just one competitor who is responsible not only for developing his machine and driving it but who is also responsible for fundraising, preparing the track and organising the event. WLSR events are less corporatized, more ‘shoestring’, however and besides popular motorsport or historical literature (e.g. Jackson, 1971) not been in the focus of academic research. The purpose of our research is to approach this research gap and to highlight the entrepreneurial coordination and facilitation process of a WLSR event.
