Altering Mid-Gap Acceptor Levels by Morphology Tuning of Boron Doped Diamonds

- Hydrogen terminated diamond is a very promising material for high energy photocatalytic reactions1 owing to its large band gap(5.5 eV) and a unique capability of generating solvated electrons due to its negative electron affinity.2 However, a major limitation to the photoexcitation process to create solvated electrons is the need for deep UV illumination. Introducing unoccupied electronic states within the band gap of diamonds by doping with boron could provide a potential pathway for photoexcitation using visible light.Previous reports on HRTEM and EELS study of B doped polycrystalline and nanocrystalline diamonds provide insights into the local B environment.4,5,6,7 However, since these are primarily electron in-electron out techniques, they do not provide sufficient information about the existence of acceptor levels in the band gap of diamonds that are associated with boron doping. X-ray spectroscopy techniques have been shown to be sensitive to the acceptor levels arising due to boron doping.3 However, their physical origin still remains unclear.Here we use soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to probe the unoccupied electronic states at the carbon K edge in different boron-doped diamond materials, ranging from single crystal and polycrystalline film to diamond foam and nanodiamonds with different sizes. XAS of carbon K edges for the different B doped diamonds were characterized using partial fluorescence yield at the BESSY II synchrotron facility. Combining these results with density functional theory calculations, here we elucidate the contribution of the environment of boron to these mid gap acceptor states that vary with the morphology of diamonds. These results could have important implications on the selection of a suitable diamond based visible-light photocatalysts.

- The efficient analysis of spatio–temporal data, generated by moving objects, is an es-sential requirement for intelligent locationbased services. Spatio-temporal rules can befound by constructing spatio–temporal baskets, from which traditional association rulemining methods can discover spatio–temporal rules. When the items in the baskets arespatio–temporal identifiers and are derived from trajectories of moving objects, the discovered rules represent frequently travelled routes. For some applications, e.g., an intelligent ridesharing application, these frequent routes are only interesting if they are long and sharable, i.e., can potentially be shared by several users. This paper presents a database projection based method for efficiently extracting such long, sharable requent routes.The method prunes the search space by making use of the minimum length and sharable requirements and avoids the generation of the exponential number of subroutes of long routes. A SQL–based implementation is described, and experiments on real life data show the effectiveness of the method.

- Children and adolescents receiving services from two professional parties may obtain support with a coordinated individual plan (CIP). The Swedish law prescribes that CIP must incorporate service user participation. This study aims to explore children and parents’ experiences of participating in CIP-process to generate knowledge with practical implications of how children and parents may be involved in the CIP-process. A descriptive qualitative interview study with 13 service users was conducted during November 2014 to March 2016. Data were audio-recorded and transcribed, and further subjected to qualitative content analysis. Three main descriptive categories with six subcategories emerged. The category “Struggle for coordination” includes service users’ need for participation which are limited by professionals’ lack of consensus. The category “Alliance for coordination” points out the importance of relationship and personal support to accomplish functional coordination. The category “Structure for coordination” shows how the structure facilitate service user involvement on a high level. Service user involvement seemed limited by professionals’ actions, but could be facilitated by support of professionals working in the child’s daily life. Structured coordination seems to relieve the pressure on parents, as well as children, but CIP needs to be individually tailored to reach its full potential.
