- What happens when cultural analysis enters the world of applied research and academics become consultants working with corporations and public institutions? The divide between academic research and commercial ethnography has often hampered communication and critical exchanges between these two worlds. In this paper we look at the experiences of consultants, drawing on Danish and Swedish examples. What can we learn from them when it comes to organizing research under time pressure, communicating results and making people understand the potentials of cultural analysis? And how could consultants “out there” benefit from a continuing dialogue with their colleagues in Academia?

- L'étude culturelle des émotions se développe dans l'ethnologie contemporaine de la Suède. Cet article explore un contexte dans lequel les émotions sont souvent réprimées, voire « taboues » : le monde universitaire. Comment la jalousie, la fierté, la passion ou l'ennui sont-ils exprimés ou réprimés au quotidien ? Pourquoi le ton ironique est-il un style de communication si répandu parmi les enseignants-chercheurs ? L'article montre, à partir d'une plus vaste étude sur l'université, comment les sentiments s'inscrivent dans les situations les plus banales — la pause-café, les plaisanteries ou les attitudes corporelles adoptées au cours des séminaires de recherche. The cultural analysis of emotions is an expanding field in Swedish ethnology. Here we explore a setting, in which emotions often are repressed or taboo — that of our own Academic world. How are emotions like envy, pride, passion or boredom expressed or repressed in everyday university life ? Why is irony such an important style of communication among academics ? Using materials from a more general study of university, we explore how feelings are anchored in seemingly trivial situations, such as coffe break jokes or body language during research seminars. Die kulturanalytische Geflihlsforschung ist in der schwedischen Ethnologie stark im Kommen. Dieser Artikel widmet sich einem Bereich in dem die Gefühlswelt oft unterdrückt wird oder gänzlich tabuisiert ist — der Welt der Universität. In welcher Art und Weise spielen hier Eifersucht, Stolz, Leidenschaft oder Langeweile eine Rolle, werden sie ausgedrückt oder unterdrückt ? Warum ist gerade Ironie als stilistisches Mittel unter den Forschern so verbreitet ? Unter Rückgriff auf unterschiedliche Hilfsmittel soll gezeigt werden inwiefern Gefühle in gewöhnlichen Situationen — wie der Kaffeepause, in Seminaren, bei Scherzen oder durch die körperlichen Haltung ausgedrückt – eine Rolle spielen. Studiet av känslor är ett expanderande fält i svensk etnologi. Artikeln baserar sig på en stör re etnografisk Studie av vardagslivet i universitetsvärlden, här fokuserar vi på akademiska känslor i en institution där det känslomässiga ofta är tabuerat eller undertryckt. Hur uttrycks känslor som stolthet, avund, beundran och tristess i det akademiska livets olika situationer, frân kroppsspråket i en seminariediskussion till skämt under kaffepauserna ? Ett speciellt intresse ägnar vi ironin som viktigt akademiskt vapen.
