    • To our knowledge, no comprehensive, interdisciplinary initiatives have been taken to examine the role of genetic variants on patient-reported quality-of-life outcomes. The overall objective of this paper is to describe the establishment of an international and interdisciplinary consortium, the GENEQOL Consortium, which intends to investigate the genetic disposition of patient-reported quality-of-life outcomes. We have identified five primary patient-reported quality-of-life outcomes as initial targets: negative psychological affect, positive psychological affect, self-rated physical health, pain, and fatigue. The first tangible objective of the GENEQOL Consortium is to develop a list of potential biological pathways, genes and genetic variants involved in these quality-of-life outcomes, by reviewing current genetic knowledge. The second objective is to design a research agenda to investigate and validate those genes and genetic variants of patient-reported quality-of-life outcomes, by creating large datasets. During its first meeting, the Consortium has discussed draft summary documents addressing these questions for each patient-reported quality-of-life outcome. A summary of the primary pathways and robust findings of the genetic variants involved is presented here. The research agenda outlines possible research objectives and approaches to examine these and new quality-of-life domains. Intriguing questions arising from this endeavor are discussed. Insight into the genetic versus environmental components of patient-reported quality-of-life outcomes will ultimately allow us to explore new pathways for improving patient care. If we can identify patients who are susceptible to poor quality of life, we will be able to better target specific clinical interventions to enhance their quality of life and treatment outcomes.

  • Knowing Me, Knowing You - How Personality Traits Shape Invention Output

    • Literature on knowledge recombination has largely focused on inventors’ access to knowledge components to be recombined as a key determinant of their inventive performance. Research from psychology has shown that openness and extraversion, two personality traits, increase performance in tasks akin to knowledge recombination. We investigate how personality traits shape invention outcomes conditional on organizational knowledge context. We derive personality measures from a survey of 1,327 inventors and combine them with patent-based indicators of inventive performance. Our findings reveal how the relationship between personality and inventive output is moderated by knowledge context: the positive relationship between openness and invention output is stronger if organizational knowledge diversity is low. In contrast, extraversion negatively relates to invention output, but its effect is positively moderated by knowledge diversity.

    • We propose modifications to the Code such that use of a hyphen in the name of a fossil-genus is treated as an error to be corrected by deletion of the hyphen. This will circumvent the need to conserve the numerous de-hyphenated names against unused hyphenated forms. We propose changes to Art. 60 of the Code to allow this correction, and the addition of a phrase in Art. 20 to add clarity to the naming of fossil-genera.

    • This work investigated the improvement of ethanol production by engineered ethanologenic Escherichia coli to express the hemoglobin from the bacterium Vitreoscilla (VHb). Ethanologenic E. coli strain FBR5 and FBR5 transformed with the VHb gene in two constructs (strains TS3 and TS4) were grown in cheese whey (CW) medium at small and large scales, at both high and low aeration, or with whey powder (WP) or sugar beet molasses hydrolysate (SBMH) media at large scale and low aeration. Culture pH, cell growth, VHb levels, and ethanol production were evaluated after 48 h. VHb expression in TS3 and TS4 enhanced their ethanol production in CW (21–419%), in WP (17–362%), or in SBMH (48–118%) media. This work extends the findings that “VHb technology” may be useful for improving the production of ethanol from waste and byproducts of various sources.

  • Re-appraising interaction and process for industrial network research : The future plunging mirror hall metaphor

    • Constructivist and realist research is undertaken in the business relationship and network approach of the Industrial Marketing and Purchasing Group. These two divergent research perspectives seek a different form of contextual understanding vs. general knowledge. They are not incommensurable as one can gain insights from the other. But a researcher must know and understand both perspectives and sometimes be able to see when a writer is playing almost a middle ground to make a specific point. To provide a broader understanding of the ontological distinctions and their ramifications for researching and translating meanings concerning business networks we introduce the temporal mirror hall metaphor. We propose that: (i) researchers should avoid reading and understanding only a single research perspective, (ii) research is a social temporal process embedded in a research community, (iii) understanding different researcher perspectives is necessary for a constructivist scholar working in a world of realist education, and (iv) realist researchers need constructivist research to change and develop systematized theories. The paper extends specific advice to constructivist researchers undertaking longitudinal studies of interaction in business networks. Realist researchers will find intriguing the comparisons and refractions, as well as illusions, in the temporalities of the mirror hall.

    • The InAs(111)2x2 and InAs(($$$) over bar 111)1x1 surfaces have been studied with high resolution core level spectroscopy. For the InAs(($$$) over bar 111)1x1 surface both the In 4d and the As 3d core levels display strong surface core level shifts, while for the InAs(111)2x2 surface only the In 4d level shows a detectable surface shift. The results indicate that the InAs(($$$) over bar 111)1x1 surface is relaxed, with atom layer displacement extending to subsurface layers. Unexpectedly, we find no surface shifted anion core level for the InAs(111)2x2 surface.
