  • The Materiality as a Competence of Enterprise Transformation under the Perspective of Sustainability
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 7th International Workshop - Advances in Cleaner Production.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • competence of enterprise transformation in a sustainable conception. A secondary intention is listing and ranking other possible competencies that may change the enterprise scenery through Triple Bottom Line premises. The approach used to solve this gap is the Delphi research. This method is responsible for extracting a consensus among experts in this topic. To sort the abilities, the tool Qualtrics and the Mudge Method have been chosen. The last one has a goal of minimizing subjective factors that are inborn to human being’s routine, creating a more efficient decision-making process. As one of the main discoveries, this research found out 9 nine necessary competencies to make an enterprise transformation on the mentioned topic. Also, it was confirmed that the materiality can be deemed as one of these abilities, and that it can contribute to this selection and, therefore, help companies to reach their Sustainable Development Goals. The limitation of the study is in the absence of details on how to implement such competencies at the everyday enterprise routine. In the sense of being original, this paper is the first to broach the necessary competencies of transformation with the sustainable pillars and also when giving applicability to the newly developed definition of materiality.

  • Design e cidades: espaços públicos e a relação com a mobilidade urbana ativa (Design and cities: public spaces and the relationship with active urban mobility)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: VIII Simpósio de Design Sustentável/Symposium on Sustainable Design. - : Departamento de Design da UFPR. - 9786584565029
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents the exploratory phase of the research project "Design strategies for the promotion of active urban mobility" developed in the Scientific Initiation Program of the Design Department of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR). The work began to be developed with weekly discussions, reading background texts and mapping individual paths in search of connection points. During the process, it was used the tool of asystematic bibliographic review from keywords related to active mobility, urban furniture, pedestrians and bicycles. The search helped identify design strategies in projects, as well as their relationship with city law and development, urban planning, and social innovation. The results allowed the identification of convergent concepts about the theme, reinforcing the importance of the practical, aesthetic and symbolic functions of urban furniture in cities for its effective use. These concepts provide theoretical subsidies for the development of the next stage of the research, the field phase.

  • Requalificação urbana em áreas contaminadas na cidade de São Paulo
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Estudos Avancados. - 1806-9592 .- 0103-4014. ; 28:82, s. 129-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Metropolitan areas face increasing problems of urban sprawl. Simultaneously suffer an emptying of properties and depending on the prior use, may exhibit contamination of soil and ground water. The article aims to evaluate the urban density, availability of sanitation infrastructure and socioeconomic status of the neighborhood to check the potential for urban redevelopment and reoccupation of contaminated areas in the city of São Paulo. Through GIS the Cetesb database for the year 2010 with the addresses of the contaminated areas was georeferenced and census tracts with information Censo/2010 as household density, access the sewage system, garbage collection, and income were dichotomized between those with and no contaminated areas. The differences between of median and quartiles of these variables were compared. The city had 1,190 registered as contaminated areas, distributed in 5.1% of its census tracts. Census tracts with contaminated areas have lower household density and greater access to the sewage system, solid waste collection and performance compared to sectors without contaminated area. The census tract with contaminated areas have higher sanitation infrastructure, however, have a lower density of households. Despite the effort to reoccupy these areas, there is still great potential for growth in these areas in the city.

  • Design ativismo ou design ativista? (Design activism or activist design?)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Estudos em Design. - : Estudos em Design. - 0104-4249 .- 1983-196X. ; 29:3, s. 52-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to discuss terminologies from a design field area, activist design or design activism, trying to stablish a recommendation for its use in Portuguese. This field area confronts the status quo in its practices, intending to influence public policies and cultural practices to reach fairer societies. To that, the author conducted a narrative literature review in canonical design texts which at some point confront the usual design practices and in the pioneer authors who used these terms worldwide and locally to understand the difference among them. A systematic literature review was also part of the research strategy to identify the prevailing use of the terms at the existent published works. The results point out that the term design activism is prevalent in English publications and activist design is used in the Portuguese ones. Based on the findings and discussions, the author recommends the use of the term design activism also in Portuguese, since it covers better its usage practices and meanings.

  • Modelo para promoção da mobilidade urbana ativa por bicicleta: uma abordagem do design de serviços para o comportamento sustentável. (Model for promoting active urban mobility by bicycle: a service design approach for sustainable behaviour)
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The population growth associated with an accelerated urbanization process - with more than 50% global people living in cities - are weighting negatively on social and ambiental developing aspects. Among the compromised areas is the urban mobility, where the priority has been given to motorized ways of transports other than active mobility. Moreover, these problems are exacerbated at places where many people attend simultaneously such as shopping centers, schools and universities. As long as it is possible to understand the design as a requisite for promoting more sustainable lifestyles and improving the quality of life, connecting and integrating useful knowledge and applying them to solve real problems, the research question that arise is: How to use design strategies to promote active and sustainable urban mobility by bicycle at universities? Henceforth, a perspective about the engagement of design as agent for sustainable development is presented and, existent design strategies on sustainable behavior and service design were used to develop a model to promote active and sustainable mobility by bicycle at universities. The chosen research method to achieve the goal was the Action Design Research (ADR) in four phases: 1) problem formulation; 2) building, intervention and evaluation; 3) reflection and learning and 4) formalization of learning. The ADR enabled solving the presented problem in a practical way, making a model artifact as result, besides the theoretical contributions. On the problem formulation (1) phase data collection was carried out through literature review and systematic literature review, as well as an analysis of the mobility at UFPR in Curitiba and also the mapping and analysis of similar artifacts. From this phase some model's requirements emerged, as well as some research gaps. The phases building, intervention and evaluation (2) and reflection and learning (3) were the main cycle for the better solution for the presented problem through model development and iteration. The preliminary model solution applied strategies of Service Design and Design for Sustainable Behavior (DfSB) aiming to promote change of travel behavior of the participants. To verify the effectiveness of the model in its various aspects (adoption of design strategies, application in the university community, promotion of behavior change, satisfaction of participants and dissemination of results), the field phase of the research used as strategies of data collection: questionnaires, interviews, focus group, mobile ethnography and cultural probes. After five refinement iteration cycles, the last version of the proposed model was considered a satisfactory solution for the presented problem, as it was validated as the effective application of the Service Design and DfSB strategies to which, according to the data obtained, promoted changes in habits and behaviors among the participants. Afterwards, the final considerations regarding the goals, research method and suggestions for future work were described.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to report an integrative learning activity developed in the Product Design undergraduate course at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The project theme was the development of personal protective equipment for children, and the activity was planned to integrate teaching (undergraduate students), research (master and PhD students) and extension (external community). Its development adopted a four - stage design method (informational, conceptual, detailing and communication), and was characterized as emergency remote teaching experience, thru the use of technologies such as videoconferences and planning and collaboration tools for remote teamwork. In addition to members of the UFPR internal community, professors and students from the Federal University of Ceará and members of a partner company, ÖUS, also participated in the activity. The activity resulted in four design solutions with potential for implementation, one of which is already in production. In addition, it had a very positive impact on the integration between professors and students, and between the involved institutions. Based on the evaluation of this experience, we believe that this format has the potential to enable the implementation of extension activities in the course curriculum.
