  • Basin-Scale Daily Drought Prediction Using Convolutional Neural Networks in Fenhe River Basin, China
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Atmosphere. - 2073-4433. ; 15:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drought is a natural disaster that occurs globally and can damage the environment, disrupt agricultural production and cause large economic losses. The accurate prediction of drought can effectively reduce the impacts of droughts. Deep learning methods have shown promise in drought prediction, with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) being particularly effective in handling spatial information. In this study, we employed a deep learning approach to predict drought in the Fenhe River (FHR) basin, taking into account the meteorological conditions of surrounding regions. We used the daily SAPEI (Standardized Antecedent Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index) as the drought evaluation index. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of the CNN model in predicting drought events 1~10 days in advance. We evaluated the predictions made by the model; the average Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) between the predicted and true values for the next 10 days was 0.71. While the prediction accuracy slightly decreased with longer prediction lengths, the model remained stable and effective in predicting heavy drought events that are typically difficult to predict. Additionally, key meteorological variables for drought predictions were identified, and we found that training the CNN model with these key variables led to higher prediction accuracy than training it with all variables. This study approves an effective deep learning approach for daily drought prediction, particularly when considering the meteorological conditions of surrounding regions.

  • Fine-mapping analysis including over 254 000 East Asian and European descendants identifies 136 putative colorectal cancer susceptibility genes
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Nature. - 2041-1723. ; 15:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified more than 200 common genetic variants independently associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, but the causal variants and target genes are mostly unknown. We sought to fine-map all known CRC risk loci using GWAS data from 100,204 cases and 154,587 controls of East Asian and European ancestry. Our stepwise conditional analyses revealed 238 independent association signals of CRC risk, each with a set of credible causal variants (CCVs), of which 28 signals had a single CCV. Our cis-eQTL/mQTL and colocalization analyses using colorectal tissue-specific transcriptome and methylome data separately from 1299 and 321 individuals, along with functional genomic investigation, uncovered 136 putative CRC susceptibility genes, including 56 genes not previously reported. Analyses of single-cell RNA-seq data from colorectal tissues revealed 17 putative CRC susceptibility genes with distinct expression patterns in specific cell types. Analyses of whole exome sequencing data provided additional support for several target genes identified in this study as CRC susceptibility genes. Enrichment analyses of the 136 genes uncover pathways not previously linked to CRC risk. Our study substantially expanded association signals for CRC and provided additional insight into the biological mechanisms underlying CRC development.

  • Cyp2a6 activity and cigarette consumption interact in smoking-related lung cancer susceptibility
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Cancer Research. - : American Association For Cancer Research (AACR). - 0008-5472 .- 1538-7445. ; 84:4, s. 616-625
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cigarette smoke, containing both nicotine and carcinogens, causes lung cancer. However, not all smokers develop lung cancer, highlighting the importance of the interaction between host susceptibility and environmental exposure in tumorigenesis. Here, we aimed to delineate the interaction between metabolizing ability of tobacco carcinogens and smoking intensity in mediating genetic susceptibility to smoking-related lung tumorigenesis. Single-variant and gene-based associations of 43 tobacco carcinogen–metabolizing genes with lung cancer were analyzed using summary statistics and individual-level genetic data, followed by causal inference of Mendelian randomization, mediation analysis, and structural equation modeling. Cigarette smoke–exposed cell models were used to detect gene expression patterns in relation to specific alleles. Data from the International Lung Cancer Consortium (29,266 cases and 56,450 controls) and UK Biobank (2,155 cases and 376,329 controls) indicated that the genetic variant rs56113850 C>T located in intron 4 of CYP2A6 was significantly associated with decreased lung cancer risk among smokers (OR = 0.88, 95% confidence interval = 0.85–0.91, P = 2.18 X 10-16), which might interact (Pinteraction = 0.028) with and partially be mediated (ORindirect = 0.987) by smoking status. Smoking intensity accounted for 82.3% of the effect of CYP2A6 activity on lung cancer risk but entirely mediated the genetic effect of rs56113850. Mechanistically, the rs56113850 T allele rescued the downregulation of CYP2A6 caused by cigarette smoke exposure, potentially through preferential recruitment of transcription factor helicase-like transcription factor. Together, this study provides additional insights into the interplay between host susceptibility and carcinogen exposure in smoking-related lung tumorigenesis.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: New Journal of Chemistry. - : ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY. - 1144-0546 .- 1369-9261.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Intracellular viscosity plays an important role in regulating cellular morphology and physiology and is closely related to a host of diseases. Especially, the changes in mitochondrial viscosity will cause some common diseases such as hyperlipidemia, Alzheimer's disease and cancer. In this work, we report the design of a red-emissive molecular rotor for the detection of mitochondrial viscosity in live cells. The probe showed fascinating performance, such as specific targeting to mitochondria, high sensitivity to viscosity, and rapid fluorescence response, especially the dual response mode of fluorescence intensity and fluorescence lifetime. By using this probe, we realized monitoring of the mitochondrial viscosity variations in live cells under different physiological processes. Our study offers an opportunity to discover potential tools for mitochondria-related physiology and pathology investigation. A D-pi-A typed fluorescence lifetime probe for sensitively detecting viscosity has been designed and synthesized. BSOH has been successfully applied to real-time monitoring mitochondrial viscosity in live cells by fluorescence lifetime imaging.

  • Lowering the kinetic barrier via enhancing electrophilicity of surface oxygen to boost acidic oxygen evolution reaction
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Matter. - 2590-2393 .- 2590-2385. ; 7:3, s. 1330-1343
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for many renewable energy conversion and storage technologies. However, the high energy required to break the strong covalent O-H bond of H2O in acidic media results in sluggish OER kinetics. Here, we report the critical role of iron in a new family of iron-containing yttrium ruthenate (Y2-xFexRu2O7-δ) electrocatalysts in highly increasing the electrophilicity of surface oxygen, leading to a significant reduction of the kinetics barrier by 33%, thus an exceptional OER mass activity of 1,021 A· up to 12.4 and 7.7 times that of Y2Ru2O7-δ and RuO2, respectively. Introducing iron reduces the Mulliken atomic charge on the O sites in the generated Ru-O-Fe structure, thereby facilitating the acid-base nucleophilic assault from H2O and reducing the free energy on the rate-determining step of OER. This work provides an effective strategy to reduce the kinetics barrier to achieve highly efficient and economic OER in acidic conditions.

  • Effects of limestone calcined clay, fly ash and seawater on early hydrating behavior, mechanical properties, microscopic performance and sustainability of eco-friendly cement-based pastes
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry. - 1388-6150 .- 1588-2926. ; 149:5, s. 2087-2107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In some remote areas or islands, the availability of freshwater for infrastructures has encountered a huge shortage, which has prompted more researchers to explore the possibility of applying seawater to design green concrete or composites. This study investigated the mechanical and microstructural properties of cement-based pastes (CBPs) mixed with fly ash (FA) and limestone calcined clay (LC2) and seawater at different curing ages. The early-age hydration, exothermic evolution, hydration phase, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), pore distribution, microstructure and sustainability of CBPs were investigated. It was observed that seawater has an accelerating effect on OPC hydration and can significantly enhance the early UCS. Combining with seawater, the pozzolanic activity of LC2/FA can result in generating more C–S–H gels. Therefore, the combination of LC2 or FA with seawater can obtain better the mechanical properties of CBPs. Besides, the micro characteristics of CBPs are observed by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, mercury-pressure porosimetry and scanning electron microscopy technologies, and it is revealed that seawater and SCMs play significant role in the micro morphology of CBPs due to silicate, semicarbonate, calcium aluminate, C–S–H gels. This also leads to a denser and more complex microstructure, which lowers the total porosity, obviously leads to transferring macropores into gel pores and enhances the UCS. Additionally, CBPs with FA or LC2 or seawater show about 1/6–1/5 lower embodied energy (EE), 1/6–1/5 lower embodied carbon (EC) and 1/6–1/4 lower cost than the typical CBPs with freshwater, CBPs with SCMs and seawater are even more perfect in terms of EE, EC and cost per unit UCS. Overall, this work assesses the feasibility of adding LC2/FA and seawater to CBPs, and also can provide a better insight into the applications of seawater cementitious composites for marine infrastructures.

  • Monolithically integrated high-density vertical organic electrochemical transistor arrays and complementary circuits
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: NATURE ELECTRONICS. - : NATURE PORTFOLIO. - 2520-1131.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) can be used to create biosensors, wearable devices and neuromorphic systems. However, restrictions in the micro- and nanopatterning of organic semiconductors, as well as topological irregularities, often limit their use in monolithically integrated circuits. Here we show that the micropatterning of organic semiconductors by electron-beam exposure can be used to create high-density (up to around 7.2 million OECTs per cm2) and mechanically flexible vertical OECT arrays and circuits. The energetic electrons convert the semiconductor exposed area to an electronic insulator while retaining ionic conductivity and topological continuity with the redox-active unexposed areas essential for monolithic integration. The resulting p- and n-type vertical OECT active-matrix arrays exhibit transconductances of 0.08-1.7 S, transient times of less than 100 mu s and stable switching properties of more than 100,000 cycles. We also fabricate vertically stacked complementary logic circuits, including NOT, NAND and NOR gates. Micropatterning of organic semiconductors by electron-beam exposure can be used to create vertical organic electrochemical transistor arrays and complementary logic circuits with densities of up to 7.2 million transistors per cm2.

  • A comparative study of satellite altimetry-based and DEM-based methods for estimating lake water volume changes
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Water Science and Technology. - 0273-1223. ; 89:8, s. 1913-1927
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study compared two different methods, the satellite altimetry-based and DEM (digital elevation model)-based, for estimating lake water volume changes. We focused on 34 lakes in China as the testing sites to compare the two methods for lake water volume changes from 2005 to 2020. The satellite altimetry-based method used water levels provided by the DAHITI (Database for Hydrological Time Series of Inland Waters) data and surface areas derived from Landsat imagery. The DEM-based method used the SRTM DEM data in combination with Landsat-derived lake extents. Our results showed a high degree of consistency in lake water volume changes estimated between the two methods (R2 . 0.90), but each method has its limitations. In terms of temporal coverage, the satellite altimetry-based method with the DAHITI data is limited by missing water level data in certain periods. The performance of the DEM-based method in extracting lake shore boundaries in regions with flat terrains (slope,1.5°) is not satisfactory. The DEM-based method has complete regional applicability (100%) in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) Lake Region, yet its effectiveness drops significantly in the Xinjiang and Eastern China Plain Lake Regions, with applicability rates of 50 and 40%, respectively.

  • Intrauterine and early postnatal exposures to submicron particulate matter and childhood allergic rhinitis : A multicity cross-sectional study in China
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Environmental Research. - : Elsevier. - 0013-9351 .- 1096-0953. ; 247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Airborne particulate matter pollution has been linked to occurrence of childhood allergic rhinitis (AR). However, the relationships between exposure to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter <= 1 µm (PM1) during early life (in utero and first year of life) and the onset of childhood AR remain largely unknown. This study aims to investigate potential associations of in utero and first-year exposures to size-segregated PMs, including PM1, PM1-2.5, PM2.5, PM2.5-10, and PM10, with childhood AR.Methods: We investigated 29286 preschool children aged 3-6 years in 7 Chinese major cities during 2019-2020 as the Phase II of the China Children, Families, Health Study. Machine learning-based space-time models were utilized to estimate early-life residential exposure to PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 at 1 x 1-km resolutions. The concentrations of PM1-2.5 and PM2.5-10 were calculated by subtracting PM1 from PM2.5 and PM2.5 from PM10, respectively. Multiple mixed-effects logistic models were used to assess the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of childhood AR associated with per 10-µg/m3 increase in exposure to particulate air pollution during in utero period and the first year of life. Results: Among the 29286 children surveyed (mean +/- standard deviation, 4.9 +/- 0.9 years), 3652 (12.5%) were reported to be diagnosed with AR. Average PM1 concentrations during in utero period and the first year since birth were 36.3 +/- 8.6 µg/m3 and 33.1 +/- 6.9 µg/m3, respectively. Exposure to PM1 and PM2.5 during pregnancy and the first year of life was associated with an increased risk of AR in children, and the OR estimates were higher for each 10-µg/m3 increase in PM1 than for PM2.5 (e.g., 1.132 [95% CI: 1.022-1.254] vs. 1.079 [95% CI: 1.014-1.149] in pregnancy; 1.151 [95% CI: 1.014-1.306] vs. 1.095 [95% CI: 1.008-1.189] in the first year of life). No associations were observed between AR and both pre- and post-natal exposure to PM1-2.5, indicating that PM1 rather than PM1-2.5 contributed to the association between PM2.5 and childhood AR. In trimester-stratified analysis, childhood AR was only found to be associated with exposure to PM1 (OR = 1.077, 95% CI: 1.027-1.128), PM2.5 (OR = 1.048, 95% CI: 1.018-1.078), and PM10 (OR = 1.032, 95% CI: 1.007-1.058) during the third trimester of pregnancy. Subgroup analysis suggested stronger PM-AR associations among younger (<5 years old) and winter-born children. Conclusions: Prenatal and postnatal exposures to ambient PM1 and PM2.5 were associated with an increased risk of childhood AR, and PM2.5-related hazards could be predominantly attributed to PM1. These findings highlighted public health significance of formulating air quality guideline for ambient PM1 in mitigating children's AR burden caused by particulate air pollution.

  • Immunoglobulin class-switch recombination: Mechanism, regulation, and related diseases
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: MEDCOMM. - 2688-2663. ; 5:8
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Maturation of the secondary antibody repertoire requires class-switch recombination (CSR), which switches IgM to other immunoglobulins (Igs), and somatic hypermutation, which promotes the production of high-affinity antibodies. Following immune response or infection within the body, activation of T cell-dependent and T cell-independent antigens triggers the activation of activation-induced cytidine deaminase, initiating the CSR process. CSR has the capacity to modify the functional properties of antibodies, thereby contributing to the adaptive immune response in the organism. Ig CSR defects, characterized by an abnormal relative frequency of Ig isotypes, represent a rare form of primary immunodeficiency. Elucidating the molecular basis of Ig diversification is essential for a better understanding of diseases related to Ig CSR defects and could provide clues for clinical diagnosis and therapeutic approaches. Here, we review the most recent insights on the diversification of five Ig isotypes and choose several classic diseases, including hyper-IgM syndrome, Waldenstr & ouml;m macroglobulinemia, hyper-IgD syndrome, selective IgA deficiency, hyper-IgE syndrome, multiple myeloma, and Burkitt lymphoma, to illustrate the mechanism of Ig CSR deficiency. The investigation into the underlying mechanism of Ig CSR holds significant potential for the advancement of increasingly precise diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. CSR switches IgM to other immunoglobulins. Following immune response or infection within the body, activation of T cell-dependent and T cell-independent antigens triggers the activation of AID, initiating the CSR process. CSR has the capacity to modify the functional properties of antibodies, thereby contributing to the adaptive immune response in the organism. image

    • Nanobubbles play an important role in diverse fields, including engineering, medicine, and agriculture. Understanding the characteristics of individual nanobubbles is essential for comprehending fluid dynamics behaviors and advancing nanoscale science across various fields. Here, we report a strategy based on nanopore sensors for characterizing single-digit nanobubbles. We investigated the sizes and diffusion coefficients of nanobubbles at different voltages. Additionally, the finite element simulation and molecular dynamics simulation were introduced to account for counterion concentration variation around nanobubbles in the nanopore. In particular, the differences in stability and surface charge density of nanobubbles under various solution environments have been studied by the ion-stabilized model and the DLVO theory. Additionally, a straightforward method to mitigate nanobubble generation in the bulk for reducing current noise in nanopore sensing was suggested. The results hold significant implications for enhancing the understanding of individual nanobubble characterizations, especially in the nanofluid field.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Matter. - : CELL PRESS. - 2590-2393 .- 2590-2385. ; 7:3, s. 1054-1070
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Compositional heterogeneity is commonly observed in mixed bromide/iodide perovskite photoabsorbers, typically with minimal effects on charge carrier recombination and photovoltaic performance. Consistently, it has so far received very limited attention in bromide/chloride-mixed perovskites, which hold particular significance for blue light-emitting diodes. Here, we uncover that even a minor degree of localized halide heterogeneity leads to severe non-radiative losses in mixed bromide/chloride blue perovskite emitters, presenting a stark contrast to general observations in photovoltaics. We not only provide a visualization of the heterogeneity landscape spanning from micro-to sub-microscale but also identify that this issue mainly arises from the initially formed chloride-rich clusters during perovskite nucleation. Our work sheds light on a long-term neglected factor impeding the advancement of blue light-emitting diodes using mixed halide perovskites and provides a practical strategy to mitigate this issue.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Membrane Science. - 1873-3123 .- 0376-7388. ; 705
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To optimize the Laser-Induced Graphene (LIG) Janus membrane, this study investigated the effects of membrane pore structure, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating sequence and addition of silver (Ag) nanoparticles on membrane distillation (MD) performance. This study aimed to enhance the photothermal characteristics of graphene while using the intrinsic electrical conductivity for simultaneous photo- and electrothermal MD. Operating at the same photo- and electro-thermal power input, the LIG Janus membrane made by treating the membrane face with smaller pores (i.e., shiny side) gave an improved flux performance of up to 53.6% and a decrease in specific energy of 35.4% compared to that by treating the membrane face with larger pores (i.e., dull side). The effect of the PDMS coating sequence also depended on the pore structure. For the face with smaller pore structures, coating PDMS before laser irradiation (PDMS-BLSS) gave a flux improvement of up to 24.5% and a decrease in specific energy of 19.7%, compared to coating PDMS after laser irradiation (PDMS-ALSS). As for the face with larger pore structures, coating PDMS before laser irradiation (PDMS-BLDS) resulted in a flux reduction of up to 20.8% and an increase in specific energy of 27.1%, compared to coating PDMS after irradiation (PDMS-ALDS). The LIG Janus membranes embedded with Ag nanoparticles led to improved photothermal heating properties, improving flux by 43.1–65.8% and decreasing specific energy by 15.2–30.5% while maintaining similar electrothermal heating properties. Carrying out simultaneous photo- and electro-thermal MD indicates that only the Ag-doped Janus LIG membrane gave a synergistic effect whereby the flux of the combined heating mode was higher than the summation of the fluxes obtained when operating in the individual heating modes.

    • PURPOSE: There is strong evidence that leisure-time physical activity is protective against postmenopausal breast cancer risk but the association with premenopausal breast cancer is less clear. The purpose of this study was to examine the association of physical activity with the risk of developing premenopausal breast cancer.METHODS: We pooled individual-level data on self-reported leisure-time physical activity across 19 cohort studies comprising 547,601 premenopausal women, with 10,231 incident cases of breast cancer. Multivariable Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs for associations of leisure-time physical activity with breast cancer incidence. HRs for high versus low levels of activity were based on a comparison of risk at the 90th versus 10th percentiles of activity. We assessed the linearity of the relationship and examined subtype-specific associations and effect modification across strata of breast cancer risk factors, including adiposity.RESULTS: Over a median 11.5 years of follow-up (IQR, 8.0-16.1 years), high versus low levels of leisure-time physical activity were associated with a 6% (HR, 0.94 [95% CI, 0.89 to 0.99]) and a 10% (HR, 0.90 [95% CI, 0.85 to 0.95]) reduction in breast cancer risk, before and after adjustment for BMI, respectively. Tests of nonlinearity suggested an approximately linear relationship (Pnonlinearity = .94). The inverse association was particularly strong for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-enriched breast cancer (HR, 0.57 [95% CI, 0.39 to 0.84]; Phet = .07). Associations did not vary significantly across strata of breast cancer risk factors, including subgroups of adiposity.CONCLUSION: This large, pooled analysis of cohort studies adds to evidence that engagement in higher levels of leisure-time physical activity may lead to reduced premenopausal breast cancer risk.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Innovation. - 2666-6758. ; 5
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Environmental pollution is escalating due to rapid global development that often prioritizes human needs over planetary health. Despite global efforts to mitigate legacy pollutants, the continuous introduction of new substances remains a major threat to both people and the planet. In response, global initiatives are focusing on risk assessment and regulation of emerging contaminants, as demonstrated by the ongoing efforts to establish the UN's Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution Prevention. This review identifies the sources and impacts of emerging contaminants on planetary health, emphasizing the importance of adopting a One Health approach. Strategies for monitoring and addressing these pollutants are discussed, underscoring the need for robust and socially equitable environmental policies at both regional and international levels. Urgent actions are needed to transition toward sustainable pollution management practices to safeguard our planet for future generations.

  • Anchoring Fe Species on the Highly Curved Surface of S and N Co-Doped Carbonaceous Nanosprings for Oxygen Electrocatalysis and a Flexible Zinc-Air Battery
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Angewandte Chemie International Edition. - 1433-7851 .- 1521-3773. ; 63:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is of critical significance in the advancement of fuel cells and zinc-air batteries. The iron-nitrogen (Fe−Nx) sites exhibited exceptional reactivity towards ORR. However, the task of designing and controlling the local structure of Fe species for high ORR activity and stability remains a challenge. Herein, we have achieved successful immobilization of Fe species onto the highly curved surface of S, N co-doped carbonaceous nanosprings (denoted as FeNS/Fe3C@CNS). The induction of this twisted configuration within FeNS/Fe3C@CNS arose from the assembly of chiral templates. For electrocatalytic ORR tests, FeNS/Fe3C@CNS exhibits a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.91 V in alkaline medium and a E1/2 of 0.78 V in acidic medium. The Fe single atoms and Fe3C nanoparticles are coexistent and play as active centers within FeNS/Fe3C@CNS. The highly curved surface, coupled with S substitution in the coordination layer, served to reduce the energy barrier for ORR, thereby enhancing the intrinsic catalytic activity of the Fe single-atom sites. We also assembled a wearable flexible Zn-air battery using FeNS/Fe3C@CNS as electrocatalysts. This work provides new insights into the construction of highly curved surfaces within carbon materials, offering high electrocatalytic efficacy and remarkable performance for flexible energy conversion devices.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Accurate monitoring of daily precipitation is essential for many applications, such as simulation and prediction of watershed water-related disasters. However, precipitation data from satellite and gauge-based precipitation products face challenges in capturing true observations because of their large uncertainties. To improve daily precipitation estimates, this study proposed a new merging framework, ETCCCDF, that combines an extended triple collocation (ETCC) with maximized correlation and cumulative distribution function (CDF) matching with reduced bias. The ETCCCDF framework was applied to systematically integrate three independent precipitation products from SM2RAIN-ASCAT satellite soil moisture estimator, IMERG Early Run satellite retrieval, and CPC unified gauge-based analysis. A new merged precipitation product, with a fine spatiotemporal resolution of 0.25°/1 d, was developed and then thoroughly evaluated using 2304 stations over mainland China from 2007 to 2014. The results showed that the ETCCCDF framework significantly improved the precipitation representation in terms of the correlation, bias, and absolute difference, and it increased modified Kling-Gupta efficiency value relative to any of the parent precipitation products, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed merging framework. In addition, the ETCCCDF framework is more robust than the ETCC, triple collocation (TC) merging, and combined strategy of TC with CDF, in which CDF matching successfully corrects the precipitation biases in collocation fusions. The accuracy of the merged products in heavy rainfall estimation during Typhoon Morakot in 2009 and Typhoon Fitow in 2013 was further evaluated. The results confirmed that the ETCCCDF-merged product performed satisfactorily for heavy rainfall events and presented superior statistical scores. This study proves that the ETCCCDF framework is a promising solution for obtaining high-quality precipitation data, particularly for limited-gauge areas.

  • Modification of Food Allergy on the Associations between Early Life Exposure to Size-Specific Particulate Matter and Childhood Allergic Rhinitis
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Technology. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 58:4, s. 1813-1822
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous studies have reported the association between particulate matter (PM) and childhood allergic rhinitis (AR). However, it is unclear whether food allergy (FA) modifies the PM-AR association. We aimed at evaluating the effect of the modification of FA on PM-AR association in preschool children. We adopted a cross-sectional study and conducted a questionnaire survey among preschool children aged 3-6 years in 7 cities in China from June 2019 to June 2020 to collect information on AR and FA. We used a combination of multilevel logistic regression and restricted cubic spline functions to quantitatively assess whether FA modifies the associations between size-specific PM exposure (1 x 1 km) and the risk of AR. The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for AR among the children with FA as per a 10 mu g/m(3) increase in early life PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 were significantly higher than the corresponding ORs among the children without FA [e.g., OR: 1.58, 95% CI: (1.32, 1.90) vs 1.29, 95% CI: (1.18, 1.41), per 10 mu g/m(3) increase in PM1]. The interactions between FA and size-specific PM exposure and their effects on AR were statistically significant (all p-int < 0.001). FA, as an important part of the allergic disease progression, may modify the PM-AR association in preschool children.

  • Long-term exposure to major constituents of fine particulate matter and neurodegenerative diseases : a population-based survey in the Pearl River Delta Region, China
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Hazardous Materials. - : Elsevier. - 0304-3894 .- 1873-3336. ; 470
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Exposure to PM2.5 has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases, with limited understanding of constituent-specific contributions. Objectives: To explore the associations between long-term exposure to PM2.5 constituents and neurodegenerative diseases. Methods: We recruited 148,274 individuals aged ≥ 60 from four cities in the Pearl River Delta region, China (2020 to 2021). We calculated twenty-year average air pollutant concentrations (PM2.5 mass, black carbon (BC), organic matter (OM), ammonium (NH4+), nitrate (NO3-) and sulfate (SO42-)) at the individuals' home addresses. Neurodegenerative diseases were determined by self-reported doctor-diagnosed Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). Generalized linear mixed models were employed to explore associations between pollutants and neurodegenerative disease prevalence. Results: PM2.5 and all five constituents were significantly associated with a higher prevalence of AD and PD. The observed associations generally exhibited a non-linear pattern. For example, compared with the lowest quartile, higher quartiles of BC were associated with greater odds for AD prevalence (i.e., the adjusted odds ratios were 1.81; 95% CI, 1.45–2.27; 1.78; 95% CI, 1.37–2.32; and 1.99; 95% CI, 1.54–2.57 for the second, third, and fourth quartiles, respectively). Conclusions: Long-term exposure to PM2.5 and its constituents, particularly combustion-related BC, OM, and SO42-, was significantly associated with higher prevalence of AD and PD in Chinese individuals.Environmental implication: PM2.5 is a routinely regulated mixture of multiple hazardous constituents that can lead to diverse adverse health outcomes. However, current evidence on the specific contributions of PM2.5 constituents to health effects is scarce. This study firstly investigated the association between PM2.5 constituents and neurodegenerative diseases in the moderately to highly polluted Pearl River Delta region in China, and identified hazardous constituents within PM2.5 that have significant impacts. This study provides important implications for the development of targeted PM2.5 prevention and control policies to reduce specific hazardous PM2.5 constituents.

  • Prenatal and postnatal early life exposure to greenness and particulate matter of different size fractions in relation to childhood rhinitis : A multi-center study in China
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Science of the Total Environment. - : Elsevier. - 0048-9697 .- 1879-1026. ; 938
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The impact of early life exposure to residential greenness on childhood rhinitis and its interaction with particulate matter (PM) of different size fractions remain inconsistent. Herein, we recruited 40,486 preschool children from randomly selected daycare centers in 7 cities in China from 2019 to 2020, and estimated exposure to residential greenness by the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) with a 500 m buffer. Exposure to ambient PM (PM1, PM2.5, and PM10) was evaluated using a satellite-based prediction model (daily, at a resolution of 1 km × 1 km). By mixed-effect logistic regression, NDVI values during pregnancy, in the first (0–1 year old) and the second (1–2 years old) year of life were negatively associated with lifetime rhinitis (LR) and current rhinitis (CR) (P < 0.001). PM in the same time windows was associated with increased risks of LR and CR in children, with smaller size fraction of PM showing greater associations. The negative associations between prenatal and postnatal NDVI and LR and CR in preschool children remained robust after adjusting for concomitant exposure to PM, whereas the associations of postnatal NDVI and rhinitis showed significant interactions with PM. At lower levels of PM, postnatal NDVI remained negatively associated with rhinitis and was partly mediated by PM (10.0–40.9 %), while at higher levels of PM, the negative associations disappeared or even turned positive. The cut-off levels of PM were identified for each size fraction of PM. In conclusion, prenatal exposure to greenness had robust impacts in lowering the risk of childhood rhinitis, while postnatal exposure to greenness depended on the co-exposure levels to PM. This study revealed the complex interplay of greenness and PM on rhinitis in children. The exposure time window in prenatal or postnatal period and postnatal concomitant PM levels played important roles in influencing the associations between greenness, PM and rhinitis.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: The Innovation Geoscience. - : Innovation Press. - 2959-8753. ; 2:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainable development depends on the integration of the economy, society, and environment. Yet, escalating environmental challenges pose threats to both society and the economy. Despite progress in addressing environmental issues to promote sustainability, knowledge gaps in scientific research, technological advancement, engineering practice, and policy development persist. In this review, we aim to narrow these gaps by proposing innovation-based solutions and refining existing paradigms. Reviewing past research and actions, we first elucidate the evolution of sustainability science and the essence of sustainable development and its assessment. Secondly, we summarize current major environmental issues, including global warming and climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation and desertification, and environmental pollution, as well as their relationships with sustainability and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Subsequently, this review critically evaluates the role of innovations in science, technology, engineering, and policy (iSTEP) and their synergies in advancing sustainability and SDGs. While their sequential relationships may vary based on specific contexts or sustainability scenarios within the iSTEP framework, each component reinforces the others, fostering continuous improvement. Finally, this review offers recommendations and future perspectives for formulating sustainability roadmaps. Recommendations include fostering a vision of sustainability, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and encouraging transboundary cooperation among stakeholders for future sustainability endeavors.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the implementation of the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) and the publication of the metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) nomenclature in 2020, it is important to establish consensus for the coding of MAFLD in ICD-11. This will inform subsequent revisions of ICD-11.Using the Qualtrics XM and WJX platforms, questionnaires were sent online to MAFLD-ICD-11 coding collaborators, authors of papers, and relevant association members.A total of 890 international experts in various fields from 61 countries responded to the survey. We also achieved full coverage of provincial-level administrative regions in China. 77.1% of respondents agreed that MAFLD should be represented in ICD-11 by updating NAFLD, with no significant regional differences (77.3% in Asia and 76.6% in non-Asia, p=0.819). Over 80% of respondents agreed or somewhat agreed with the need to assign specific codes for progressive stages of MAFLD (i.e. steatohepatitis) (92.2%), MAFLD combined with comorbidities (84.1%), or MAFLD subtypes (i.e., lean, overweight/obese, and diabetic) (86.1%).This global survey by a collaborative panel of clinical, coding, health management and policy experts, indicates agreement that MAFLD should be coded in ICD-11. The data serves as a foundation for corresponding adjustments in the ICD-11 revision.

  • Integrated CFD and MBD methods for dynamic performance analysis of a high-speed train transitioning through varied windbreak corridor designs
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics. - 0167-6105. ; 250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With increasing train speeds, the wind environment along routes has become complex, variable, and extreme. Constructing windbreak facilities is an effective strategy to enhance train operational safety in windy zones. Various windbreak designs exhibit notable differences in improving train dynamic performance, and economic considerations are also crucial. Utilizing the non-constant compressible Reynolds time-averaged equation URANS (Unsteady Reynold-averaged Navier–Stokes) alongside the shear-stress transport (SST) k-ω turbulence model, this study simulates the non-constant aerodynamic characteristics of a 350 km/h high-speed train traversing through different forms of windbreak corridors in a 30 m/s wind zone. The train's dynamic response was captured using a combined CFD–MBD (Computational Fluid Dynamics and Multi-Body Dynamics) offline time-domain simulation, the accuracy of which was verified experimentally. Results indicate that vortices of various positions and shapes form in the flow field along the windbreak corridor depending on the size of the openings. Using the no-windbreak corridor (Case 1) and the fully enclosed corridor (Case 4) as control groups, it was observed that smaller openings lead to more stable airflow, enhancing peak damping and fluctuation effects, albeit with varying stages of aerodynamic load fluctuation. The 1/3-opening windbreak corridor (Case 3) effectively mitigated the sudden aerodynamic load changes at the wind zone transition of the 2/3-opening windbreak corridor (Case 2), with the primary fluctuation area in Case 3 being the wind section. Dynamic analyses revealed that Case 2 exhibited insufficient lateral aerodynamic performance, raising derailment concerns. In contrast, Case 3 ensured travel safety and comfort effectively, while Case 4 offered excessive protective capacity. This study's findings serve as a valuable reference for designing windbreak corridors and ensuring the safe operation of trains in windy regions.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Robotics and Computer-Integrated Manufacturing. - : Elsevier BV. - 0736-5845 .- 1879-2537. ; 85, s. 102609-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Robotic machining is a potential method for machining large-scale components (LSCs) due to its low cost and high flexibility. However, the low stiffness of robots and complex machining process of LSCs result in a lack of alignment between the physical process and digital models, making it difficult to realize the robotic machining of LSCs. The recent Digital Twin (DT) concept shows potential in terms of representing and modeling physical processes. Therefore, this study proposes a robotic machining DT for LSCs. However, the current DT is not capable of knowledge representation, multi-source data integration, optimization algorithm implementation, and real-time control. To address these issues, Knowledge Graph (KG) and Function Block (FB) are employed in the proposed robotic machining DT. Here, robotic machining related information, such as the machining parameters and errors, is represented in the virtual space by building the KG, whereas the FBs are responsible for integrating and applying the algorithms for process execution and optimization based on real-world events. Moreover, a novel adaptive process adjustment strategy is proposed to improve the efficiency of the process execution. Finally, a prototype system of the robotic machining DT is developed and validated by an experiment on robotic milling of the assembly interface for an LSC. The results demonstrate that the robotic machining is successfully optimized and improved by the proposed method.

  • Enhancement of myofibrillar protein gelation by plant proteins for improved surimi gel characteristics: Mechanisms and performance
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Lebensmittel-Wissenschaft + Technologie. - : Elsevier BV. - 0023-6438 .- 1096-1127. ; 198
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three commonly used plant proteins, soy isolate protein (SPI), wheat gluten (WG) and pea protein (PP), were incorporated into surimi gels, and their effects on myofibrillar protein gelation and resultant surimi gel properties have been investigated. Results revealed that addition of any of these plant proteins at 5 g/100 g surimi enhanced the surimi gelation, among which SPI addition resulted in smoother, denser and whiter surimi gels (whiteness of 61.49) with superior textural attributes (hardness of 1994 g), water-holding capacity (85.67%) and structural integrity. Such improvements were attributed to the uniform distribution of SPI solution between adjacent surimi protein molecules, not only aiding in maintaining the matrix's continuity but bridging the interaction between the proteins. SPI with a higher content of charged amino acids (47.17%) exhibited a better ability to interact with the charged N- and C- terminals of surimi proteins. This interaction promoted the complete unfolding of surimi proteins, facilitated the conversion of α-helix to β structures, exposing hydrophobic ends and sulfhydryl groups, and consequently enhanced the formation of hydrophobic interactions and disulfide bonds during gelation. This study demonstrated that plant proteins, especially SPI, are effective gel-reinforcing additives in surimi gels, offering insights for developing plant protein-rich surimi products.

  • Ingår i: Express Polymer Letters. - 1788-618X. ; 18:10, s. 976-990
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are widely used as important energy storage and energy supply devices. The porous design and heteroatomization modification of carbon-based anode materials are crucial for achieving high-capacity and reversible energy storage in LIBs. Sol-gel method and pyrolysis treatment were used to obtain silica/silver composite particles used as templates. Polyphosphazene-coated silica/silver composite composite carbon materials (SiO2/Ag@PZS-C) were synthesized through in-situ self-assembly and carbonization of polyphosphazene. The electrochemical behavior and lithium storage mechanism of SiO2/Ag@PZS-C was also studied. The results reveal that the composite exhibited high specific capacity, stable cycling and superior rate performance. The double modification of silver nanoparticles and polyphosphazene carbon significantly improves the conductivity of silica and reduces the volume change. Moreover, the carbon shell of polyphosphazene facilitated the formation of a stable solid electrolyte interface film (SEI), preventing direct contact between the active material and the electrolyte, thereby substantially enhancing lithium storage performance.

  • The Effect of Conformational Freedom vs Restriction on the Rate in Asymmetric Hydrogenation : Iridium-Catalyzed Regio- and Enantioselective Monohydrogenation of Dienones
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Chemistry - A European Journal. - 0947-6539 .- 1521-3765. ; 30:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transition metal-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation constitutes an efficient strategy for the preparation of chiral molecules. When dienes are subjected to hydrogenation, control over regioselectivity still presents a large challenge and the fully saturated alkane is often yielded. A few successful monohydrogenations of dienes have been reported, but hitherto these are only efficient for dienes comprised of two distinctly different olefins. Herein, the reactivity of a conjugated carbonyl compound as a function of their conformational freedom is studied, based on a combined experimental and theoretical approach. It was found that alkenes in the (s)-cis conformation experience a large rate acceleration while (s)-trans restrained alkenes undergo hydrogenation slowly. Ultimately, this reactivity aspect was exploited in a novel method for the monohydrogenation of dienes based on conformational restriction ((s)-cis vs (s)-trans). This mode of discrimination conceptually differs from existing monohydrogenations and dienones constructed of two olefins similar in nature could efficiently be hydrogenated to the chiral alkene (up to 99 % ee). The extent of regioselection is even powerful enough to overcome the conventional reactivity order of substituted olefins (di>tri>tetra). This high yielding and atom-economical protocol provides an interesting opportunity to instal a stereogenic center on a carbocycle, while leaving a synthetically useful alkene untouched.

    • Measurements of the molecular composition of organic aerosol (OA) constituents improve our understanding of sources, formation processes, and physicochemical properties of OA. One instrument providing such data at a time resolution of minutes to hours is the chemical ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer with filter inlet for gases and aerosols (FIGAERO-CIMS). The technique collects particles on a filter, which are subsequently desorbed, and the evaporated molecules are ionized and analyzed in the mass spectrometer. However, long-term measurements using this technique and/or field deployments at several sites simultaneously require substantial human and financial resources. The analysis of filter samples collected outside the instrument (offline) may provide a more cost-efficient alternative and makes this technology available for the large number of particle filter samples collected routinely at many different sites globally. Filter-based offline use of the FIGAERO-CIMS limits this method, albeit to particle-phase analyses, which is likely at a reduced time resolution compared to online deployments. Here we present the application and assessment of offline FIGAERO-CIMS, using Teflon and quartz fiber filter samples that were collected in autumn 2018 in urban Beijing. We demonstrate the feasibility of the offline application with a “sandwich” sample preparation for the over 900 identified organic compounds with (1) high signal-to-noise ratios, (2) high repeatability, and (3) linear signal response to the filter loadings. Comparable overall signals were observed between the quartz fiber and Teflon filters for 12 and 24h samples but with larger signals for semi-volatile compounds for the quartz fiber filters, likely due to adsorption artifacts. We also compare desorption profile (thermogram) shapes for the two filter materials. Thermograms are used to derive volatility qualitatively based on the desorption temperature at which the maximum signal intensity of a compound is observed (Tmax). While we find that Tmax can be determined with high repeatability (±5.7∘C) from the duplicate tests for one filter type, we observe considerable differences in Tmax between the quartz and Teflon filters, warranting further investigation into the thermal desorption characteristics of different filter types. Overall, this study provides a basis for expanding OA molecular characterization by FIGAERO-CIMS to situations where and when deployment of the instrument itself is not possible.

  • Ingår i: Hydrological Processes. - : Wiley. - 0885-6087 .- 1099-1085. ; 37:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climate change has caused significant impacts on water resource redistribution around the world and posed a great threat in the last several decades due to intensive human activities. The impacts of human water use and management on regional water resources remain unclear as they are intertwined with the impacts of climate change. In this study, we disentangled the impact of climate-induced human activities on groundwater resources in a typical region of the semi-arid North China Plain based on a process-oriented groundwater modelling approach accounting for climate-human-groundwater interactions. We found that the climate-induced human effect is amplified in water resources management ('amplifying effect') for our study region under future climate scenarios. We specifically derived a tipping point for annual precipitation of 350 mm, below which the climate-induced human activities on groundwater withdrawal will cause significant 'amplifying effect' on groundwater depletion. Furthermore, we explored the different pumping scenarios under various climate conditions and investigated the pumping thresholds, which the pumping amount should not exceed (4 x 10(7) m(3)) in order to control future groundwater level depletion. Our results highlight that it is critical to implement adaptive water use practices, such as water-saving irrigation technologies in the semi-arid regions, in order to mitigate the negative impacts of groundwater overexploitation, particularly when annual precipitation is anomalously low.

  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0306-2619 .- 1872-9118. ; 339

    • With the wide adoption of building automation system, and the advancement of data, sensing, and machine learning techniques, data-driven fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) for building heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems has gained increasing attention. In this paper, data-driven FDD is defined as those that are built or trained from data via machine learning or multivariate statistical analysis methods. Following this definition, this paper reviews and summarizes the literature on data-driven FDD from three aspects: process, systems studied (including the systems being investigated, the faults being identified, and the associated data sources), and evaluation metrics. A data-driven FDD process is further divided into the following steps: data collection, data cleansing, data preprocessing, baseline establishment, fault detection, fault diagnostics, and potential fault prognostics. Literature reported data-driven methods used in each step of an FDD process are firstly discussed. Applications of data-driven FDD in various HVAC systems/components and commonly used data source for FDD development are reviewed secondly, followed by a summary of typical metrics for evaluating FDD methods. Finally, this literature review concludes that despite the promising performance reported in the literature, data-driven FDD methods still face many challenges, such as real-building deployment, performance evaluation and benchmarking, scalability and transferability, interpretability, cyber security and data privacy, user experience, etc. Addressing these challenges is critical for a broad real-building adoption of data-driven FDD.

  • Reducing the aerodynamic drag of high-speed trains by air blowing from the nose part: Effect of blowing speed
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics. - 0167-6105. ; 238
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To reduce the aerodynamic drag of high-speed trains, this work proposes an air blowing configuration on the head and tail cars of high-speed trains. The variation in the aerodynamic drag and slipstream velocity is analyzed under different blowing velocities, and the flow mechanism for train aerodynamic performance alteration is explained. The results show that under the blowing speeds of Ub = 0.05Ut, 0.10Ut, 0.15Ut, and 0.20Ut, where Ut is the train speed, the total drag coefficient (Cd) decreases by 5.81%, 10.78%, 13.70%, and 15.43% compared to the without-blowing case, respectively. However, with the increase in the blowing speed, the reduction trend of Cd tends to be smoother; namely, the decrement ratio compared to the previous blowing speed for the head car is 9.08%, 0.11%, 0.60%, and 1.14% for Ub = 0.05Ut, 0.10Ut, 0.15Ut, and 0.20Ut, respectively. The blowing measure generates an air gap between the coming flow and train surface, consequently causing a reduction in the viscous and pressure drag. In addition, the structure size and strength of the wake flow under different blowing cases show a decreasing trend from Ub = 0.00Ut to 0.10Ut and then an increasing trend from Ub = 0.10Ut to 0.20Ut. Thus, considering the blowing cost, efficiency, and flow structure evolution comprehensively, the case of Ub = 0.10Ut is recommended. Under this blowing speed, the reduction ratio of the aerodynamic drag is 9.18%, 12.77%, 10.90%, and 10.78% for the head, middle, tail car, and total train, respectively.

  • Mapping inundation extents in Poyang Lake area using Sentinel-1 data and transformer-based change detection method
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Hydrology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-1694. ; 620
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Accurate and timely mapping of inundation extents during flood periods is essential for disaster evaluation and development of rescue strategies. With unique advantages over the optical sensors (e.g., little effect of clouds, and observations at day and night), Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors provide an important data source for mapping inundation, particularly during flood periods. Freely available SAR images from Sentinel-1 have been increasingly used for many applications. This study applied an efficient transformer-based change detection method, bitemporal image transformer (BiT) with bitemporal Sentniel-1 images, to map inundation extents and evolution in Poyang Lake area in 2020. The transformer-based change detection method firstly adopted ResNet for high-level semantic features extraction, and applied a transformer mechanism to refine these features pixel-wise, followed by employing a FCN as the prediction head for generating the results of change detection. Besides, we constructed a water change detection dataset with spatial-and-temporal generalization from bitemporal Sentinel-1 images; this dataset consists of the seasonal variation water samples of Poyang Lake for years. We compared the results from the BiT method with other convolutional neural network (CNN) based methods (STANets and SNUNet). Mapped inundation extents were evaluated with the ground truth visually derived from high spatial resolution images. The evaluation showed the BiT method generated high accurate mapped inundation extents with the F1-score of 95.5%. The BiT model has proven its superior performance in detecting increased water. Based on the results of the BiT method, the variation of inundation extents in Poyang Lake during May-November 2020 was further analyzed. It was found that the water surface coverage of Poyang Lake is the smallest in late May; it gradually increased to the maximum on 14th July, and then began to stabilize and show a significant downward trend before November. The flood distribution map shows that cultivated land has been inundated with the largest area of approximately 600 km2.

  • Real-time Eco-Driving Control with Mode Switching Decisions for Electric Trucks with Dual Electric Machine Coupling Propulsion
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology. - 0018-9545 .- 1939-9359. ; 72:12, s. 15477-15490
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes a locally convergent, computationally efficient model predictive controller with mode switching decisions for the eco-driving problem of electric trucks. The problem is formulated as a bi-level program where the high-level optimises the speed trajectory and operation mode implicitly, while the low-level computes an explicit policy for power distribution of two electric machines. The alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is employed at the high-level to obtain a locally optimal solution considering both speed optimisation and integer switching decisions. Simulation results indicate that the ADMM operates the powertrain with 0.9% higher total cost and 0.86% higher energy consumption than the global optimum obtained by dynamic programming for a quantised version of the same problem. Compared to a benchmark solution that maintains a constant velocity, the ADMM, running in a model predictive control framework (ADMM_MPC), operates the powertrain with a 8.77% lower total cost and 10.3% lower energy consumption, respectively. The average time for each ADMM_MPC update is 4.6ms on a standard PC, indicating its suitability for real-time control. Simulation results also show that the prediction errors of speed limits and road slope in ADMM_MPC cause only 0.12%-0.56% performance degradation.

  • Deciphering colorectal cancer genetics through multi-omic analysis of 100,204 cases and 154,587 controls of European and east Asian ancestries
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 55, s. 89-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of mortality worldwide. We conducted a genome-wide association study meta-analysis of 100,204 CRC cases and 154,587 controls of European and east Asian ancestry, identifying 205 independent risk associations, of which 50 were unreported. We performed integrative genomic, transcriptomic and methylomic analyses across large bowel mucosa and other tissues. Transcriptome- and methylome-wide association studies revealed an additional 53 risk associations. We identified 155 high-confidence effector genes functionally linked to CRC risk, many of which had no previously established role in CRC. These have multiple different functions and specifically indicate that variation in normal colorectal homeostasis, proliferation, cell adhesion, migration, immunity and microbial interactions determines CRC risk. Crosstissue analyses indicated that over a third of effector genes most probably act outside the colonic mucosa. Our findings provide insights into colorectal oncogenesis and highlight potential targets across tissues for new CRC treatment and chemoprevention strategies.

  • Controlled synthesis of highly stable lead-free bismuth halide perovskite nanocrystals : tructures and photophysics

  • Ingår i: SCIENCE CHINA Materials. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2095-8226 .- 2199-4501. ; 66:5, s. 2079-2089
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently, cesium bismuth halide perovskites have emerged as potential substitutes to their counterparts, cesium lead halide perovskites, owing to their low toxicity. However, the photophysics of cesium-bismuth halides nanocrystals (NCs) have not yet been fully rationalized because their structures remain highly debated. The ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption along with other photophysical properties such as the nature and lifetime of the excited states vary considerably across the previous reports. Here, we successfully synthesize pure Cs3BiBr6 and Cs3Bi2Br9 NCs via a modified hot-injection method, where the structure can be easily controlled by tuning the reaction temperature. The UV-vis absorption spectrum of the pure Cs3Bi2Br9 NCs features two characteristic peaks originating from the absorption of the first exciton and second exciton, respectively, which ultimately clarifies the debate in the previous reports. Using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, we systematically investigate the excited state dynamics of the Cs3Bi2Br9 NCs and reveal that the photoexcited carriers undergo a self-trapping process within 3 ps after excitation. More intriguingly, the Cs3Bi2Br9 NCs prepared by this method show much better photostability than those prepared by the ligand-assisted reprecipitation process. Photodetectors based on these Cs3Bi2Br9 NCs show a sensitive light response, demonstrating the definite potential for breakthrough optoelectronic applications. [Figure not available: see fulltext.].

  • Nighttime NO emissions strongly suppress chlorine and nitrate radical formation during the winter in Delhi
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Chemistry And Physics. - 1680-7316 .- 1680-7324. ; 23:16, s. 9023-9036
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Atmospheric pollution in urban regions is highly influenced by oxidants due to their important role in the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and smog. These include the nitrate radical (NO3), which is typically considered a nighttime oxidant, and the chlorine radical (Cl), an extremely potent oxidant that can be released in the morning in chloride-rich environments as a result of nocturnal build-up of nitryl chloride (ClNO2). Chloride makes up a higher percentage of particulate matter in Delhi than has been observed anywhere else in the world, which results in Cl having an unusually strong influence in this city. Here, we present observations and model results revealing that atmospheric chemistry in Delhi exhibits an unusual diel cycle that is controlled by high concentrations of NO during the night. As a result of this, the formation of both NO3 and dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5), a precursor of ClNO2 and thus Cl, are suppressed at night and increase to unusually high levels during the day. Our results indicate that a substantial reduction in nighttime NO has the potential to increase both nocturnal oxidation via NO(3 )and the production of Cl during the day.

  • The association between genetically elevated polyunsaturated fatty acids and risk of cancer.
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: EBioMedicine. - : Elsevier. - 2352-3964. ; 91
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The causal relevance of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) for risk of site-specific cancers remains uncertain.METHODS: Using a Mendelian randomization (MR) framework, we assessed the causal relevance of PUFAs for risk of cancer in European and East Asian ancestry individuals. We defined the primary exposure as PUFA desaturase activity, proxied by rs174546 at the FADS locus. Secondary exposures were defined as omega 3 and omega 6 PUFAs that could be proxied by genetic polymorphisms outside the FADS region. Our study used summary genetic data on 10 PUFAs and 67 cancers, corresponding to 562,871 cases and 1,619,465 controls, collected by the Fatty Acids in Cancer Mendelian Randomization Collaboration. We estimated odds ratios (ORs) for cancer per standard deviation increase in genetically proxied PUFA exposures.FINDINGS: Genetically elevated PUFA desaturase activity was associated (P < 0.0007) with higher risk (OR [95% confidence interval]) of colorectal cancer (1.09 [1.07-1.11]), esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (1.16 [1.06-1.26]), lung cancer (1.06 [1.03-1.08]) and basal cell carcinoma (1.05 [1.02-1.07]). There was little evidence for associations with reproductive cancers (OR = 1.00 [95% CI: 0.99-1.01]; Pheterogeneity = 0.25), urinary system cancers (1.03 [0.99-1.06], Pheterogeneity = 0.51), nervous system cancers (0.99 [0.95-1.03], Pheterogeneity = 0.92) or blood cancers (1.01 [0.98-1.04], Pheterogeneity = 0.09). Findings for colorectal cancer and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma remained compatible with causality in sensitivity analyses for violations of assumptions. Secondary MR analyses highlighted higher omega 6 PUFAs (arachidonic acid, gamma-linolenic acid and dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid) as potential mediators. PUFA biosynthesis is known to interact with aspirin, which increases risk of bleeding and inflammatory bowel disease. In a phenome-wide MR study of non-neoplastic diseases, we found that genetic lowering of PUFA desaturase activity, mimicking a hypothetical intervention to reduce cancer risk, was associated (P < 0.0006) with increased risk of inflammatory bowel disease but not bleeding.INTERPRETATION: The PUFA biosynthesis pathway may be an intervention target for prevention of colorectal cancer and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma but with potential for increased risk of inflammatory bowel disease.

  • Reconstructing long-term global satellite-based soil moisture data using deep learning method
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Earth Science. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 2296-6463. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soil moisture is an essential component for the planetary balance between land surface water and energy. Obtaining long-term global soil moisture data is important for understanding the water cycle changes in the warming climate. To date several satellite soil moisture products are being developed with varying retrieval algorithms, however with considerable missing values. To resolve the data gaps, here we have constructed two global satellite soil moisture products, i.e., the CCI (Climate Change Initiative soil moisture, 1989–2021; CCIori hereafter) and the CM (Correlation Merging soil moisture, 2006–2019; CMori hereafter) products separately using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with autoencoding approach, which considers soil moisture variability in both time and space. The reconstructed datasets, namely CCIrec and CMrec, are cross-evaluated with artificial missing values, and further againt in-situ observations from 12 networks including 485 stations globally, with multiple error metrics of correlation coefficients (R), bias, root mean square errors (RMSE) and unbiased root mean square error (ubRMSE) respectively. The cross-validation results show that the reconstructed missing values have high R (0.987 and 0.974, respectively) and low RMSE (0.015 and 0.032 m3/m3, respectively) with the original ones. The in-situ validation shows that the global mean R between CCIrec (CCIori) and in-situ observations is 0.590 (0.581), RMSE is 0.093 (0.093) m3/m3, ubRMSE is 0.059 (0.058) m3/m3, bias is 0.032 (0.037) m3/m3 respectively; CMrec (CMori) shows quite similar results. The added value of this study is to provide long-term gap-free satellite soil moisture products globally, which helps studies in the fields of hydrology, meteorology, ecology and climate sciences.

  • Genetic Susceptibility to Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Risk for Pancreatic Cancer: Mendelian Randomization
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention. - : American Association For Cancer Research (AACR). - 1055-9965 .- 1538-7755. ; 32:9, s. 1265-1269
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: There are conflicting data on whether nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with susceptibility to pancreatic cancer. Using Mendelian randomization (MR), we investigated the relationship between genetic predisposition to NAFLD and risk for pancreatic cancer.METHODS: Data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) within the Pancreatic Cancer Cohort Consortium (PanScan; cases n = 5,090, controls n = 8,733) and the Pancreatic Cancer Case Control Consortium (PanC4; cases n = 4,163, controls n = 3,792) were analyzed. We used data on 68 genetic variants with four different MR methods [inverse variance weighting (IVW), MR-Egger, simple median, and penalized weighted median] separately to predict genetic heritability of NAFLD. We then assessed the relationship between each of the four MR methods and pancreatic cancer risk, using logistic regression to calculate ORs and 95% confidence intervals (CI), adjusting for PC risk factors, including obesity and diabetes.RESULTS: No association was found between genetically predicted NAFLD and pancreatic cancer risk in the PanScan or PanC4 samples [e.g., PanScan, IVW OR, 1.04; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.88-1.22; MR-Egger OR, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.65-1.21; PanC4, IVW OR, 1.07; 95% CI, 0.90-1.27; MR-Egger OR, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.67-1.28]. None of the four MR methods indicated an association between genetically predicted NAFLD and pancreatic cancer risk in either sample.CONCLUSIONS: Genetic predisposition to NAFLD is not associated with pancreatic cancer risk.IMPACT: Given the close relationship between NAFLD and metabolic conditions, it is plausible that any association between NAFLD and pancreatic cancer might reflect host metabolic perturbations (e.g., obesity, diabetes, or metabolic syndrome) and does not necessarily reflect a causal relationship between NAFLD and pancreatic cancer.

  • The first visual object tracking segmentation VOTS2023 challenge results
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 2023 IEEE/CVF International conference on computer vision workshops (ICCVW). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9798350307443 - 9798350307450 ; , s. 1788-1810
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Visual Object Tracking Segmentation VOTS2023 challenge is the eleventh annual tracker benchmarking activity of the VOT initiative. This challenge is the first to merge short-term and long-term as well as single-target and multiple-target tracking with segmentation masks as the only target location specification. A new dataset was created; the ground truth has been withheld to prevent overfitting. New performance measures and evaluation protocols have been created along with a new toolkit and an evaluation server. Results of the presented 47 trackers indicate that modern tracking frameworks are well-suited to deal with convergence of short-term and long-term tracking and that multiple and single target tracking can be considered a single problem. A leaderboard, with participating trackers details, the source code, the datasets, and the evaluation kit are publicly available at the challenge website1

  • Efficient heat dissipation perovskite lasers using a high-thermal-conductivity diamond substrate
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: SCIENCE CHINA Materials. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2095-8226 .- 2199-4501. ; 66:6, s. 2400-2407
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Efficient heat dissipation that can minimize temperature increases in device is critical in realizing electrical injection lasers. High-thermal-conductivity diamonds are promising for overcoming heat dissipation limitations for perovskite lasers. In this study, we demonstrate a perovskite nanoplatelet laser on a diamond substrate that can efficiently dissipate heat generated during optical pumping. Tight optical confinement is also realized by introducing a thin SiO2 gap layer between nanoplatelets and the diamond substrate. The demonstrated laser features a Q factor of ∼1962, a lasing threshold of 52.19 µJ cm−2, and a low pump-density-dependent temperature sensitivity (∼0.56 ± 0.01 K cm2 µJ−1) through the incorporation of the diamond substrate. We believe our study could inspire the development of electrically driven perovskite lasers. [Figure not available: see fulltext.].
