  • Planning and evaluation in aid organizations
  • 1985
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The success (or failure) of aid programmes in developing countries is difficult to measure in terms of results. In fact international cooperation in development programmes seems to have reached few of its objectives. World recessions and wildly fluctuating commodity prices have hit many developing countries hard, while an ecological doomsday looms in the background. What went wrong with development cooperation through aid? What can be done better? What should the objectives of development programmes be? These questions imply that we need to study not only the impact of development projects but also initiation, implementation and evaluation processes for aid programmes. Aid organizations need to emphasize the efficiency of these processes if development programmes are to succed. This dissertation deals with structures and processes in aid organizations. It shows how planning and evaluation work in practice in a comparative study of two organizations, the United Nations Development Programme (UNPD) and the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA). Several examples of industrial development projects in Tanzania are used some successful, some failures, with others somewhere in between. The aim is to learn from this experience whether successful or not and to delineate the potential for more effective development cooperation.

  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • For centuries livestock have formed the backbone of the Somali economy. Camels are especially highly valued by Somali herdsmen. The practical uses of the camel have been eloquently described by Somalis in their extensive oral poetry, handed down through generations from father to son. It forms a complete literacy tradition composed of poems, proverbs, metaphors and tales of wisdom. The collection and preservation of Somali oral literature are important subjects that require urgent attention. This rich literature was transmitted to us orally from generation to generation. The cultural and historical life of the Somali people is reflected in this ancient oral data. The present collection of oral literature on the Somali camel is the result of an extensive research work. Oral literature has been one of the subjects studied by the "Somali camel research project", a bilateral undertaking between Somalia and Sweden (the Somali Academy of Sciences and Arts, SOMAC, and the Swedish Agency for Research Cooperation with Developing Countries, SAREC).

  • Industry goes farming : the Nigerian raw material crisis and the case of textiles and cotton
  • 1987
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This is a study of the textile industry, how it was hit by crisis, and its involvement in the production and marketing of cotton, its main raw material. When "Industry Goes Farming" it signals a new phase in third world industrialisation, with far-reaching consequences for agriculture. Can peasants solve the problems of industry or must agriculture itself be industrialised? The study examines both the industrial end of the raw material crisis and industry's strategies for subordinating or replacing the peasantry.

  • Flight and integration : causes of mass exodus from Ethiopia and problems of integration in the Sudan
  • 1988
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Today, about half of the refugees in the world are Africans. More than half of Africa's refugees originate from Ethiopia and live in the Sudan and Somalia. as a source of refugees, Ethiopia is surpassed only by Afghanistan. This book is about this mass exodus from Ethiopia. The author maintains that in the absence of a clear understanding of its root causes it is impossible to find lasting solutions to this problem of mass displacement. Therefore, he employs an historical approach and commences the study with an investigation of the links between the past history of the peoples of the Horn of Africa and the conflict which currently plague the region.
