  • How female entrepreneurs learn and acquire (business relevant) knowledge
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 10:1, s. 65-82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is still a gender gap in entrepreneurship, with only 30% of all business founders being women. One important question in this regard concerns how female entrepreneurs learn and acquire business-relevant knowledge. Individual learning processes are affected by individual sense making and cognitions, implying that amongst the other factors at the individual and environmental levels, gender is a factor influencing entrepreneurial learning. However, a gender perspective has been neglected in recent research on entrepreneurial learning and opportunity recognition. The paper concentrates on conceptually and empirically introducing this gender perspective. We explore the main influences on the entrepreneurial learning of female entrepreneurs and the determinants and triggers that impact female learning. Regarding the implications for entrepreneurship research, we hope to contribute to the understanding of what constitutes the specificities of female entrepreneurship in the frame of entrepreneurial learning and opportunity recognition.

  • Government and Entrepreneurship in Transition Economies : the Case of Small Firms in Business Services in Ukraine
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Service Industries Journal. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0264-2069 .- 1743-9507. ; 30:5, s. 655-670
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Governments play a particularly important role for entrepreneurship development in a transition context, particularly with respect to their role in creating the institutional framework that enables and/or constrains entrepreneurship. This article explores how institutional change in Ukraine, resulting in institutional deficiencies, triggered new opportunities for small firms in the emerging business services sector. Drawing on data from a survey and in-depth case studies, the article illustrates the distinctive, albeit transient, nature of opportunities for business services firms in a turbulent environment, where government has yet to fully implement an effective institutional framework for productive entrepreneurship.

  • Contextualising entrepreneurship - Conceptual Challenges and Ways Forward
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship. - : Sage Publications. - 1042-2587 .- 1540-6520. ; 35:1, s. 165-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper sets out to explore contexts for entrepreneurship, illustrating how a contextualized view of entrepreneurship contributes to our understanding of the phenomenon. There is growing recognition in entrepreneurship research that economic behavior can be better understood within its historical, temporal, institutional, spatial, and social contexts, as these contexts provide individuals with opportunities and set boundaries for their actions. Context can be an asset and a liability for the nature and extent of entrepreneurship, but entrepreneurship can also impact contexts. The paper argues that context is important for understanding when, how, and why entrepreneurship happens and who becomes involved. Exploring the multiplicity of contexts and their impact on entrepreneurship, it identifies challenges researchers face in contextualizing entrepreneurship theory and offers possible ways forward.

  • Challenges for Spatially Oriented Entrepreneurship Research
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship and Regional Development. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0898-5626 .- 1464-5114. ; 23:7-8, s. 575-602
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the past two decades, interdisciplinary oriented entrepreneurship research focused increasingly on spatial aspects of entrepreneurial activities and support policies. This paper takes stock of central themes in entrepreneurship research at and across different geographic scales, the preferred sources of data and information as well as methodological approaches. It sets out to discuss the shifting interest of research over time and to sketch out theoretical and methodological challenges for further research. This paper is based on a review of 18 international journals in small business and entrepreneurship research, economic geography, regional economics and neighbouring sciences for the period 1990–2007. Altogether, 348 relevant articles were identified, read and classified. The analysis reveals that the entrepreneur's socio-spatial contexts in which they operate on a daily basis are still absent from much of the entrepreneurship debate. We suggest intensifying research efforts on the linkage between entrepreneurial activities and localities in order to reach a better understanding of the everydayness of entrepreneurship.

  • Institutional perspectives on entrepreneurial behavior in challenging environments
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of small business management (Print). - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0047-2778 .- 1540-627X. ; 49:1, s. 107-125
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the institutional embeddedness of entrepreneurial behavior. The institutional context influences the nature, pace of development, and extent of entrepreneurship as well as the way entrepreneurs behave. This is particularly apparent in challenging environments such as emerging market and transition economies with an uncertain, ambiguous, and turbulent institutional framework. The paper develops suggestions as to how to extend the current institutional approach by emphasizing that institutions not only influence entrepreneurs but entrepreneurs may also influence institutional development by contributing to institutional change. This also includes acknowledging the heterogeneity of entrepreneurial responses to institutional conditions, depending on the situational configuration of institutional fit, enterprise characteristics, and entrepreneur's background, in which the role of trust as an influence on entrepreneurial behavior needs to be investigated. By focusing on these interrelationships, the paper aims to make a theoretical contribution to the field of entrepreneurship, illustrating how entrepreneurial behavior is linked to its social context.

  • Unternehmertum und wirtschaftliche Entwicklung
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Zeitschrift für KMU und Entrepreneurship. - : Duncker & Humblot GmbH. - 1860-4633 .- 1865-5114. ; 59:3, s. 169-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the assumption that we can classify entrepreneurial activities based on their contribution to economic development and growth. That includes the distinction between productive and unproductive entrepreneurship, “push” and “pull” entrepreneurship and opportunity versus necessity-based entrepreneurship. In general, opportunity-based activities as well as productive entrepreneurship are understood to contribute to employment growth and innovation, whilst necessity-based and unproductive entrepreneurial activities would not contribute (positively). This article challenges such dichotomies, proposing to contextualise them and paying more attention to time and situations as important influences on which type of entrepreneurship can contribute to development and growth.

  • "Surfing the Ironing Board" - The representation of women’s entrepreneurship in German newspapers
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship and Regional Development. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0898-5626 .- 1464-5114. ; 23:9-10, s. 763-786
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite extensive attempts to enhance women's entrepreneurship in Germany, a gender gap continues to exist. This article sets out to analyse the representation of women's entrepreneurship in German media, by analysing how it is depicted in newspapers and how this changes over time. Images transported in media might regulate the nature of women's entrepreneurship, as they contain information about ‘typical’ and ‘socially desirable’ behaviour of women as well as of entrepreneurs. This article contributes to developing an understanding of the relevance of media representation of the entrepreneurship phenomenon for influencing the propensity towards entrepreneurial activity.
