- The Art of Needle Exchange: The Significance of Needle Exchange Programs at the Intersection of Politics, Professional Practice, and People's Everyday LivesThis doctoral thesis discusses how social meanings are constructed in needle exchange programs. For nearly four decades, Sweden has implemented needle exchange programs to prevent the spread of bloodborne viral infections. However, a restrictive drug policy and resistance to harm reduction efforts have led to limitations in access to these programs, both in terms of geography and through an exclusionary regulatory framework. The effectiveness of needle exchange programs in reducing the risk of infection associated with injection-related behaviour is clearly positive. However, there are limited scientific studies on the more socially oriented meanings of needle exchange programs. With needle exchange programs as a physical and social place, the overarching aim of this thesis is to understand how the creation of social meanings of needle exchanges is achieved through time, space, and social interaction, primarily between the program's visitors and its staff. The empirical material primarily consists of 16 months of ethnographic fieldwork, including participant observations and informal conversations at two needle exchange programs in southern Sweden, as well as in the everyday lives of individuals who visit these programs. Through extensive ethnographic narratives and analyses based on theories of everyday life, resistance, time, and gifts, the thesis demonstrates that needle exchange programs hold multiple meanings created through interactions between visitors and staff. Two concurrent and parallel tracks contribute to understanding what needle exchange programs mean to those who visit them. One track starts with a counterproductive regulatory framework where requirements and rules result in some visitors coming less often than they need to or not at all. The other track involves countless material and relational exchanges that foster positive experiences of the needle exchange program, turning it into a place of social hope and a changed future. One of the thesis's most significant findings concerns the social work that takes place at the needle exchange program in the interactions between visitors and staff. These interactions also occur at the intersection of the norms and hierarchies of the drug world and the Swedish dream of a drug- free society. In the waiting room of the needle exchange program, negotiations are constantly underway to maintain it as a place of hopeful encounters, as opposed to a destructive refuge.

- In this letter, we propose a new technique to tune the bandgap in gap-waveguide technology based on broken glide-symmetric holey structures. We demonstrate that breaking the glide-symmetry in a proper manner provokes the presence of a passband within the bandgap due to the frequency sweep of the second propagating mode. This passband generates field leakage in the gap that is translated into a filtering property. This filtering effect may be used to reduce or eliminate filters in large complex devices. In order to avoid undesired coupling due to the leakage from the air gap between the plates, an absorbing sheet is proposed to dissipate the undesired fields. This idea has been numerically studied and experimentally validated with a specific design, a WR15-size gap-waveguide prototype with glide-symmetric holes with filtering properties.

Intressanta mötesplatser mellan samer och allmänhet : Slutrapport från projektet Ökad kunskap genom turism II

- Är Jokkmokk och Åre bra platser för lärande möten mellan samer och allmänhet? Ja, i många avseenden kan detta konstateras. Inte minst tack vare de stora evenemang som hålls på respektive ort. Under dessa evenemang kommer många besökare och ickesamer till området och är där tillgängliga för direkt informationsöverföring rörande samer och samisk kultur. Utan de mötesplatser som de båda destinationerna tillhandahåller skulle de fl esta av dessa besökare ha hänvisats till sekundär information via media och marknadsföring. Den forskning som gjorts i anslutning till informationsprojektet och som har redovisats i denna rapport visar att bilden i medier och marknadsföring ofta är tillrättalagd och mer exotisk än verkligheten. Detta i sin tur riskerar att leda till en direkt felaktig syn på samer och samisk kultur. Utveckling av samisk turism handlar mycket om gränsdragning. Denna gränsdragning bör samerna styra, men förankring bland, och erfarenhetsutbyte med, alla lokala aktörer är viktigt. De seminarier som hållits i Jokkmokk respektive Åre hade båda en stor och bred uppslutning av såväl samer som icke-samer. Det sades under seminarie-diskussionerna, och det tål att upprepas här: att denna breda förankring är en förutsättning för att lyckas med en bred informationssatsning. Turistiska evenemang erbjuder stor potential för lärande möten mellan samer och allmänhet, men det fi nns några saker man särskilt bör beakta. För det första är det viktigt med en god förkunskap och tillfällen till att lyfta de centrala frågeställningar som informationsöverföringen bör innehålla. Vad vill besökarna veta? Hur sprider man informationen på ett konkret men enkelt sätt? Vem ansvarar för vad? Dessa typer av frågeställningar kan förslagsvis lyftas under gemensamma seminarier av den typ som ordnats inom projektet och bör ingå som en naturlig del i planeringsarbetet inför alla större evenemang i Sameland. De seminarier som hållits inom ramen för projektet har båda initierat delvis nya kontakter och i båda fallen har bidrag lämnats för ett fortsatt långsiktigt samarbete. Ett exempel på detta är den inbjudan till fortsatt diskussion som lämnades av Åre kommun i samband med seminariet i Åre. För det andra är det viktigt att klara ut vem som står som ambassadör i mötet med besökarna. Erfarenheterna från intervjuer och seminarier inom projektet pekar på vikten av att det är samerna själva som äger och kontrollerar frågan om informations-spridningen. En bred lokal förankring är dock en förutsättning för att nå ut. För det tredje tycks de fl esta vara eniga om att Jokkmokk och Åre är bra platser för lärande möten ur fl er aspekter. På dessa orter fi nns året runt, och särskilt under pågående evenemang, fl era bra och naturliga mötesplatser som alla bygger mer eller mindre på den samiska turismen. Nämnas kan turistbyrå, museum och förstås de olika samiska turistentreprenörerna. Dessa miljöer är sådana som besökarna naturligt söker sig till för att få information. Med goda förberedelser kan denna potential tas tillvara. Vilken information som ska bygga konkreta informationsvägar mellan samer och allmänhet måste nog få variera från fall till fall. Helt klart är dock att det behövs material för medvetandegörande kring frågorna. Vår förhoppning är att enskilda samtal, seminarier och avrapportering av detta projekt kan bidra till näring i det fortsatta arbetet.

Minimizing speech contribution using different microphone noise dosimeter positions

- Use of noise dosimeter recordings in low sound level environments is often problematic due to the voice contribution from the carrier. The aim of the study was to find a microphone position with low speech contribution while still providing an accurate sound level recording. An experiment with different microphone positions was conducted in a low sound reverberation room. Two types of noise dosimeters were used (Brüel & Kjaer 4445 and Larson Davis Spark 706-Atex). In repeated measurements the carrier was instructed to read a text chapter during 60 seconds and at a speech of level about 60 dB(A), acquired by practice, with different background noise and noise levels. White noise and preschool noise was used at sound levels 50, 60, 70 and 80 dB(A). The voice contribution to the background noise level was then measured. Three microphone positions were tested; on the shoulder, above the ear and on the back of the head. The position with the microphone placed behind the head of the carrier had the lowest speech contribution, less than 2 dB(A) to the background noise at 70 dB(A). This compared to positions right above the ear 6 dB(A and on the shoulder 12 dB(A).

- In the last half century higher education has had to respond to a rapidly accentuated process of globalisation. Consequently, universities worldwide are more concerned with internationalisation than before. Stier identifies three intrinsic internationalisation ideologies (idealism,instrumentalism and educationalism) in higher education. Drawing from these ideologies and using discourse analysis, written documentation on internationalisation from 31 universities in 12 countries has been analysed to explore the self-presentations that universities project of themselves in discursive space. Focal questions were: (1) what types of rhetorical devices are used in university's self-presentations and (2) what are the ideological consequences of this use? Five idealtypical selfpresentations were discussed. One conclusion drawn is that universities must harmonize politically controversial dichotomies, which produces consensus narratives. Yet there are potential tensions between these dichotomies. On the language level these tensions are resolved by harmonising different ideals.

- Ovarian masses are common and a good pre-surgical assessment of their nature is important for adequate treatment. Bayesian Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLPs) using the evidence procedure were used to predict whether tumors are malignant or not. Automatic Relevance Determination (ARD) is used to select the most relevant of the 40+ available variables. Cross-validation is used to select an optimal combination of input set and number of hidden neurons. The data set consists of 1066 tumors collected at nine centers across Europe. Results indicate good performance of the models with AUC values of 0.93-0.94 on independent data. A comparison with a Bayesian perceptron model shows that the present problem is to a large extent linearly separable. The analyses further show that the number of hidden neurons specified in the ARD analyses for input selection may influence model performance.

Dad as a coach : Fatherhood and voluntary work in youth sports

- One central issue in sports is the role of informal learning in organized child and youth sport in contrast to learning in the school context of physical education (PE). In Scandinavia, the model for organizing sports include an independent sports organization that organizes child and youth training on many levels, including the grassroots level and elite competitions organized within non-profit clubs and based on non-salaried voluntary work. In contrast to the public schooling context where physical education is led by educated and professional PE-teachers, organized child and youth club sports are based on parental engagement. Drawing on ten interviews with male coaches training their own children, this study examines how fathers are handling learning in the dual position as a father and a coach. This narrative analysis focuses on the theoretical concept of dilemmatic spaces in interviews and shows how shared cultural and societal storylines are used by the parental coaches in their personal stories. The results illustrate three dilemmatic spaces of learning that the participants must rhetorically handle. The first dilemma illuminates the dual position of both being a father, and at the same time acting as a coach. In the second dilemma, the fathers are seeking to balance between care of their child and increasing performance development. The third dilemma is balancing the training as child/parent quality time and the need for children to develop autonomy. The results show how the dual position of being a father and a coach can be both an asset in the relational building but also highly problematic and, in any case, involves a relational identity change. Learning in this dual position means that the fathers cannot act entirely as a coaches and disregard or override their parental position.

Psychologizing childhood in the reality show Biggest Loser : Temporal ordering and narrating a fat identity

- Obesity and overweight are central issues in contemporary western societies, and the public debates in media are extensive. This paper investigates stories from participants in the reality TV-show Biggest Loser, and how the participants invoke temporal identity changes and childhood traumas to produce discursively accepted narratives about the causes for being obese. This study analyses personal stories about being overweight, and narratives of living a life of obesity. The findings illustrate narrative trajectories in personal stories used to explain overweight within a contemporary therapeutic discourse, and how the participants use chronology and childhood as narrative resources to explain their obesity. These narratives do not only produce preferred explanatory narrative elements, but also highlight that a number of psychologized explanatory storylines must be used in order to produce a culturally valid and discursively accepted personal obesity-narrative.
