  • Is 'the Posthuman' Educable? On the convergence of educational philosophy, animal studies, and posthumanist theory
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Discourse. Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education. - : Routledge. - 0159-6306 .- 1469-3739. ; 31:2, s. 237-250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Formal education in Western society is firmly rooted in humanist ideals. ‘Becoming human’ by cultivating certain cognitive, social, and moral abilities has even symbolised the idea of education as such in Enlightenment philosophical traditions. These ideas are increasingly coming under scrutiny by posthumanist theorists, who are addressing fundamental ontological and epistemological questions about defining an essential ‘human nature’, as well as the elastic boundary work between the human and non-human subject. This paper responds to the ongoing discussions on the diverse articulations of posthumanism in education theory and animal studies by investigating possibilities of a shared conceptual framework that allows for a productive dialogue between them. By analysing some of the meanings attached to the notion of posthumanism in education theory and animal studies, the paper begins to identify some instabilities of humanist traditions/ideals of education and explores posthumanist challenges to research on the institutionalised production, mediation, and development of knowledge.

  • Let education theory go feral : four futures for education's non/human others
  • 2012
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Futures Studies, there is never only one single future to be addressed and explored, but several. These different futures can, to varying degrees and to various stakeholders, be possible, probable, and/or desirable. The present paper draws on these foundational ideas from the field of Futures Studies by sketching four possible futures, or development orientations, for education theory. These futures are all “posthuman” insofar as they aid education in rethinking itself by embracing elements it may otherwise ignore, negate or abject. Two overarching questions are approached: What purposes of education may these theoretical futures enable or disable, and what is the role of the critic in them?

  • Parasitic pedagogies and materialities of affect in veterinary education
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Emotion, Space and Society. - : Elsevier BV. - 1755-4586 .- 1878-0040. ; 14, s. 50-56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present article contributes a critical post-humanist analysis of emotion, education, and human animal relations, including a reinterpretation of previous research on shared suffering (Haraway, 2008; Porcher, 2011) in human animal instrumental encounters. Considering how formal education, particularly a professional education program such as veterinary medical education that relies heavily on scientific facts about animals and biotechnology, recruits bodily and sensory affect to mediate techniques of animal exploitation, the article asks how we can begin to make sense of such an affective animal didactics? Drawing on ethnographic material from three events in theoretical and practice-oriented veterinary education, the article explores how bodily and sensory human/animal/technology intimacy enters education as a pedagogical device and as a subtle reinforcement of bio-economic parasitism on farmed animals' productive and reproductive capacities. The article reworks the notion of shared suffering into forms of modulation and distribution of affect to conceptualize a particular didactics of incorporating human/nonhuman interaction in the bio-economic microphysics of education.

  • Release the moths : critical animal studies and the posthumanist impulse
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Culture, Theory and Critique. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1473-5784 .- 1473-5776. ; 52:1, s. 65-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Posthumanism and critical animal studies are grounded in different theoretical frameworks and have different orientations and agendas. The present essay works through some dimensions of posthumanist thought together with critical animal studies by exploring ‘the edges’ in certain points of contact between the fields and their material and metaphorical problems and possibilities. My main objective is to begin to develop some of the most productive dimensions of posthumanism in relation to critical animal studies in a call for a critical posthumanist approach to the messy knowledge forms and politics emerging from human/animal relationships by asking the question: Under what conditions does cross-contamination take place between the two fields, and to what effects? The essay proposes two different responses to dealing with issues exposed by the juxtaposition of posthumanism and critical animal studies, and argues that this juxtaposition also accommodates a potential to instigate unexpected processes of knowledge development in both fields.

  • Terror from the stare : visual landscapes of meat production
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Antennae: The Journal of Nature in Visual Culture. - 1756-9575. ; :14, s. 34-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In his latest book, Terror from the Air, the philosopher Peter Sloterdijk investigates how air, as a fundamental life-sustaining element, has been given a pivotal role in post-war forms of terrorism, genocide, and chemical warfare. Here, I re-phrase Sloterdijk's book title to address not acts of breathing, but acts of viewing. My purpose is to discuss how different modalities and manipulations of visual perception (both human and animal) are implicated in routines of physical violence toward animals - more specifically, in the process of their becoming-meat.
