  • Visualization of ergonomic guidelines - A comparison of two computer aided systems to support vehicle design
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-8141. ; 36:6, s. 571-580
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Guidelines are used in information and quality management systems to ensure high quality by supporting design, production and communication processes. These guidelines can be presented as a conventional system on an intranet suitable for printouts, visualized as a traditional text-based report with a list of headings accompanied by tables and pictures or presented as paper documents in manuals or binders. Such approaches do not always correspond to some companys' requirements for usability. However, multimedia techniques can be used to visualize and let users interact with the information through hyperlinked text, pictures, and animations. The aim of this study was to design a computer aided system of ergonomic guidelines visualized by means of interactive multimedia technology based on cognitive theories and practical examples. Furthermore, the efficiency in and attitudes towards using the interactive multimedia system were evaluated and compared with a conventional system which visualized ergonomic guidelines in the form of a traditional report on scrollable web pages. The interactive multimedia system was the result of a participatory design process with experts and potential users in collaboration with Saab Automobile. The system was, in general, faster to use with lower dispersion in performance speed and number of incorrect answers compared to the conventional system. No statistically significant differences were found between males and females or between the five groups of potential users. In addition, the interactive multimedia system was experienced as more enjoyable to use, which is likely to promote interest and learning about ergonomic issues. Relevance to industry The results from this study can be used to design and improve visualization of ergonomic guidelines on an intranet, increase efficiency, and engender a positive attitude towards using ergonomic information. • Visualization of Ergonomic Guidelines – Development and Evaluation of Prototypes
  • 2003
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study attempts to discover how ergonomic guidelines should be visualized in order to make it easier and more interesting to find and interpret the guidelines throughout the construction process. A prototype, visualizing ergonomic guidelines on the intranet, has been developed and evaluated at a company that produces cars for the global market. The results show that the visualization of ergonomic guidelines should preferably be based on a picture of the physical car with hyperlinked segments easy to relate to a group of guidelines or a specific guideline. The specific ergonomic guidelines should preferably have the dimensions illustrated in pictures, with body parts showing dimensional relations and how the details are to be used. Animations makes it easier to understand the usage of details and dimensional relations; it also makes the presentation more fun.

  • Lighting Recommendations in Operating Theatres
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 17th World Congress on Ergonomics 2009.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • “The eyes lead the body.” A good visual environment is important for performance and wellbeing. Unsatisfactory visual conditions often induce a strained posture, more or less unconsciously, in an effort to improve vision. The requirements for the visual environment in an operating theatre are high. Surgeons or assistants who are having visual problems can induce treatment hazards. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the visual environment in operating theatres, and also examine if the surgeon’s visual acuity at near work can be improved with better glasses. Thirty percent of the surgeons had eyestrain, and those with eyestrain had three times as much musculoskeletal strain. The measurements of the illuminance and luminance show a low uniformity level on the operating table; the operating lamps give an average of 100.000 lux, while the surrounding area values are much lower. The most important recommendation for lighting intervention in the operating theatre is a more uniform illuminance on the operating table.

  • Improvements at Work. A Multi-Disciplinary Research and Dissemination Programme
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Logistik und Arbeit. ; :9/10.97 März, s. 39-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Contemporary organizations have begun to realize that competitive power and sustainability emanates to a large extent from their flexibility and ability to adapt to increasingly more rapid changes in the environment. Therefore, change and development processes are ever more tending to become oriented towards both making critical processes visible and flexible and organizing for continuous learning from experiences in day-to-day work. These experiences form the basis of both continuous improvement activities and innovations. Working life research has an important role to play in the renewal of change and development processes. Multidisciplinary research programmes contribute to quality, knowledge enhancement and the ongoing exchange of experiences in this process.. In this paper, such a programme, Improvements at Work, along with its theoretical foundations, research methods and dissimination activities, is described. Furthermore, examples of ongoing studies are presented. The two accompanying articles, present some of the individual research topics within the programme.
