  • Heat Transfer in a New Type of Heat Exchanger for Divided Solids

    • A new type of horizontal, rotating drum heat exchanger is described, which is intended for indirect heat transfer between two streams of solids or for indirect cooling or heating a stream of solids. The heat exchanger is baffled internally and the baffles have three purposes: a transport of the solids, enlargement of the heat transfer area and agitation of the particulate bed in order to achieve good mixing. Rates of heat transfer were measured for streams of four kinds of solids material: two types of sand, glass beads and steel shot. The rate of heat transfer-increased with increasing speed of rotation and fill of the particle bed. The mean particle diameter was the most important of the particle properties. Overall heat transfer coefficients were found to be higher than for most other types of indirect heaters and coolers for solids. A model of the heat transfer process is presented in which the whole resistance to heat transfer is assumed to be in the particle layers in the vicinity of the heat transfer wall. This resistance consists of two parts, one time-independent between the wall and the bed and one time-dependent in the bed itself. The model is shown to be capable of predicting the rates of heat transfer accurately.

    • The magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of some dithieno analogues of phenanthrene: benzo [2,1-b;3,4-b′] dithiophene (I) benzo [1,2-b;4,3-b′] dithiophene (II), benzo [1,2-c;3,4-c′] dithiophene (III) and benzo [1,2-b;3,4-b′] dithiophene (IV) are reported. For I–III the spectra corresponding to two different transition moment directions could be obtained from low-temperature linear dichroism spectra. The results compare well with theoretical energies, oscillator strengths, moment directions and MCD B-terms which were obtained from semi-empirical quantum mechanical calculations in the π-electron approximation.

    • We give a self-contained exposition of the “ensemble method”, a rule for calculating rotation averages of spectroscopic absorption intensities. The rule is mathematically exact and conceptually simple and applies to rotation averages for several axes of rotation occurring in helical and superhelical symmetry. A measure of dichroism, DI, is introduced which has a simple multiplicative property relative to axes of rotation. There are several applications to linear dichroism spectroscopy.

  • Retention Testing of MNOS LSI Memories

    • User-oriented test methods for MNOS LSI memories with built-in test modes have been developed. Their application is demonstrated on the commercial ER3401 memory. The memory retention is evaluated in two cases-the static retention time in power-down or in stand-by and the read retention during repeated reading, i.e., the maximum number of read cycles. In the first case, the two loss mechanisms, tunneling and thermal excitation of stored charge are evaluated separately and their influence is combined. In the second case, the limiting mechanism is slow writing by the read signal. On bases of these investigations, a static retention time of 60 yr at 70ºC and 2 yr at 125ºC is predicted and a read retention of 3x10^11 read cycles at 70ºC and 2x10^9 cycles at 125ºC is found for the ER3401.
