  • Student conceptions of motivation to study in upper secondary school in Sweden revealed through phenomenography
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pedagogical Research. - : Şahin Danişman. - 2602-3717. ; 6:6, s. 214-230
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The motivation to study may affect students’ successes and setbacks in their studies. Research has shownthat multiple factors affect students’ motivation to study. The purpose of this article is to describe howstudents conceptualize the motivation to study. We gathered empirical data through group interviewswith 32 Swedish students in six study programs. Through phenomenographical analyses, we identified sixcategories of how students experience the motivation to study: the importance of teachers, the subject, student characteristics and attitude, study results, and support from friends and family and theenvironment. Within each category, we distinguished various aspects. Differences in conceptions betweenstudents and programs or types of programs exist, but they are small. Only students from studypreparation programs emphasized the importance of student characteristics and attitude for increasingstudy motivation and getting good jobs. The study’s results show both general and distinctive content inthe meaning of study motivation. We make recommendations to develop incentives for all students, notjust those who have favourable socio-economic study conditions, to develop motivational strategies tostudy.

  • Breaking the ice : a work domain analysis of icebreaker operations
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Cognition, Technology & Work. - : Springer. - 1435-5558 .- 1435-5566. ; 20:3, s. 443-456
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Icebreakers are special-purpose ships designed to operate in different ice-covered waters, either independently or duringassistance of weaker ships. In the Baltic Sea, as well as elsewhere, they are essential for maintaining continuous sea transportservices during wintertime. Icebreaker operations are complex, and every situation in which a vessel requires assistanceis unique, due to, e.g. changing ice and weather conditions, geographical location or language proficiency of the crew onboard the icebreaker or assisted vessel. The icebreaker crew has considerable freedom to adapt to each situation, yet, forsafe operations, there are constraints to which the crew has to conform. The study presented in this paper aims at identifyingthe constraints on nautical officers on board icebreakers during operations, as well as special situations that increasecognitive load. A work domain analysis based on a group interview with nautical icebreaker officers shows the multitudeof tasks performed on board icebreakers. Furthermore, it identifies constraints specific to icebreaker operations such as iceassessment and direct icebreaking, but also generic constraints such as language and communication skills. At times, safetyand efficiency come into conflict, resulting in a trade-off between the two. When that happens, safety gets priority, and theoperation stops until the situation has been evaluated. In addition, several situations that increase cognitive load are identified, with the common denominator that they add elements of uncertainty, e.g. severe weather and technical malfunctions. Finally, further research within the area of icebreaker operations is recommended, with a continued focus on the systemconstraints, and their potential for system improvement.

  • Developing Capacities for Sustained Transnational Environmental Activism
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Facing an unequal world. - Yokohama.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most environmental problems are extremely long term and have cross-border implications. For environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs) to achieve significant impact on environmental governance cross-border and sustained activities are required. The purpose of the paper is to identify key barriers and possible pathways to develop sustained and transnationalenvironmental activism among ENGOs operating in strikingly different political contexts.  Our analysis is based on qualitative methodology and empirical analyses of ENGOs in six countries (Sweden, Germany, Poland, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia) and two regional contexts, the Baltic Sea and the Adriatic Sea regions. The study is based on document analyses and semi-structured interviews with representatives from 4-6 key ENGOs in each country. The theoretical framework departs primarily from social movement theory. The paper reveals intriguing similarities and differences between the countries regarding ENGOs' abilities to develop sustained and cross-border activism. We pay particular attention to differences in opportunity structures for resource mobilization. The last decades, the European Union (EU) has emerged as a key opportunity structure that in various ways facilitate cross-border collaboration and capacity building among ENGOs, particularly in Central and Eastern European (CEE) Countries. However, the EU also considerably shapes the conditions for ENGOs to set independent long-term agendas. With the exception of Germany and Sweden, ENGOs rely heavily on their ability to develop a "project mind-set", which in turn requires fund-raising skills and procedures. Also ENGOs in Germany and Sweden make use of public grants. However, the fact that they historically have been able to mobilize huge number of members/supporters –which is still extremely difficult particularly in post-communist countries - have profound implications for abilities to develop transnational and sustained environmental activism. We discuss the role of (dis)trust (institutional vs. family-based trust), political culture and historical legacies to analyze these remarkably different conditions for resource mobilization.

  • NGO power in global social and environmental standard-setting
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Global Environmental Politics. - : Massachusetts Institute of Technology Press (MIT Press): Arts & Humanities Titles etc. - 1526-3800 .- 1536-0091. ; 10:4, s. 36-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have seen a worldwide increase in new nonstate, multi-stakeholder organizations setting standards for socially and environmentally responsible behavior. These standard-setting arenas offer new channels for political participation for NGOs. Scholars have drawn attention to the rise and the role of NGOs in global politics, but there is less research on the power and long-term implications of NGO participation in transnational multi-stakeholder standard-setting. This article analyzes NGOs within three such global organizations: the Forest Stewardship Council, the Marine Stewardship Council, and the International Organization for Standardization on Social Responsibility. Using a power-based perspective, we demonstrate the impact that NGOs can have on multi-stakeholder work. In doing so, we analyze four types of NGO power: symbolic, cognitive, social, and monitoring power. The article further emphasizes institutional, structural, and discursive factors within multi-stakeholder organizations that create certain challenges to NGO power and participation in the longer term.

  • Repulsive van der Waals forces due to hydrogen exposure on bilayer graphene
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A. Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 1050-2947 .- 1094-1622. ; 85:1, s. 012508-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider the effect of atomic hydrogen exposure to a system of two undoped sheets of graphene grown near a silica surface (the first adsorbed to the surface and the second freestanding near the surface). In the absence of atomic hydrogen, the van der Waals force between the sheets is attractive at all separations, causing the sheets to come closer together. However, with the addition of atomic hydrogen between the sheets, the long-range van der Waals interaction turns repulsive at a critical concentration. The underlying triple layer structure (SiO(2)-atomic hydrogen gas-air) gives rise to a long-range repulsion that at large-enough separations dominates over the more rapidly decaying attraction between the two-dimensional undoped graphene sheets (and between the outer graphene sheet and SiO(2)). This may be an avenue to tune the separation between two graphene sheets with the gas concentration. The doping of the graphene layers increases the attractive part of the interaction and hence reduces the net repulsive interaction.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Utbildning & Demokrati. - 1102-6472. ; Vol 18:NR 2, s. 39-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multilingualism in teacher education – a missing perspective This article is based upon fieldwork within a comprehensive teacher education program. Questions were asked about how student teachers are prepared for work/employment in an educational system, which is characterized by pluralism in terms of multilingualism and a second language perspective? How does one speak about language and pluralism? Is a multilingual perspective in teacher education presented as a competence for some or for all? How do various actors look at ”questions of linguistic pluralism”? On the one hand, the result, i.e. the answers provided, can be seen as fairly meagre, but this does on the other hand also tell us something more generally about how issues pertaining to language and pluralism are regarded in a teacher education program. In the categorizations and interpretations that are articulated, perspectives on multilingualism and second langue acquisition (if and when they are mentioned) are in different ways often related to ”the Others” and to what can partly be referred to as a deficiency perspective. Similar talk is also heard from teacher education at other sites of learning. These topics are dealt with in the first part of the article. Thereafter follows a section about viewing multilingualism in a more general perspective, where multilingualism is also regarded as an asset – here we encounter above all various actors within the field of linguistics. Didactic aspects as well as identity and social categorization are highlighted. At the end of the article, a concluding and more comprehensive discussion about multilingualism and a second language perspective, which also focuses on steering / policy documents, is brought to the fore. Teacher education appears to be fairly national(ist) in spite of recurring talk about increasing globalization and internationalisation. To jointly regard multilingualism and intercultural education as a part of a democratic process is conspicuous by its absence. In this discussion, which also comprises the governmental inquiry, from 2008 - En hållbar lärarutbildning (A sustainable teacher education, SOU 2008: 109) – attention is given to a transnational perspective on education and competence.

  • Secretion of granule proteins from eosinophils and neutrophils is increased in asthma
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0091-6749 .- 1097-6825. ; 87:1 Pt 1, s. 27-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The activity of eosinophil and neutrophil granulocytes with respect to secretion of granule proteins was studied in 30 patients with asthma and with varying severity of their disease. Granulocytes were stimulated with serum-opsonized Sephadex particles, and the released amount of eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), eosinophil protein X (EPX), and myeloperoxidase was measured by means of specific radioimmunoassays. Eosinophils from patients with asthma released significantly more (p less than 0.001) ECP and EPX after 20 minutes of incubation than cells from control subjects without asthma. The release of myeloperoxidase from neutrophils was also somewhat higher (p less than 0.03). The serum concentrations of ECP and EPX were also significantly increased (p less than 0.001) in the group with asthma. No significant relationships were found between clinical variables and the secretory activity of either eosinophils or neutrophils. We conclude that eosinophils and, to some extent, neutrophils from subjects with asthma have an increased propensity to release their granule proteins, which we suggest is a consequence of priming of these cells.
