  • Ingår i: Feminist Media Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-0777 .- 1471-5902. ; 9:4, s. 477-491
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the past two decades, an increasing number of young women have taken the tools of media production into their own hands; feminist zines have evolved into a medium for transnational dialogue, community building, and networking. In focusing on the Plotki Femzine (2006, 2007), a Central and Eastern European (CEE) feminist print and online zine project, we use the theoretical framework of ?rhizomatic media? to problematize existing scholarship on feminist zines. Much of this scholarship sees zines as venues that construct a sense of ?authenticity? through the use of the autobiographical voice and an outright rejection of mainstream media practices. Considering the rhizomatic processes of alternative knowledge production in Plotki publication, we draw on post-structuralist gossip theory to examine the Plotki Femzine as a site of feminist discourse. In particular, we show how the Plotki Femzine builds cross-border collaboration and "spreads rumours" of a feminist kind.

  • Analyzing Citizen Engagement With European Politics on Social Media
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Politics and Governance. - : Cogitatio. - 2183-2463. ; 10:1, s. 90-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Contributions in this thematic issue focus explicitly on citizens and their online engagement with European politics. For social media research in the European Union, citizens remain an understudied actor type in comparison with political elites or news organizations. The reason, we argue, is four key challenges facing social media research in the European Union: legal, ethical, technical, and cultural. To introduce this thematic issue, we outline these four challenges and illustrate how they relate to each contribution. Given that these challenges are unlikely to dissipate, we stress the need for open dialogue about them. A key part of that involves contextualizing research findings within the constraints in which they are produced. Despite these challenges, the contributions showcase that a theoretical and empirical focus on citizens’ social media activity can illuminate key insights into vitally important topics for contemporary Europe. These include civic participation, institutional communication, media consumption, gender inequality, and populism.

  • Gender differences in the use of positive and negative terms by authorship teams: a study of citation contexts
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The way in which women present their research accomplishments, in comparison to men, has been regarded as one of the factors causing gender gaps in academic life sciences (Lerchenmueller, Sorenson and Jena, 2019). As the notion of 'excellence' within audit cultures in academia implicitly reflects images of masculinity, the promotion of research findings for women might be considered counter stereotypical behaviour. Women might be criticised for this behaviour, even sometimes by other women (Rudman, 1998; McKinnon and O’Connell, 2020).The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a difference between authorship teams, in terms of the use of positive/negative terms, when citing papers of the same gender composition teams.

  • Open, transparent management and the media: The managers’ perspectives
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Hospital Administration. - : Sciedu Press. - 1927-6990 .- 1927-7008. ; 6:2, s. 1-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Delivery of health care service (HCSs) is a public issue in Sweden. Managers’ decisions and strategies are expected to be open to debate, investigation and scrutiny by the media. There is, however, little knowledge about how managers at local level communicate with the media. The aim of this study is to present an empirically grounded conceptual model of how operative health care managers perceive and handle media communication in open, transparent management of public HCSs. Methods: A grounded theory approach was adopted including in-depth and follow-up interviews with 45 managers, and complemented with open-ended questions that were answered by the majority of municipal top managers of public HCSs in Sweden (n = 161). Results: Communicating with the media were interacting in spite of unequal logics and conditions regarding openness in communicating. In managers response to media misrepresentation (inaccurate, narrow and skewed reporting) of the often complex and value-laden issues of HCSs they put highlighted dignity, correctness regarding facts, and protection of integrity. Managers’ approaches were to mobilize individual and organizational resources in order to support openness and reduce uncertainties, through crafting managerial hardiness and organizational robustness, and over the longer term, by building authentic openness through awareness, control and acceptance of the conditions. Conclusions: In conclusion, handling the media can be challenging owing to different logics for reporting, but the media plays a vitally important role in the transparency of the management. Dealing with the pressure of media attention can either have negative consequences or contribute to more open and authentic internal and external communication.

  • Lonely at the top. Gendered media elites in Sweden
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journalism. - 1464-8849. ; 6:3, s. 265-290
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Nordic countries are often noted for their high level of gender equality. The media sector is no exception and it is true that almost 50 percent of Swedish journalists are female. However, female presence at the senior level of media organizations remains much lower. This article analyses the Swedish media elite from a gender perspective. It is based on a survey study among all top-level managers (the Swedish national institutional elites) in seven different social fields and interprets the results by drawing upon Bourdieu’s theories on habitus, capital and field and Toril Moi’s ‘appropriation’ of Bourdieu (in the essay ‘Appropriating Bourdieu’, in What is a Woman? And Other Essays). Differences and similarities between men and women in the media elite are identified and analysed, including differences regarding social background and the amount and type of capital they have accumulated when reaching the top. The main conclusion is that the acquisition of social capital is of major significance to counterbalance the negative capital of femaleness in reaching a senior management position in the media.
