  • Detecting and measuring rings in banknote images
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Engineering applications of artificial intelligence. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 0952-1976 .- 1873-6769. ; 18:3, s. 363-371
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Various intelligent systems show a rapidly growing potential use of visual information processing technologies. This paper presents an example of employing visual information processing technologies for detecting and measuring rings in banknote images. The size of the rings is one of parameters used to inspect the banknote printing quality. The approach developed consists of two phases. In the first phase, based on histogram processing and data clustering, image areas containing rings are localized and edges of the rings are detected. Then, in the second phase, applying the hard and possibilistic spherical shell clustering to the extracted edge pixels the ring centre and radii are estimated. The experimental investigations performed have shown that even highly occluded rings are robustly detected. Several prototypes of the system developed have been installed in two banknote printing shops in Europe. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Engagera och aktivera studenter med inspiration från konferenser : examination genom poster-presentation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings 2014, 8:e Pedagogiska inspirationskonferensen 17 december 2014. - Lund : Lund University.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Predictive Maintenance of Machine Tool Linear Axes : A Case from Manufacturing Industry
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Procedia Manufacturing. - : Elsevier. - 2351-9789. ; 17, s. 118-125
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In sustainable manufacturing, the proper maintenance is crucial to minimise the negative environmental impact. In the context of Cloud Manufacturing, Internet of Things and Big Data, amount of available information is not an issue, the problem is to obtain the relevant information and process them in a useful way. In this paper a maintenance decision support system is presented that utilises information from multiple sources and of a different kind. The key elements of the proposed approach are processing and machine learning method evaluation and selection, as well as estimation of long-term key performance indicators (KPIs) such as a ratio of unplanned breakdowns or a cost of maintenance approach. Presented framework is applied to machine tool linear axes. Statistical models of failures and Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) are built based on data from a population of 29 similar machines from the period of over 4 years and with use of proposed processing approach. Those models are used in simulation to estimate the long-term effect on selected KPIs for different strategies. Simple CBM approach allows, in the considered case, a cost reduction of 40% with the number of breakdowns reduced 6 times in respect to an optimal time-based approach.

  • Nomograms for preoperative prediction of axillary nodal status in breast cancer
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Surgery. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0007-1323 .- 1365-2168. ; 104:11, s. 1494-1505
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Axillary staging in patients with breast cancer and clinically node-negative disease is performed by sentinel node biopsy (SLNB). The aim of this study was to integrate feasible preoperative variables into nomograms to guide clinicians in stratifying treatment options into no axillary staging for patients with non-metastatic disease (N0), SLNB for those with one or two metastases, and axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) for patients with three or more metastases. Methods: Patients presenting to Skåne University Hospital, Lund, with breast cancer were included in a prospectively maintained registry between January 2009 and December 2012. Those with a preoperative diagnosis of nodal metastases were excluded. Patients with data on hormone receptor status, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 and Ki-67 expression were included to allow grouping into surrogate molecular subtypes. Based on logistic regression analyses, nomograms summarizing the strength of the associations between the predictors and each nodal status endpoint were developed. Predictive performance was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Bootstrap resampling was performed for internal validation. Results: Of the 692 patients eligible for analysis, 248 were diagnosed with node-positive disease. Molecular subtype, age, mode of detection, tumour size, multifocality and vascular invasion were identified as predictors of any nodal disease. Nomograms that included these predictors demonstrated good predictive abilities, and comparable performances in the internal validation; the area under the ROC curve was 0·74 for N0 versus any lymph node metastasis, 0·70 for one or two involved nodes versus N0, and 0·81 for at least three nodes versus two or fewer metastatic nodes. Conclusion: The nomograms presented facilitate preoperative decision-making regarding the extent of axillary surgery.

  • Study Abroad in Sweden : Japanese Exchange Students’ Perspectives of Language Use in University EMI Courses
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Languages. - : MDPI. - 2226-471X. ; 7:1, s. 1-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the availability of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) courses, an increasing number of international students have been joining Swedish universities. However, the language use in Swedish EMI courses may display unique features; while many Swedish students have high English language proficiency, code-switching between Swedish and English is reported as a common practice by both lecturers and students, even when international students are present. Moreover, the term “international students” is often used to include students of various statuses and linguistic abilities, and the experiences and perspectives of short-term exchange students towards the language use in Swedish EMI courses are rarely documented. The current study investigates the perspectives of short-term exchange students from Japan enrolled in EMI courses at a university in Sweden. Questionnaire and focus group interview confirmed previous studies regarding the language-use practices in the classrooms. Moreover, the rate of speech, turn-taking, and background knowledge were found to hinder the learning and participation of the exchange students. The findings suggest the need to raise awareness of the language practices in Swedish EMI courses to students, lecturers, and other universities in order to support the learning experience of short-term exchange students

  • Behavior of micropipes during growth in 4H-SiC
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Materials Science Forum, Vols. 389-393. ; , s. 395-398
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The disturbance of the growth steps in SiC epitaxy and the formation of stacking faults (SFs) in the vicinity of a micropipe were studied by Atomic Force Microscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy. Shallow trenches are observed in front of the micropipes due to the distortion of the growth steps towards of the micropipe. The trenches are related with extended (1 (1) over bar 00) type SFs bounded by 1/6 < 11 (2) over bar1 > partial dislocations. These results are also supported by synchrotron X-ray topography.
