  • Fluorescence enhancement from single DNA molecules confined in SiO 2 nanochannels
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 14th International Conference on Miniaturized Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences 2010, MicroTAS 2010; Groningen; Netherlands; 3 October 2010 through 7 October 2010. - 9781618390622
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate that the detected emission intensity from YOYO-labeled DNA molecules confined in 180 nm deep Si/SiO2 nanofunnels changes significantly and not monotonically with the width of the funnel, an emission enhancement that is only detected for emitted light polarized parallel to the channel. We explain the enhancement effect as being due to optical phenomena in the channels. The enhancement effect may be of importance for quantitative fluorescence microscopy and for experiments with a tight photon budget.

  • Partially Exchangeable Networks and architectures for learning summary statistics in Approximate Bayesian Computation
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 36th International Conference on Machine Learning. - : PMLR. ; 2019-June, s. 11795-11804
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a novel family of deep neural architectures, named partially exchangeable networks (PENs) that leverage probabilistic symmetries. By design, PENs are invariant to block-switch transformations, which characterize the partial exchangeability properties of conditionally Markovian processes. Moreover, we show that any block-switch invariant function has a PEN-like representation. The DeepSets architecture is a special case of PEN and we can therefore also target fully exchangeable data. We employ PENs to learn summary statistics in approximate Bayesian computation (ABC). When comparing PENs to previous deep learning methods for learning summary statistics, our results are highly competitive, both considering time series and static models. Indeed, PENs provide more reliable posterior samples even when using less training data.

  • Investigating the Effects of MWE Identification in Structural Topic Modelling
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 19th Workshop on Multiword Expressions, MWE 2023 - Proceedings. - : ACL. ; , s. 36-44
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multiword expressions (MWEs) are common word combinations which exhibit idiosyncrasies in various linguistic levels. For various downstream natural language processing applications and tasks, the identification and discovery of MWEs has been proven to be potentially practical and useful, but still challenging to codify. In this paper we investigate various, relevant to MWE, resources and tools for Swedish, and, within a specific application scenario, we apply structural topic modelling to investigate whether there are any interpretative advantages of identifying MWEs.

  • Distributions at random events
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 2ND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON EVENT-BASED CONTROL, COMMUNICATION, AND SIGNAL PROCESSING (EBCCSP). - 9781509041961 ; , s. 1-8
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We discuss the generalized Rice formula approach to deriving long-run distributions of characteristics defined at random events of a stochastic process or field. The approach stems from the same principle originally introduced by Rice for the level crossing intensity in a random signal and we review its extensions to more general contexts.Events are defined on random surfaces through crossing levels of (multivariate) stochastic fields. We also account for the dynamics of spatial-temporal fields using observed velocities. Extensions beyond the Gaussian model are shown and models for sampling from the level crossing distributions are presented. The importance of these generalizations for applications is illustrated through examples.

  • Transparent Neural Networks: Integrating Concept Formation and Reasoning
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics). - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1611-3349 .- 0302-9743. - 9783642355059 - 9783642355066 ; 7716, s. 302-311
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the transparent neural networks, a graph-basedcomputational model that was designed with the aim of facilitating humanunderstanding. We also give an algorithm for developing such networksautomatically by interacting with the environment. This is doneby adding and removing structures for spatial and temporal memory. Thus we automatically obtain a monolithic computational model whichintegrates concept formation with deductive, inductive, and abductivereasoning.

  • A Deep Learning Approach to MR-less Spatial Normalization for Tau PET Images
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention : MICCAI 2019 - 22nd International Conference, Proceedings - MICCAI 2019 - 22nd International Conference, Proceedings. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1611-3349 .- 0302-9743. - 9783030322441 - 9783030322458 ; 11765 LNCS, s. 355-363
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The procedure of aligning a positron emission tomography (PET) image with a common coordinate system, spatial normalization, typically demands a corresponding structural magnetic resonance (MR) image. However, MR imaging is not always available or feasible for the subject, which calls for enabling spatial normalization without MR, MR-less spatial normalization. In this work, we propose a template-free approach to MR-less spatial normalization for [18F]flortaucipir tau PET images. We use a deep neural network that estimates an aligning transformation from the PET input image, and outputs the spatially normalized image as well as the parameterized transformation. In order to do so, the proposed network iteratively estimates a set of rigid and affine transformations by means of convolutional neural network regressors as well as spatial transformer layers. The network is trained and validated on 199 tau PET volumes with corresponding ground truth transformations, and tested on two different datasets. The proposed method shows competitive performance in terms of registration accuracy as well as speed, and compares favourably to previously published results.

  • Laplace model for multi-axial responses in fatigue analysis of a cultivator frame
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 3rd International Commercial Vehicle Technology Symposium (CVT 2014). ; , s. 141-150, s. 141-150
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reviews means for fatigue damage rates estimation using Laplace distributed multiaxial loads. The model is suitable for description of stresses containing transients of random amplitudes and locations. Explicit formulas for computing the expected value of rainflow damage index as a function of excess kurtosis are given for correlated loads. A Laplace model is used to describe variability of forces and bending moments measured at some location on a cultivator frame. An example of actual cultivator data is used to illustrate the model and demonstrate the accuracy of damage index prediction.

  • The Prevalence of mRNA Related Discussions during the Post-COVID-19 Era
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Caring is Sharing - Exploiting the Value in Data for Health and Innovation - Proceedings of MIE 2023. - : IOS Press. - 1879-8365 .- 0926-9630. - 9781643683881 ; 302, s. 798-802
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vaccinations are one of the most significant interventions to public health, but vaccine hesitancy and skepticism are raising serious concerns for a portion of the population in many countries, including Sweden. In this study, we use Swedish social media data and structural topic modeling to automatically identify mRNA-vaccine related discussion themes and gain deeper insights into how people's refusal or acceptance of the mRNA technology affects vaccine uptake. Our point of departure is a scientific study published in February 2022, which seems to once again sparked further suspicion and concern and highlight the necessity to focus on issues about the nature and trustworthiness in vaccine safety. Structural topic modelling is a statistical method that facilitates the study of topic prevalence, temporal topic evolution, and topic correlation automatically. Using such a method, our research goal is to identify the current understanding of the mechanisms on how the public perceives the mRNA vaccine in the light of new experimental findings.

  • Perceived meaning in virtual reality architectural models
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Conference on Applied Virtual Reality in Engineering & Construction Applications of Virtual Reality: Current Initiatives and Future Challenges. ; , s. 117-127, s. 117-127
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This explorative study investigated how the participants experienced a VR-presentation of an office building. Three office types (landscape, mixed and traditional) were presented in a between-subjects experimental design to employees at the Ericsson company in Sweden. The effects on the participants’ experience were measured using the Semantic Environ¬mental Scale (the SMB-scale, Küller 1975; 1991), a standardised instrument consisting of eight meaning dimensions, each measured using four to eight adjectives on seven-step scales. The SMB-results showed that the participants’ experience of the three office types differed with regard to the dimensions, pleasantness, enclosedness and social status. We also found effects of gender on the meaning dimensions affection, potency and unity. Our research, conducted in an ecologically valid context, suggests that the VR-model tested produces realistic effects on the participants’ experience.

  • Weak Emergence and Complexity
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Artificial Life XII Proceedings of the Twelfth International Conference on the Synthesis and Simulation of Living Systems. - 9780262290753 - 0262290758 ; , s. 879-886
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we consider Mark Bedau’s notion of weak emer- gence (WE) and relate it to various attempts to objectively construe complexity. We argue that the heavy reliance on a specific notion of complexity risks rendering the concept superfluous. Furthermore we discuss what sort of systems might reasonably be understood as exhibiting emergence at all and point out that the macro-level needs to be at least min- imally structured. A worry may thus be formed that macro- level generalisations provide the sort of short-cut that is ex- plicitly excluded from WE thus potentially making the con- cept apply only to chaotic systems of limited interest (in this context).
