Portable rescue device and a method for locating such a device

- A portable rescue device and a method for locating, by means of a first rescue device set in a search mode, a second rescue device set in a distress mode. In the method, a distress signal carrying a device identification is received from said second rescue device. A first bearing and a second bearing to the second rescue device are obtained. The first and second bearings are taken from a first and a second position, respectively. A distance between these positions is determined. A current distance and a current bearing to the second rescue device are determined on basis of the first and second bearings and the distance. The current bearing and the current distance are communicated to a user of the first rescue device. The portable rescue device is used for performing the method and for that purpose it includes a first communication unit for distress signal transmission and reception; a compass; a processor; a user interface; and a mode switch for switching between a search mode and a distress signal mode. The first communication device has an antenna structure that provides directional capability.

European Comparability and National Best Practices of EU-SILC : A Review of Data Collection and Coherence of the Longitudinal Component

- All best practices on comparative surveys indicate that guidelines alone do not automatically ensure accuracy and comparability. Comparative statistical products depend crucially on process quality. The inventory of EU-SILC fieldwork practices presented in this paper shows that these processes vary enormously between Member States. Even nationally, optimal designs may thus fail to deliver comparability. The situation is aggravated by the fact that EU-SILC integrates several collections, one cross-sectional and several longitudinal of varying duration. They were designed to give answers to different questions, in particular measures of poverty at one point in time and sequences of poverty over time. If, however, the same cross-sectional indicators would be obtained from each component of EU-SILC they would be expected to give coherent results. Nonetheless, we observe discrepancies of hugely varying degree between Member States. In accordance with the ESS Vision 2020 this paper therefore argues for a new regime of “controlled flexibility” of harmonisation, including infrastructures which assist Member States in the design and control of their work.

Virtual variation simulation of CAD/CAM template-guided surgeries performed on human cadavers: Part II

- Material and methodsSeventeen computer-aided plans were used for virtual variation simulation of surgeries conducted on 17 human cadavers and 145 implants placed in the cadavers. For each surgery, 10,000 virtual surgeries were performed, resulting in 1,450,000 implant placements. The results from the virtual variation simulations were statistically compared with the results from the actual surgeries. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the implant distributions (α=.05).ResultsIn the maxillae, the difference between the simulated average mean of the mean and the compared surgical average of the median was 0.22 mm (apex) and −0.35 mm (hex), and for the mandible, the corresponding values were −0.19 mm (apex) and −0.69 mm (hex). The simulated average mean of the range compared to the mean range of the maximum deviation results from the surgeries of the maxillae was 2.96 mm (apex) and 0.44 mm (hex), and 2.3 mm (apex) and 0.26 mm (hex) for the mandible. - In this paper, we explore communication protocols between two or more agents in an initially partially known environment. We assume two types of agents (A and B), where an agent of Type A constitutes an information source (e.g., a mobile sensor) with its own local objective expressed in temporal logic, and an agent of Type B constitutes an agent that accomplishes its own mission (e.g., search and rescue mission) also expressed in temporal logic. An agent of Type B requests information from an agent of Type A to update its knowledge about the environment. In this work, we develop an algorithm that is able to verify if a communication protocol exists, for any possible initial plan executed by an agent of Type B.

- This chapter introduces a selection of novel and emerging concepts in ambient pressure X-ray spectroscopies. Technical considerations and first photoemission experiments performed in and above 1 bar pressure are described. Then, X-ray spectroscopy experiments that provide high lateral (microscopy) and depth (X-ray standing-waves) resolution in ambient environments are discussed. The final part of the chapter introduces recent developments in multimodal instrumentation, such as the combination of ambient pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy with Infrared spectroscopy and X-ray scattering.
