- This doctoral thesis deals with Peder Sjogren’s (1905-1966) seven novels. By means of modern narratological instruments and with the emphasis laid on the thematic functions of the narrators, a central theme in Sjogren’s writing is uncovered. In all of Sjogren’s works the characters are tied together in a sense of guilt that is so strong that the ”fellowship” goes to the point of identification. Sjögren explores this theme by experimenting with different narrative techniques and by using a language with religious connotations.The narrators in Sjogren’s novels are engaged in existential projects; their functions are self-explorative, confessional and accusatory rather than communicative. In the analyses, analogies between Freudian psychoanalysis and the narrative situations in Sjogren’s novels are pointed out. The self-reflexive mirror is a prevalent metaphor in Sjogren’s writing, descriptive not only of the general structure of the novels but also of the ambivalent relationship between the characters. The metaphor of the mirror is interpreted both as a symbol of narcissistic escapism and of inevitable interdependence, a complicated relationship between a self-destructive tormentor and a godlike, aggressive and powerful victim.Intertextual links are established with texts by writers who were influential on the literary scene in the 1940s, especially Stig Dagerman and Jean Paul Sartre. The religious language and the Christian metaphors are interpreted in an existentialist and a phenomenological context.In a post-communicative reflection on the theme of the brotherhood of guilt, the thesis shows how Sjogren’s theme of guilt and identification invites a comparison with Emanuel Lévinas’s moral philosophy. In a final chapter striking similarities between the two writers are pointed out. Both writers find a structural analogy between the sacred encounter with the wounded face of the Other and the authentic encounter with death, and both writers interpret the moral responsibility for the Other as an obligation to beone’s brother’s keeper to the point of substitution.

- The central problem area of this dissertation concerns the connection between working life and parenthood. The main purpose is to develop an analytical strategy which validity is determined by the extent to which it can consider and cover the complexity of the conditions and practices of everyday life for working parents. Starting in an understanding of the concept life-mode as a sensitizing concept, an analytical model is developed and a Boolean approach is used to study the complex interrelation between working life and parenthood. In the dissertation the relationship between working life and parenthood is studied focusing on the work place. Parenthood, organization and gender are three key concepts which direct the analysis of the organizational forms everyday life take on. The empirical material of the dissertation comes from a questionnaire survey carried out in Sweden in 1992. The material consists of nine occupational groups, divided in women and men. A qualitative comparative method, developed by Charles C. Ragin, is used to compare organization-based adjustment situations. The factors of the analytical model are presented in binary form and tested against empirical data. The results are presented as equations that reflect the complexity of the interrelations between working life and parenthood through conjunctures of causal conditions, i e leading position, thedominance of one of the sexes at departmental level, children-specific scope of action, general scope of action, and the outcome, i e different adjustment strategies used by parents. The division of the adjustment strategies in three degrees of imposed restrictions on the work situation - everyday actions, smaller restrictions and bigger changes of the work situation.- is an attempt to account for the size of the work and family circles.

Management Control in Services. A Contingency Study of Responsibility Accounting in Highly Interactive Services

- This report examines the use of management control in services, with particular reference to the role of formal control systems in attributing and devolving responsibility within organizations. The study draws extensively on the service as well as the management control literature and advances an analytical framework based on a process-oriented approach to responsibility accounting. The study is primarily based on contingency theory, while some complementary perspectives are derived from agency theory. Two case studies are used to generate a theory of responsibility accounting in highly interactive services. The study combines deductive and inductive theorizing and makes a number of important contributions to service as well as management control research.
