  • Microscopic mechanisms influencing the volume amplified magnetic nanobead detection assay
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Biosensors & bioelectronics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5663 .- 1873-4235. ; 24:4, s. 696-703
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The volume amplified magnetic nanobead detection assay [Strömberg, M., Göransson, J., Gunnarsson, K., Nilsson, M., Svedlindh, P., Strømme, M., 2008. Nano Letters 8, 816-821] was investigated with respect to bead size, bead surface coverage of probe oligonucleotides, bead concentration and rolling circle amplification (RCA) time, with the objective to improve the understanding of the microscopic mechanisms influencing the assay. The most important findings for future biosensor development were the following: (i) small beads exhibit a much reduced tendency to cross-link several RCA products, thus enabling use of both complex magnetisation turn-on and turn-off detection strategies, whereas larger beads only allow for turn-off detection; (ii) small beads exhibit faster immobilisation kinetics, thus reducing the time for diagnostic test completion, and also immobilise in larger numbers than larger beads. Finally, (iii) by demonstrating qualitative dual-target detection of bacterial DNA sequences using 130 and 250nm beads, the bioassay was shown to allow for multiplexed detection.

  • Coating engineering for boiling heat transfer toward immersion cooling
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Advances in Heat Transfer. - : Elsevier. - 0065-2717.
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the technological advancements in electronics, thermal management is becoming a concern that considerably affects the performance of electronic parts and systems, and two-phase immersion cooling is attracting attention due to its preferable cooling capacity. In immersion cooling, heat is dissipated by boiling that occurs on hot surfaces immersed in coolants. Therefore, it is essential to investigate boiling towards the realization and optimization of immersion cooling. Extensive studies have been carried out in terms of boiling heat transfer, e.g., bubble dynamics, heat transfer mechanisms, and critical heat flux, which convincingly indicate that boiling heat transfer greatly depends on surface characteristics and liquid properties as well as interactions between surfaces and liquids. As a consequence, many technologies have been applied to tailor-made or engineered surfaces to achieve an enhancement in boiling. Accordingly, this chapter will concentrate on technologies that produce thin film coatings on target surfaces, like CPU and memories in electronics, enabling high-efficient boiling performance and having good compatibility with electronics. Specifically, the chapter will be organized mainly with the following sections: introduction, fundamentals of boiling, coating technologies for boiling enhancement, and exploration of the enhancement mechanism. Through this work, it is expected to provide general insights into boiling heat transfer and give suggestions regarding the future directions of boiling heat transfer research.

  • Probabilistic Routing Protocol for Intermittently Connected Networks
  • 2007
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This document defines PRoPHET, a Probabilistic Routing Protocol using History of Encounters and Transitivity. PRoPHET is a routing protocol for intermittently connected networks, where there is no guarantee that a fully connected path between source and destination exists at any time, rendering traditional routing protocols unable to deliver messages between hosts. These networks are examples of networks where the Delay-Tolerant Network architecture[1] is applicable. The document presents an architectural overview followed by the protocol specification.

  • Comparison of early and mid-term outcomes after fenestrated-branched endovascular aortic repair in patients with or without prior infrarenal repair
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Endovascular Therapy. - : Sage Publications. - 1526-6028 .- 1545-1550. ; 29:4, s. 544-554
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare short- and mid-term outcomes of fenestrated-branched endovascular repair (F-BEVAR) of pararenal (PRAA)/thoracoabdominal (TAAA) aortic aneurysms in patients with or without prior endovascular/open (EVAR/OAR) infrarenal aortic repair. Methods: Data from consecutive F-BEVAR (2010-2019) at two high-volume aortic centers were retrospectively reviewed. Primary endpoints were technical success, 30-day mortality, and overall survival. Secondary endpoints included 30-day major adverse events (MAE), freedom from type I/III endoleaks, reinterventions, sac expansion, and target vessel (TV) primary patency. Results: A total of 222 consecutive patients were included for analysis; of these 58 (26.1%) had prior infrarenal repair (EVAR=33, OAR=25) and 164 (73.9%) had native PRAA/TAAA. At baseline, patients with prior infrarenal repair were older (mean age=75.1 vs 71.6 years, p=.005) and the proportion of females was lower (8.6% vs 29.3%, p=.002). Technical success was 97.8% (n=217) in the entire cohort, without any significant differences between study groups (94.8% vs 98.8%, p=.08). At 30 days, there were no significant differences between patients with prior infrarenal repair as compared with those without in rate of MAE (44.8% vs 54.9%, p=.59). The 5-year estimate of survival for those who underwent native aortic repair was 61.6%, versus 61.3% for those who had a previous repair (p=.67). The 5-year freedom from endoleaks I/III estimates were significantly lower in patients who had prior infrarenal repair as compared with patients undergoing treatment of native aneurysms (57.1% vs 66.1%, p=.03), mainly owing to TV-related endoleaks (ie, type IC and/or IIIC endoleaks). No significant differences were found between study groups in rates of reinterventions and TV primary patency. Five-year estimates of freedom from sac increase >5mm were significantly lower in patients who received F-BEVAR after previous infrarenal repair as compared with those who underwent treatment of native aneurysms (48.6% vs 77.5%, p=.002).Conclusions: F-BEVAR is equally safe and feasible for treatment of patients with prior infrarenal repair as compared with those undergoing treatment for native aneurysms. Increased rates of TV-related endoleaks were observed which could lead to lower freedom from aneurysm sac shrinkage during follow-up. Nevertheless, the 5-year rates of reinterventions and TV patency were similar, thereby indicating that overall effectiveness of treatment remained satisfactory at mid-term.

  • The dioRAMA project : assessment of dioxin-like activity in sediments and fish (Rutilus rutilus) in support of the ecotoxicological characterization of sediments
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Soils and Sediments. - : Springer. - 1439-0108 .- 1614-7480. ; 13:4, s. 770-774
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Given the complex interactions of re-suspension processes and bioavailability of sediment-bound pollutants such as dioxin-like chemicals, there is need for a better integrative understanding of the cause-effect relationship of these pollutants. Currently, the majority of studies investigating potential risks of these chemicals only focus on characterizing sediment extracts via in vitro bioassays, thereby disregarding bioavailability, uptake, metabolism, and elimination rates of these compounds in vivo. To determine to which extent mechanism-specific effects in vitro reflect possible adverse effects in vivo, the research project dioRAMA, involving partnership between the Institute for Environmental Research of RWTH Aachen University and the Department Biochemistry/Ecotoxicology of the German Federal Institute of Hydrology, was established. Methods: Animals from an elevated trophic level-common roach (Rutilus rutilus)-will be exposed to sediments from two major German rivers. Exposure will be performed in a system that enables a concurrent monitoring of environmental parameters. In parallel, in vitro studies will be conducted to determine dioxin-like potentials of sediment and fish extracts from the in vivo exposure experiments using different cell lines with varying endpoints. Moreover, extract fractionation procedures, using the strategy of effect-directed analysis, will enable the detection of specific contaminant groups responsible for the biological activity observed. Conclusion: A closer interconnection between applied ecotoxicological science and regulatory needs will facilitate the improved assessment of dioxin-like compounds in sediment and biota. Consequently, this will enable their application in sediment management programs, which is one of the main goals of the dioRAMA project.

  • The role of primary health care in long-term care facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic in 30 European countries : A retrospective descriptive study (Eurodata study)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Primary Health Care Research and Development. - 1463-4236. ; 24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and aim: Primary health care (PHC) supported long-term care facilities (LTCFs) in attending COVID-19 patients. The aim of this study is to describe the role of PHC in LTCFs in Europe during the early phase of the pandemic. Methods: Retrospective descriptive study from 30 European countries using data from September 2020 collected with an ad hoc semi-structured questionnaire. Related variables are SARS-CoV-2 testing, contact tracing, follow-up, additional testing, and patient care. Results: Twenty-six out of the 30 European countries had PHC involvement in LTCFs during the COVID-19 pandemic. PHC participated in initial medical care in 22 countries, while, in 15, PHC was responsible for SARS-CoV-2 test along with other institutions. Supervision of individuals in isolation was carried out mostly by LTCF staff, but physical examination or symptom's follow-up was performed mainly by PHC. Conclusion: PHC has participated in COVID-19 pandemic assistance in LTCFs in coordination with LTCF staff, public health officers, and hospitals.
