  • Acute myeloid leukemia and clonal chromosome aberrations in relation to past exposure to organic solvents
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment and Health. - 0355-3140. ; 26:6, s. 482-491
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: The effects of occupational and leisure-time exposures on the risk of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) were investigated with emphasis on clonal chromosome aberrations (CCA) and morphological subtypes. METHODS: Consecutively diagnosed cases of AML (N=333) and 1 population referent per case were retrospectively included in the study. Information on worktasks, companies, and leisure-time activities was obtained with telephone interviews. Exposure probability and intensity were assessed by occupational hygienists. Associations were evaluated with logistic regression. RESULTS: Exposure to organic solvents was associated with an increased risk of AML [low exposure: OR 1.5 (95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.0-2.3, moderate-high exposure: OR 2.3 (95% CI 1.0-5.0)]. For exposure to solvents, but not to benzene, the OR was 1.2 (95% CI 0.69-2.0) for "low" and 2.7 (95% CI 1.0-7.3) for "moderate-high" exposure. The observed effects increased with intensity and duration of exposure. The estimated effects were higher for patients >60 years of age at the time of diagnosis. The effect of exposure to organic solvents was not differential with regard to morphology [except possibly erythroleukemia: OR 4.2, 95% CI 1.0-17 or the presence of CCA in general]. No increased risk for AML with complex CCA or with total or partial losses of chromosomes 5 or 7 were observed, but a higher risk was found for AML with trisomy 8 (OR 11, 95% CI 2.7-42) as the sole aberration. CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to organic solvents was associated with an increased risk of AML. This association was not due to benzene exposure alone and may be modified by age. Furthermore, specific associations with trisomy 8, and possibly also erythroleukemia, were suggested.

  • Food tourism as a way of integration into the Swedish labor market?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Tomorrow’s Food Travel (TFT) conference, Centre for Tourism – University of Gothenburg, 8–10 October 2018, Gothenburg, Sweden.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The tourism industry is a sector with a large income and is expected to continue its expansion both in Sweden as well as internationally. The last couple of years have seen the total consumption within the tourism industry amount to 270 billion SEK. Due to Sweden’s rich natural and cultural values, attractive and clean nature and well-functioning cities, growth is expected. However, not all parts of the country partake in the expansion at the same rate. In Gothenburg, its north-eastern districts receive almost every second newly-immigrated resident, while the pressing housing shortage locks in a familiar pattern of poor living conditions, ill health and dire future outlooks. Gothenburg continues to be a socio-economically segregated city, while its northern districts are in strong need of enhanced development to increase their level of self-sufficiency and of breaking negative patterns. At the same time, there are great assets vested in the area in the form of agricultural landscapes, attractive natural settings and a strong cultural life with influences from all over the world. To this background, this presentation looks into whether socio-economic problems inherent of a segregated city can be partly solved by engaging in the growing tourism sector and by focusing on food production, sustainable tourism, and the natural and cultural advantages of the area. This is done by investigating an ongoing municipal sustainability project in the north-eastern areas of Gothenburg. It is an interdisciplinary endeavor involving several different municipal authorities, research institutions and non-governmental organizations, with the intent to increase the areas sense of involvement and to strengthen sustainable business development within: food production, tourism, green business and climate-smart logistics platforms and networks for cooperation. The aim of this presentation is to explore how social inclusion and labor market integration can be facilitated through tourism and food.

  • A stochastic process approach to multilayer neutron detectors
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Statistics. - : Wiley. - 0303-6898 .- 1467-9469. ; 46:2, s. 621-635
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sparsity of the isotope Helium-3, ongoing since 2009, has initiated a new generation of neutron detectors. One particularly promising development line for detectors is the multilayer gaseous detector. In this paper, a stochastic process approach is used to determine the neutron energy from the additional data afforded by the multilayer nature of these novel detectors. The data from a multilayer detector consist of counts of the number of absorbed neutrons along the sequence of the detector's layers, in which the neutron absorption probability is unknown. We study the maximum likelihood estimator for the intensity and absorption probability and show its consistency and asymptotic normality, as the number of incoming neutrons goes to infinity. We combine these results with known results on the relation between the absorption probability and the wavelength to derive an estimator of the wavelength and to show its consistency and asymptotic normality.

  • The Use of English-Language Business and Finance Terms in European Languages
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Communication. - : SAGE PUBLICATIONS INC. - 2329-4892 .- 2329-4892 .- 2329-4884. ; 55:3, s. 406-440
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although it is generally accepted that English is becoming the lingua franca of international business, the details of this process are not well understood. This article uses the Google Books corpus to provide both a quantitative and a qualitative investigation of the ways in which specific English business terms are penetrating major European languages. Some English business terms now appear to be firmly established in other languages, and can be classified as lexical borrowings, while the use of other terms is better described as code-switching.

  • Multi-agent Policy Optimization for Pilot Selection in Delay-constrained Grant-free Multiple Access
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: 2021 55th Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems, and Computers. - : IEEE. - 9781665458283 - 9781665458290 - 9781665458276 ; , s. 1477-1481
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Grant-free multiple access (GFMA) mitigates the uplink handshake overhead to support low-latency communication by transmitting payload data together with the pilot (preamble). However, the channel capacity with random access is limited by the number of available orthogonal pilots and the incoordination among devices. We consider a delay-constrained GFMA system, where each device with randomly generated data traffic needs to deliver its data packets before some pre-determined deadline. The pilot selection problem is formulated to minimize the average packet drop rate of the worst user. A priority-sorting based centralized policy is derived by introducing a fairness promoting function. For decentralization, we propose a multi-agent policy optimization algorithm with improved sample efficiency by exploring the model structure. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme facilitates near-optimal coordination between devices by using only partial state information.

  • On rate allocation for multiple plants in a networked control system
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: 2012 American Control Conference (ACC). - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781457710957 ; , s. 2024-2029
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The problem of allocating communication resources to multiple plants in a networked control system is investigated. In the presence of a shared communication medium, a total transmission rate constraint is imposed. For the purpose of optimizing the rate allocation to the plants over a finite horizon, two objective functions are considered. The first one is a single-objective function, and the second one is a multi-objective function. Because of the difficulty to derive the closed-form expression of these functions, which depend on the instantaneous communication rate, an approximation is proposed by using high-rate quantization theory. It is shown that the approximate objective functions are convex in the region of interest both in the scalar case and in the multi-objective case. This allows to establish a linear control policy given by the classical linear quadratic Gaussian theory as function of the channel. Based on this result, a new complex relation between the control performance and the channel error probability is characterized.
