- Drawing on the concept of a “complex humanitarian crisis,” this paper describes how outflows of migrants from Central America were transformed into such a crisis by intransigent immigration and border policies enacted in both Mexico and the United States. We describe the origins of the migration in U.S. Cold War interventions that created many thousands of displaced people fleeing violence and economic degradation in the region, leading to a sustained process of undocumented migration to the United States. Owing to rising levels of gang violence and weather events associated with climate change, the number of people seeking to escape threats in Central America has multiplied and unauthorized migration through Mexico toward the United States has increased. However, the securitization of migration in both Mexico and the United States has blocked these migrants from exercising their right to petition for asylum, creating a growing backlog of migrants who are subject to human rights violations and predations both by criminals and government authorities, leading migrants to label Mexican routes northward as a “corridor of death.” We draw on data from annual reports of Mexico's Red de Documentación de las Organizaciones Defensoras de Migrantes (Network for the Documentation of Migrant Defense Organizations) to construct a statistical profile of transit migrants and the threats they face as reported by humanitarian actors in Mexico. These reports allow us to better understand the practical realities of the “complex humanitarian crisis” facing undocumented migrants, both as unauthorized border crossers and as transit migrants moving between the southern frontiers of Mexico and the United States.

- BACKGROUND: Platelets are hyperactive in Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and antiplatelet treatment with glycoprotein (GP) IIb/IIIa inhibitors provides better thrombotic protection in DM than in non-diabetic subjects.OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that diabetic platelets are hyperprocoagulant, and that this hyperactivity can be inhibited by GPIIb/IIIa blockade.METHODS: Patients with T2DM and gender/age/body mass index-matched non-diabetic controls were recruited (n = 12 for both) to study the effect of GPIIb/IIIa blockade on platelet procoagulant activity. Platelet phosphotidylserine (PS), factor (F) Va expression, and platelet-derived microparticle (PDMP) generation were measured by whole blood flow cytometry. Platelet-dependent thrombin generation and plasma clotting time were monitored in recalcified platelet-rich plasma.RESULTS: Compared to controls, basal platelet activation was similar, while thrombin receptor activating peptide stimulated activation was enhanced in patients with T2DM. Diabetic platelets also displayed more profound elevations of platelet PS exposure, FVa binding, and PDMP generation upon stimulation. These alterations resulted in a hyperprocoagulant state, as evidenced by a marked increase in the platelet procoagulant index, enhanced thrombin generation, and a shortened plasma clotting time. GPIIb/IIIa blockade by c7E3 or SR121566 decreased platelet PS exposure and FVa binding, and diminished platelet procoagulant activity in patients with T2DM.CONCLUSIONS: Platelets have increased procoagulant activity in patients with T2DM. The hyperprocoagulant activity is counteracted by GPIIb/IIIa blockade.

- Syftet är att undersöka och beskriva Vänerfiskarnas sociala klassresa under 1900-talet, och hur den har påverkats av samhällets strukturella omvandling, från jordbrukssamhälle via industrisamhälle till tjänstesamhälle, samt vilka andra faktorer som har påverkat fiskarnas sociala ställning i samhället och hur rekryteringen till yrket har förändrats. Vilken social klass tillhör fiskarna idag? Ur vilka samhällsskikt kommer de? Hur ser de på sig själva som yrkesgrupp? Artikeln tar sin teoretiska utgångspunkt i klassbegreppet, som används både enligt marxistisk och weberiansk tradition. dvs både hur yrkesfiskarna kan kategoriseras utifrån position på arbetsmarknaden, inklusive ägande av kapital, och deras egna upplevelser av sin sociala position, sin sociala klass. Artikeln bygger på intervjuer med 16 yrkesfiskare samt en berättarcirkel med 7 fiskare, som gjordes 2011 och 2012 inom projektet Fisket och fiskaren i Vänern på Vänermuseet i Lidköping, vars syftet var att dokumentera fisket i Vänern från 1900-talets början fram till idag. Artikeln visar att Vänerfiskarens sociala ställning har förändrats mycket under 1900-talet, från att vara en mångsysslande småbonde eller torpare, till att bli en specialiserad yrkesarbetare och egenföretagare. Detta har sin grund i den förändrade ekonomiska samhällsstrukturen, med den tilltagande industrialiseringen och utvecklingen av ett tjänstesamhälle. Andra faktorer som har påverkat fiskarnas sociala ställning och deras möjligheter att försörja sig på sitt yrke är teknikutvecklingen, förändrade konsumtionsmönster, ekologiska förhållanden, ett ökat miljömedvetande, en förändrad marknadssituation och myndigheternas beslut att mer i detalj reglera fisket. Fortfarande är fiskarens plats i klassamhället svår att klart definiera. Han eller hon är både arbetare och egenföretagare på samma gång. Även den subjektiva klasstillhörigheten är oklar. Framför allt är fiskarna Fiskare med stort F, fångstmän och fångstkvinnor i tjänstesamhället, och denna yrkesidentitet har blivit allt starkare under seklets gång.

- The increased production of cultured milk products has environmental consequences. To counteract the environmental impact from the dairy industry, it is important to process the products in a sequence designed to minimise waste. In a previous study a model was constructed to minimise the waste caused by a sequence for a given set of products and to calculate the environmental impact of a waste minimised sequence. This study applies successfully the model in case studies at two dairies. The number of products to be sequenced varied: Dairy A had 34 products and Darry B had 16. The sequenced products were yoghurt, sour cream, cold sauce and creme fraiche, all with multiple flavours. The difference in number of products to be sequenced offered the opportunity to use both of the two model sequencing solutions: the heuristic and the optimised. The role of frequency of each product to be sequenced was investigated. Scenarios with differing frequencies were used in the case studies. The result showed clearly that the waste caused by a sequence decreased when product frequency was reduced. From a life cycle perspective, the environmental impact of processing cultured milk products can be greatly reduced by adopting sequences with fewer changes of product. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd.
