  • Southern perspectives on race/gender/sexuality - undisciplined applied linguistics
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Cadernos Discursivos. - 2317-1006. ; 1:1, s. 8-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drawing upon current theoretical discussions around the coloniality of power/knowledge, the aim of this article is to investigate a specific moment in recent South African history – the student protests that shook the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and indeed the country in 2015 and 2016. Particular focus is put on practices, that is, what students did and how their embodied performances were received on a variety of media platforms. From this vantage point, the article illustrates the coloniality of power/knowledge that regulates the intersectional nexus points of gender and race, and creates specific regimes of intelligibility and unintelligibility that praise or dismiss similar embodied speech acts. Ultimately, the examples from South African student protests are presented in the article with a view to reigniting the project of undisciplined applied linguistics (Moita Lopes 2006), an academic enterprise that among other things makes visible those complex inscriptions of privilege/oppression that we carry as a result of colonial history.

  • Tel Aviv as a space of affirmation versus transformation: Language, citizenship, and the politics of sexuality in Israel
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Linguistic Landscape. - : John Benjamins Publishing Company. - 2214-9953 .- 2214-9961. ; 4:3, s. 278-297
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we investigate the spatial politics of sexuality in Israel by focusing on two different but related data sets: (1) the official video for Tel Aviv Pride 2013 produced by the Mizrahi Jewish music group Arisa; and (2) a protest against the Occupation of Palestine performed at Tel Aviv Pride in 2017. We analyze these examples with the help of a theoretical framework that offers a dynamic conceptualization of citizenship and its semiotic manifestations, drawing on Fraser’s (1995) distinction between affirmative and transformative strategies of social justice. In line with the remit of this special issue, we highlight the importance of taking sexuality as an entry point for Linguistic Landscape analysis. More specifically, we argue that a focus on sexuality in space opens up a window into the affective, intimate and embodied dimensions of politics.

  • The Mediation of Genre, Identity, and Difference in Contemporary (Popular) Music Streaming
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Twentieth Century Music. - : Cambridge University Press. ; , s. 1-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Music streaming service Spotify has recently declared that genre is becoming less important in popular music culture, linking this idea to post-identity claims. In contrast, the central argument of this article is that genre continues to matter in music streaming, where algorithmic recommendation systems remediate genre and its association with constructions of identity and difference. We examine Spotify's mediation of genre through a multimodal discourse analysis of genre metadata as presented on the website Every Noise at Once, playlist curation, and media discourse. Analysing the genres bubblegrunge and rap français (French rap), we show that the algorithmic and human processes of Spotify and its users rearticulate genre, shaping, in turn, patterns of recommendation, curation, and consumption. These processes remediate earlier constructions of identity, temporality, and place in music culture. Simultaneously, they intensify differentiation and individuation, tying in with postulations of multiplicity and diversity in neoliberalism that conceal power imbalances.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Gender Isssues in Learning and Working with Information Technology. - Hershey, New York : Information Science Reference. - 9781615208135 ; , s. 83-98
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish public sector is involved in an overwhelming change process aiming toward creating a good-service society based on information technology. Rationalisation, efficiency and effectiveness are the leading signs in the dominating discourse of Swedish society of today. This discourse is silent about public sector employees, their agencies, their participation, and how the public sector is the dominant labour market for women. Alternative stories of women’s presence in the creation of a good-service society are presented with a focus on performances of gender, skills, learning and technology. The empirical material was collected in municipalities in the south east of Sweden. Methods sensitive to everyday practices in order to create space and time for women and their stories were developed and used. The methodological approaches, feminist technoscience, provide opportunities to move beyond the dominating IT discourses in order to make visible other discourses where women are present.

  • Decolonizing Newsmaking on YouTube : The Case of Climate Journalism during the COP26 Summit
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the role of newsmaking on the digital platform YouTube during the 2021 Climate Change Summit. Drawing on data collected with the software NodeXL Pro, we assess the connected communities, authorities, and popularity within a YouTube comment network. The data set of the investigation was assembled by the query ’COP26’. Drawing on the measures of influence in-degree, out-degree and PageRank, were ranked the YouTube channels of the researched network. In addition, the layout algorithm Force Atlas 2 was employed to detect network clusters in the software program Gephi. Finally, the study drew on Natural Language Processing to analyze the comment corpus. Our key findings suggest that YouTube channels of well-established, professional news corporations, such as BBC News, DWNews, and Sky News, reached high scores for the PageRank analysis. Based on the evidence collected, we argue that professional news corporations acted as influencers during the coverage of the 2021 Climate Summit on YouTube. This investigation contributes to understanding the role of digital platforms in the science communication on climate change and the negotiations of (post)colonial pasts. Its findings imply that claims for climate justice are increasingly played out within a diverse, global transmedia ecology. Climate justice is increasingly intertwined with decolonial voices.

  • The Taste of Ageing, a 26-Year Analysis of Publications in the International Journal of Wine Business Research : An Abstract
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Back to the Future. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319660226 - 9783319660233 ; , s. 341-342, s. 341-342
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study analyses the content of the International Journal of Wine Business Research (IJWBR) and gives editors, reviewers, authors and practitioners an overview over the journal’s development over 26 years. The articles published in the journal since its inception in 1989 till 2014, inclusive, were analysed in two time frames. The first time frame covers 1989–2006 as the International Journal of Wine Marketing (IJWM), while the second time frame covers 2007–2014 as IJWBR, the new name under which the journal relaunched. All types of articles are included in the analysis with the exception of editorials, guest editorials and research notes. Five main themes are addressed: the nature of authorship, the most prolific and influential authors, characteristics of the manuscripts, regional distribution of the wine’s region-of-origin and focal markets, and the most common research themes. The content analysis of this journal sheds light on how the style of the journal has evolved since its inception in 1989 onto the second time frame. The types of articles and methods used have been consistent in the early issues (1989–2006). However, since 2007 the journal has welcomed more academic and quantitative articles. The change motivated new authors to write longer articles, collaborate more and use more references, tables and figures. As a result, the journal’s impact has increased significantly. In addition, empirical studies published in the journal indicated an increase in the publications covering the Americas as both regions of origin and focal markets, as compared to other regions. This is the first time a content analysis has been carried out for IJWBR. The objective is to help authors identifying new and interesting research areas as well as to give editors and reviewers insight into the style and areas explored since the journal’s inception. By using software tools for data collection and analysis, the study is bound to the limitations inherent from these tools.

  • Employing creative research methods with tweens in Estonia and Sweden : Reflections on a case-study on multimodal virtual identity constructions
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of technology in human services. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1522-8835 .- 1522-8991. ; 30, s. 250-261
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we discuss our experiences from setting up workshops, inspired by creative research methods (Gauntlett, 2005, 2007), on the theme of construction of online identities by young people (aged 13–14 years) in Estonia and in Sweden. Our primary focus is on the opportunities and possible challenges involved when using creative research methods to study the identity construction process of young people by engaging them in participatory, creative activities. Our experiences indicate that such an approach can be especially beneficial when working with young people, as it enabled us to observe the actual construction and usage of gender codes and norms, both in the offline peer group context and in an online setting.

  • Single parents : representations and resistance in an international context
  • 2021
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This edited volume addresses how single mothers and fathers are represented in novels, self-help literature, daily newspapers, film and television, as well as within their own narratives in interviews on social media. With proportions varying between countries, the number of single parents has been increasing steadily since the 1970s in the Western world. Contributions to this volume analyse how various societies respond to these parents and family forms. Through a range of materials. methodologies and national perspectives, chapters make up three sections to cover single mothers, single fathers and solo mothers (single mothers who became parents through assisted reproductive technologies). The authors reveal that single parenthood is divided along the lines of gender and socioeceonomic status, with age, sexuality and the reason for being a single parent coming into play.
