    • Librarianship of the Past and the Present. In this articie the author iooks to former times to discover the foundation of modern librarianship. Although we still have far to go Ín the fleld of in-formation technology, the author contends that without the bibliographical groundwork done by previous centuries' librarians, electronic information retrieval would not be as advanced as it is today. To support his contention the author describes the ancient library at Ebla in SyrÍa, gives an account of the bibliographical work of Konrad Gesner and ends by recounting aspects of former librarian of the British Library, Antonio PanizzÍ's work. The article begins by describing the Hbrary at Ebla. This library is the oldest known library in the world. It Ís interesting not only because of the large amount of cuneiform tablets which were found there but also because it gives us a good idea of what library services were like 4.500 years ago. The tablets were classified and shelved accordingly; the library was also a centre for scientifíc research. The SwÍss naturalist, Konrad Gesner, has been called the fírst modern bibliographer. His bibliography, Bibliotheca univer-salis, is renowned throughout the library world. His solutions to various bibliographic problems are still considered useful in many ways. Antonio Panizzi reorganised the British Library turning it into the great library it is today. Librarianship has a glorious past and can certainly look forward to a glorious future.

    • What is a „Book"? In this article the author defines the book as any text carrier regardless of form. The article starts off with an account of the Swedish art historian Lars Vilks' activities at Kullaberg in Sweden. Vilks is best known for his stone sculpture on the beach which was later judged to be a book, given the title Arx, complete with ISBN-number and cataloguing data in the Swedish National Database LIBRIS. The University Library in Lund, which is a deposit library, has claimed a deposit copy, a task which is easier said than done. Arx is 6 meters high and 12 meters wide and weighs 150 tons. With Arx as his starting point the author contends that the definition of a book is not all that simple. He goes on to recount the history of the book starting with oral legends and ending with the electronic book, which he judges to be the next logical step in the cvolutionary proccss of the book. He also cites other examples of unusual books including imaginary books, books that were never written etc.

  • "Núpufellsbók" : Gömul prentuð lögbók án útgáfustaðar og árs
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Ritmennt. - Reykjavík : Landsbókasafn Íslands. - 1027-4448. ; 2, s. 35-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An attempt is made to find the answer to the question as to where and when a particular edition of the Icelandic lawbook Jónsbók, known as "Núpufellsbók", was printed. It is known to have been printed in the period 1580-1624, and a study of Icelandic type-faces from the period, using methods developed by the German librarian Konrad Haebler about the turn of the century, reveals that the 3rd edition of the lawbook ("Núpufellsbók") was most probably printed at Hólar about 1620.

  • Upphaf Þjóðólfs 1848
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Ritmennt. - Reyjhavík : Landsbókasafn Íslands - Háskólabókasafn. - 1027-4448. ; 3, s. 65-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Þjóðólfur, the first modern newspaper published in Iceland, started to come out in 1848, 150 years ago. A bimonthly publication, Þjóðólfur flourished for more than half a century until forced to give way to the daily newspapers in the second decade of the 20th century. Early accounts of the establishment of Þjóðólfur are examined critically and an attempt is made to draw up a new and clearer picture as to how it came ínto being.
