  • Ethics in school : a study of the foundation and methods for value communication
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is about a coming project concerning a coherentist approach to ethics in school. The project has two main parts; one theoretical and one empirical. The former focuses on philosophical problems and issues concerning coherentism as a metaethical position in general, and particularly when applied to the field of value education, and the latter aims to study some consequences of a coherentist approach to the study of discussing ethical matters with children.Metaethical coherentism is a position in the discussion about justification of moral judgements. According to coherentism, we build some kind of web in which different moral judgements are connected by some justification‐relation or the like. Some judgements might be more central than others, but these can be justified by the more particular and peripheral ones, and vice versa. Coherentism differs from foundationalism, according to which there are some foundational judgements that are not justified by any other judgements. The rest of our judgements are justified if they are justified by this foundation. We wish to study what benefits a coherentist approach might have in the study of ethical discussions in school. In Sweden, the educational system has as one of its main purposes to mediate a "value foundation" based on "Christian ethical tradition and western humanism" to the pupils. Suppose now that you have a foundationalist approach to ethical discussion in schools, as many seem to have had historically, and that some pupil expresses the judgement that some of his classmates have a lower value than him, due to the colour of their skin. This judgement conflicts with the judgement that the colour of ones skin does not have any bearing of ones value, included in the value foundation of the school. According to a foundationalist, we here have a conflict between foundational values, or so we can suppose. In this case, there is nothing obvious to do to resolve this conflict, because the foundational values cannot be justified; it is supposed that we simply realise the correctness of them by our moral intuition, or the like. A coherentist, on the other side, could point to how these two different judgements gain different amount of justification from other judgements, and thereby hopefully find consensus, and hence dissolve the conflict.Coherentism is not theoretically unproblematic, though. One problem is how to understand the justification‐relation. What does it mean that two propositions justify each other? Philosophers have discussed several different proposals. We give a new proposal, based on some of Arne Naess' theories. With regard to methods for ethical discussion in relation to a coherentistic approach, it seems as a "philosophy with children" approach will seem as a natural choice.

  • Preparing for Masters´ Studies: A Web Based Tool For Self-Assessment and Knowledge Gap Mitigation
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a project, conducted by three European universities and a software company, funded by Erasmus +, Strategic Partnership. The project addresses the problem that sometime masters´ students do not get their degree within the allocated time, if at all. Apparently some students with the formal prerequisites to register for a master's programme still lacked the actual abilities to manage their studies. The solution was to design an online HTML5 platform to house self-assessment and learning resource modules for four different master's programmes in Europe. The modules were intended to illustrate the level and abilities that potential applicants were supposed to bring into their studies by a self-assessment test. In case lacking abilities were revealed, the modules offer learning resources to mitigate those gaps. The access modules provides potential students with a visualization of twelve different skills and knowledge as compared to those identified by lecturers as necessary for study on the master's course. If there are weak spots identified, the students are presented with a series of learning interventions designed to remedy their ability flaws.  The authors suggest that providing potential students with this kind of material can raise their awareness of what the programme really takes. In this way students with false expectations can be avoided and the ones who applies come better prepared, which the use of access modules potentially can leads to improved enrolment, completion rate, time-to-degree and retention in a wide range of academic programmes.

  • Characteristics of Public E-services : Investigating the E-diamond Model
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: First International Conference on the Pragmatic Web, PragWeb 2006. - Bonn : Gesellschaft für Informatik. - 3885791838 - 9783885791836
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The issue of the paper is how to characterize public e-services mediated through the web. One common kind of characterization is made through stage models (e-ladders). Such models are frequently used for pol-icy-planning, evaluation and bench-marking of public e-services. E-ladder models have been criticized and as an alternative the e-diamond model has been formulated, which consists of twelve categories in three polarities (in-formative vs performative; general vs individualized; separate vs coordi-nated). The differences between e-ladder and e-diamond models are de-scribed in the paper. Empirical investigations of some public e-services based on the e-diamond model are pursued. A theoretical analysis of the e-diamond model based on the language-action perspective is performed. This follows the view that public e-services are seen as government – citizen communication. The empirical and theoretical investigations give further support to the e-diamond model.

  • From e-ladder to e-diamond - re-conceptualising models for public e-services
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 14th European Conference on Information Systems,2006. - Göteborg : Göteborgs universitet. - 9789163198946 ; , s. 584-595
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is rapid growth in the development and launching of new public e-services to citizens. In doing this, government agencies base their work on national and international programs for e-government development. Many such programs include a stage model for public e-services. Many such models comprise stages of 1) information, 2) interaction, 3) transaction and 4) interaction. The wide spread use of such stage models (e-ladders) give rise to several questions. Are the categories of a stage model well chosen? Do e-services evolve through such a series of stages? Is there a real advancement between the different stages? Should one always strive for higher stages? Are higher stages inherently better than lower stages? Is a stage model a proper yardstick for evaluation and benchmarking? The paper pursues a critical examination of such stage models (called e-ladder). A conceptual analysis of stage models is performed based on a socio-pragmatic foundation. Empirical examples are given that show weaknesses in the assumptions and conceptualisations of stage models. An alternative model -the e-diamond - is presented consisting of three polarities (informative vs performative; standardized vs individualized; separate vs coordinated).

  • Visionary Design Research: Renewing e-government Support for Business Set Up
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: NEW HORIZONS IN DESIGN SCIENCE: BROADENING THE RESEARCH AGENDA. - Cham : SPRINGER-VERLAG BERLIN. - 9783319187136 - 9783319187143 ; , s. 55-70
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To set up a new business can be a complex and demanding task in a highly regulated society. There is a need for many contacts with and applications for permits to different public authorities. There exists e-government support for new businesses, e.g. business link portals with information and services based on a life-event approach. This presented research contains formulation of a vision for a renewed e-government support for business set up (an assemblage information system; joined-up support for application processes; a reversed application process). This is characterized as visionary design research, which is argued to be a legitimate research approach. The paper articulates a visionary design research approach based on multi-grounding principles. Grounding of the emergent vision is done in theoretical pre-knowledge, internally through vision coherence and empirically in identified problematic situations, articulated goals and opinions/assessments from knowledgeable practitioners.

  • On-the-job training for process operators as a strategy for competence achievement - A case study
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: [Host publication title missing]. - 9068073192 ; , s. 121-139
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The technical development in complex and highly automated production processes affects the process operator’s work and the demands on the operator. Two significant problems are difficulties in acquiring and maintaining the necessary competence and a risk of understimulation, since a stable process does not generate many active tasks, largely because of a higher degree of automation. In this case study, we were able to make a comparison between an approach to job design for solving these problems and a design of two existing operator jobs. The results suggest that this approach might be effective in practice.
