  • Healthcare in distress: A survey of mental health problems and the role of gender among nurses and physicians in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Affective Disorders. - : Elsevier. - 0165-0327 .- 1573-2517. ; 339, s. 104-110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction:The present article aimed to investigate 1) if mental health problems (depression and burnout including the dimensions; emotional exhaustion, mental distance and cognitive and emotional impairment) differed between nurses and physicians in Sweden, 2) if any differences were explained by differences in sex compositions, and 3) if any sex differences were larger within either of the two professions. Method:Data were derived from a representative sample of nurses (n = 2903) and physicians (n = 2712) in 2022. Two scales were used to assess burnout (KEDS and BAT) and one to assess depression (SCL-6). The BAT scale has four sub-dimensions. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression were used to analyse each scale and dimension separately. Results:Results showed that 16-28 % of nurses and physicians reported moderate to severe symptoms of burnout. The prevalence differed between occupations across the scales and dimensions used. Nurses reported higher scores on KEDS while physicians reported higher scores on BAT including the four dimensions. Also, 7 % of nurses' and 6 % of physicians' scores were above the cut-off for major depression. The inclusion of sex in the models changed the odds ratios of differences between doctors and nurses in all mental health dimensions except mental distance and cognitive impairment. Limitations: This study was based on cross-sectional survey data which has some limitations. Conclusion:Our study suggests that the prevalence of mental health problems is prominent among nurses and physicians in Sweden. Sex plays an important role in the difference in the prevalence of mental health problems between the two professions.

  • Mentalizing and Emotional Labor Facilitate Equine-Assisted Social Work with Self-harming Adolescents
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Child and Adolescent Social Work Journal. - new york : Springer-Verlag New York. - 0738-0151 .- 1573-2797. ; 32:4, s. 329-339
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores equine-assisted social work (EASW). Horses' capacities to mirror human emotions create possibilities for authentic relationships between clients and staff. This study examines what eases or counteracts the horse's capacity to facilitate relationships perceived by humans to be authentic. Video recordings of the human-horse interactions of three staff members and four female self-harming clients aged 15–21 years in a residential treatment facility were analyzed. The findings show that if the staff gave instructions and advice similar to traditional equestrian sports in combination with viewing the horse as an object, EASW is not facilitated. EASW seems to be facilitated when the horse is perceived as a subject by both staff and clients, provided that the staff gave meaning to the horse's behavior. The staff needed to highlight empathy for the horse when the horse is not able to fulfill its task without adding depth to the client's performance, to avoid raising defense mechanisms. The essence of EASW were perceived as eased by staff members when they focus on the client's emotions and help the client understand that the horse is acting in response to the client's and the staff's behavior through mentalizing and enacting emotional labor in regarding the horse as a subject. The results indicate the need for higher demands on staff members in order to facilitate EASW. Depending on whether the staff and the clients focus on performance or on emotions, different positive or negative outcomes on communication, self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-image will be likely to emerge.

  • Access to water as determinant of rental values: A housing hedonic analysis in Rwanda
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Housing Economics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1051-1377 .- 1096-0791. ; 26, s. 48-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we study the determinants of rental values in urban housing markets in Kigali, Rwanda. In particular, we study the value of access to piped water; due to the high costs associated with installing new piped connections, renting a property with an existing connection is often the only way for low income households to access piped water. Our results indicate that extending the piped network to a new house will in many cases raise the rental value of the house enough to pay for the cost of installing the new connection in less than two years.

  • Communicating Politics. Political Communication in the Nordic Countries
  • 2008
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Modern politics is mediated politics, and the media constitute the most important source of information and channel of communication between the governors and the governed. Media and politics are thus inextricable linked together, with the media playing an important role in contemporary democracies and for political processes. While this is true for virtually all advanced democracies, there are still important differences between countries depending on, for example, their media systems and political systems. The purpose of Communicating Politics: Political Communication in the Nordic Countries is consequently to de-scribe and analyze both the political communication systems and cases of political communication processes in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. Taken together, the chapters explore differences as well as similarities between the Nordic countries, and provide a broad view of political communication systems, practices and research perspectives in the Nordic countries.

  • Investigating Software Testing and Maintenance of Open-Source Distributed Ledger
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 2023 IEEE International Conference on Software Analysis, Evolution and Reengineering, SANER 2023. - : IEEE. - 2833-9061. - 9781665452786
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A distributed ledger is the backbone of all blockchain solutions. It provides a shared database spreading across a network of nodes. The number of DL solutions and their implementations has grown in recent years. Besides the architectural and performance promises of thesesolutions, organizations seekingto implement DL also need to consider the overall quality of the software available and its ecosystem. Particularly, previous research has identified the need to better understand the testing and maintenance practices behind these types of technologies. This paper investigates the testing and maintenance of 18 different open-source projects that implement distributed ledgers. We perform a manual inspection of test artefacts and mine the history of commits, issues and contributors of the chosen projects to understand the landscape of testing and maintenance in these projects. Our findings suggest that unit and integration tests are present in most projects, they do not follow a holistic system testing approach. Moreover, projects rely on a small team of core contributors (5 on average). While the projects are continuously maintained, larger changes are uncommon. Our results can be used for benchmarking and pinpointing areas of improvement for the development of distributed ledgers.

  • A Distributional Semantic Online Lexicon for Linguistic Explorations of Societies
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Social Science Computer Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 0894-4393 .- 1552-8286. ; 41:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Linguistic Explorations of Societies (LES) is an interdisciplinary research project with scholars from the fields of political science, computer science, and computational linguistics. The overarching ambition of LES has been to contribute to the survey-based comparative scholarship by compiling and analyzing online text data within and between languages and countries. To this end, the project has developed an online semantic lexicon, which allows researchers to explore meanings and usages of words in online media across a substantial number of geo-coded languages. The lexicon covers data from approximately 140 language-country combinations and is, to our knowledge, the most extensive free research resource of its kind. Such a resource makes it possible to critically examine survey translations and identify discrepancies in order to modify and improve existing survey methodology, and its unique features further enable Internet researchers to study public debate online from a comparative perspective. In this article, we discuss the social scientific rationale for using online text data as a complement to survey data, and present the natural language processing-based methodology behind the lexicon including its underpinning theory and practical modeling. Finally, we engage in a critical reflection about the challenges of using online text data to gauge public opinion and political behavior across the world.

  • Democracy in context: using a distributional semantic model to study differences in the usage of democracy across languages and countries
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Zeitschrift fur Vergleichende Politikwissenschaft. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1865-2646 .- 1865-2654. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cross-cultural survey research rests upon the assumption that if survey features are kept constant, data will remain comparable across languages, cultures and countries. Yet translating concepts across languages, cultures and political contexts is complicated by linguistic, cultural, normative or institutional discrepancies. Such discrepancies are particularly relevant for complex political concepts such as democracy, where the literature on political support has revealed significant cross-cultural differences in people's attitudes toward democracy. Recognizing that language, culture and other socio-political variables affect survey results has often been equated with giving up on comparative research and many survey researchers have consequently chosen to simply ignore the issue of comparability and measurement equivalence across languages, cultures and countries. This paper contributes to the debate, using a distributional semantic lexicon, which is a statistical model measuring co-occurrence statistics in large text data. The method is motivated by structuralist meaning theory, stating that words with similar meanings tend to occur in similar contexts, and that contexts shape and define the meanings of words. Compared to other methodological approaches aimed at identifying and measuring cross-cultural discrepancies, this approach enables us to systematically analyze how the concept of democracy is used in its natural habitat. Collecting geo-tagged language data from news and social online source documents this paper descriptively explores varieties in meanings of democracy across a substantial number of languages and countries, and maps ways in which democracy is used among online populations and regions worldwide.
