- Detta är en lärobok i grundläggande programmering. Den fokuserar på att lära ut det som är gemensamt för de flesta programmeringsspråk – de grundläggande elementen och programkonstruktionerna och hur dessa relaterar till varandra, oberoende av språket. Vilket språk programmet skrivs i måste vara underordnat den uppgift programmet skall lösa. Boken går därför igenom grunderna i strukturerad programmering och visar otaliga exempel i såväl flödesdiagram, strukturdiagram, pseudokod som i källkod. I slutet av boken finns kapitel som går igenom grunderna även i objektorienterad programmering.Boken tonar ner inlärningen av ett specifikt programmeringsspråk, men i slutändan måste program ändå skrivas i något språk. Exemplen är skrivna i C# som har slagit igenom som ett praktiskt programmeringsspråk på mycket kort tid och redan börjat göra sitt intåg i högskolekurser i programmering.I första hand är boken avsedd för nybörjare i programmering på högskolenivå, som vill lära sig programmeringens grunder.

Using Empirical Distributions to Characterize Web Client Traffic and to Generate Synthetic Traffic

- We model a web client using empirical probability distributions for user clicks and transferred data sizes. By using a heuristic threshold value to distinguish user clicks in a packet trace we get a simple method for analyzing large packet traces in order to get information about user OFF times and amount of data transferred due to a user click. We derive the empirical probability distributions from the analysis of the packet trace. The heuristic is not perfect, but we believe it is good enough to produce a useful web client model. We use the empirical model to implement a web client traffic generator. The characteristics of the generated traffic is very close to the original packet trace, including self-similar properties.

Depression and anxiety symptoms in relation to anthropometry and metabolism in men

- Depression is associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Abdominal obesity is also a high risk factor for these diseases. Therefore, symptoms of depression and anxiety were examined in relation to abdominal obesity. A total of 59 middle-aged men volunteered for measurements with the Hamilton Depression Scale (HDS), the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAS). These results were examined in relation to body mass index (BMI), waist/hip ratio (WHR) and sagittal abdominal diameter, a measurement of intra-abdominal fat mass, and metabolic variables. Men with WHR > 1.0 (n=26) in comparison with men with normal WHR (< 1.0, n=33) showed significantly higher sum scores in all the scales used. There were positive correlations between the sum scores of all the depression scales and the WHR or the sagittal abdominal diameter. BMI correlated comparatively weakly only with the HDS. The correlations with the WHR remained when the influence of BMI was eliminated, suggesting that obesity is less involved than centralization of body fat. Insulin and glucose were significantly related to the HDS. Morning cortisol levels were negatively related to the BDI and (borderline) to the MADRS, suggesting perturbations of the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.. We conclude that men with abdominal obesity have symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Work resumption or not after rehabilitation? : A descriptive study from six social insurance offices.

- The objective of this study was to describe measures and outcomes of vocational rehabilitation at six local national insurance offices in the same county in Sweden. Data were collected from mainframe registers and other records at each office. There were great differences in sickness allowance, incapacity rate, selected rehabilitation measures and resuming work. The percentage of sick-listed people who received any rehabilitation measure differed from 1.2 to 8.7%. The gender distribution for the study population was 36% men and 64% women and the predominant diagnosis was musculoskeletal pain conditions, which was followed by psychiatric disorders. Outcomes varied from office B, which reported 58% fully fit after completed planned rehabilitation, to office C, which reported only 24% fully fit. The clear differences in outcome between the offices indicate that various rehabilitation measures differ in effectiveness. The rehabilitation measure 'investigation of working ability' was not linked to any great proportion of people resuming work, but showed a greater correspondence to full disability pension. There were also large differences in social and demographic factors in the different municipalities. The effect of these on the rehabilitation process requires further investigation.

Health in relation to unemployment and sick leave among immigrants in Sweden from a gender perspective

- The purpose of this study was to analyze health in relation to unemployment and sick leave among immigrants from a gender perspective. Questionnaire, observations, and group discussions were used for data collection. The study group consisted of 60 unemployed persons with immigrant or refugee background, 30 women and 30 men. Slightly more than half of the participants considered theirhealth to be poor and experienced physical and/or mental disorders. The female participants in comparison to male participants experienced poorer health. The results show that there is a reciprocal influence between health, work, and migration. Immigration may cause poor health, which as a selection effect leads to unemployment and/or sick leave. Immigration may also bring about an inferior position in the labor market, which leads to poor health due to exposure effects. The influence on health is more marked for immigrant women than for immigrant men.
