  • Cancer patients' experiences of nurses' behaviour and health promotion activities : a critical incident analysis
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cancer Care. - Oxford : Blackwell Publishing. - 0961-5423 .- 1365-2354. ; 8:4, s. 204-212
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Patients with head and neck cancer report several disease- and health-related problems before, during and a long time after completed treatment. Nurses have an important role in educating/supporting these patients about/through the disease and treatment so that they can attain well-being. This study describes the cancer patients' experiences of nurses' behaviour in terms of critical incidents after nurses had given them care to promote health. The study had a qualitative, descriptive design and the method used was the critical incident technique. Twenty-one informants from the Nordic countries diagnosed with head and neck cancer were strategically selected. It was explained to the informants what a critical incident implies before the interviews took place; this was defined as a major event of great importance, an incident, which the informants still remember, due to its great importance for the outcome of their health and well-being. The nurses' behaviour was examined, and critical incidents were involved in 208 cases-150 positive and 58 negative ones-the number of incidents varying between three and 20 per informant. The nurses' health promotion activities or lack of such activities based on the patients' disease, treatment and symptoms, consisted of informing and instructing the patients as well as enabling their participation. Personal consideration and the nurses' cognisance, knowledge, competence, solicitude, demeanour and statements of understanding were found to be important. Continuous health promotion nursing interventions were of considerable value for the majority of this group of cancer patients. Oncology nurses could reconfirm and update the care of head and neck cancer patients by including health promotion activities in individual care plans. By more frequent use of health promotion models, such as the empowerment model, the nurses could identify and focus on those individuals who needed to alter their life-style as well as tailor their approach towards these patient by setting goals for well-being and a healthy life-style.

  • Attenuation of pharmaceutical substances : phytoremediation using constructed wetlands
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 13th Society of Wetland Scientists (SWS) Europe Chapter Meeting. ; , s. 19-22
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Introduction: Currently, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) do not efficiently remove pharmaceutical substances (PS). Thus, such substances are now frequently found in aquatic ecosystems worldwide. Also, concentrations of some PS in treated effluents exceed Environmental Quality Standards proposed by EU legislation. One resource-efficient option for increasing PS removal in WWTP effluents is to use constructed wetlands (CWs) as an attenuation step (Breitholtz et al. 2012; Li et al. 2014). However, very little research has been done on how to maximize the PS attenuation capacity of CWs. Therefore, a project with the aim to investigate reduction of different pharmaceutical substances in CWs with different vegetation compositions and water depths, was performed at the Experimental Wetland Area (EVA) located 20 km north of Halmstad, Sweden.

  • The influence of the Covid-19 pandemic on municipal meeting places arranging group exercise for older persons
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - Abingdon : Taylor & Francis. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 18:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: Many municipalities today, together with other stakeholders, offer group exercises for the older population via municipal meeting places, focusing on promoting good health. During the Covid-19 pandemic, these group exercises either continued in a modified form or ceased. The aim of this study was to explore involved stakeholders' experiences of group exercises for older persons arranged via municipal meeting places during the Covid-19 pandemic. METHODS: Six online focus group interviews were conducted with 25 stakeholders, such as decision-makers and representatives from the non-profit sector, from seven municipalities in Sweden. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. FINDINGS: The collaboration around the group exercises was challenged due to affected communication and decision-making. The stakeholders described the importance of adapting and finding new ways to offer group exercise. Furthermore, the re-arranging of group exercises created concerns about the well-being of the older persons but also happiness with the older persons ability to act for their own well-being during the pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the importance of the municipalities exchanging experiences, making the older persons more involved in the decision-making process, enabling a person-centred encounter with the older persons when exercising in groups, and strengthening supportive environments by sharing the ownership of arranging the group exercises with the older persons.

  • The Music Classroom in Focus : Everyday Culture, Identity, Governance and Knowledge Formation
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nordic Research in Music Education. - Oslo : Norges musikkhøgskole. - 0333-3760. ; 12, s. 101-116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is based on a larger research project with the purpose to study how market aesthetics and student’s music culture are expressed in the Swedish music classroom. The empirical material consists of video observations of classroom activities in secondary school settings in Sweden. The theoretical framework consists of poststructuralist and social constructionist theory combined with theories of late modernity, while our methodological point of departure is discourse analysis. Some important analytical concepts are identity, dominance, governance and knowledge formation. Three different strategies for incorporating market aesthetics and students’ music culture into music education were identified: learning about, reflecting on and applying. An ideological dilemma occurred when the fostering mission of school was confronted with the will to meet the students’ demands for freedom of expression. The results of the project also suggest that standardised and regulated forms of activity were counterproductive to creativity in music making. Six different strategies of gentle governance in the music classroom were identified. Popular music was presented by the teachers in a way analogous to the canon of art music that is predominant in the teaching of music history at school.

  • Nursing students' experience of their first professional encounter with people having mental disorders
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing. - Oxford : Wiley-Blackwell Publishing. - 1351-0126 .- 1365-2850. ; 8:3, s. 249-256
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to generate a theoretical model of what nursing students experience in their first professional encounter with people having mental disorders. Data was collected by interviewing 11 nursing students (aged 20-40 yrs). Grounded theory analysis was chosen for the study. Findings showed that the students' personal qualities and the patients' behavior affected the students' experience. When nursing students who had their own needs in focus met patients who rejected them, they felt helpless, and patients wishing to establish a relationship with them confirmed their positive or negative expectations. Nursing students who were focused on patients' needs met the patient as a unique person and felt confident despite being rejected by the patient, as well as proud when the patients wished to establish a relationship with them. Clinical university teachers can use the findings to gain knowledge about how each student feels as well as to guide them through their psychiatric training. The sample is small and further research is needed to generalize the findings of this study and to explore how nursing students, specialist psychiatric nurses and nurses in other disciplines experience the encounter with patients as well as how patients describe encounters with caregivers.

  • The impact of dance activities on the health of persons with Parkinson’s disease in Sweden
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - Oxfordshire : Taylor & Francis. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 16:1, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is associated with motor and non-motor symptoms that negatively influence the person’s quality of life. To reduce illness and increase quality of life, alternative treatments of PD such as dance might be experienced as beneficial. The aim of this study was to explore experiences of how a dance program in Sweden influences perceived physical, social, and emotional wellbeing in persons with PD.Method: A qualitative method with semi-structured interviews and content analysis was used, and 10 participants with variations in age, gender, and how long they had been diagnosed with the disease were interviewed. Results: The results showed that dancing was experienced as improving health, which implied feeling both calmed and excited, getting better sleep, and being able to move with more focus and freedom. The dance program was experienced as a social context through the importance of community, feelings of togetherness, and being able to compare oneself with others. Experiences of self-support included experiencing increased self-esteem and joy, but also a sense of being confirmed and having structure, which gave meaning to everyday life. Conclusions: To reduce illness and increase quality of life in persons with PD, it is important to investigate alternative treatment methods, and this study shows the importance of participating in a dance program in Sweden for the life situation and health of people with PD.
