Limits on Neutrino-Mixing from the Internal Bremsstrahlung Spectrum of I-125

- The massive antineutrino recently reported by Simpson in an experiment on tritium decay has not been confirmed by experiments on 35S decay. As an independent check, we report here the negative result of a search for the corresponding antiparticle (a massive neutrino) using the decay of 125I. As a by-product, we give accurate data on internal-bremsstrahlung spectra which we have followed over close to four decades in intensity, and we report a new way of measuring its E1/M1 ratio. The experiment provides a new and very accurate value for the 125I-125Te mass difference of 186.1 ± 0.3 keV.

- We have studied C-12 in full kinematics via the B-10(He-3, p alpha alpha alpha) reaction at an energy of 2.45 MeV. In our data we have identified states in C-12 from the ground state up to about 18 MeV, with spins ranging from 0 to 4. Due to the very good resolution, we are able to determine properties of these C-12 resonances, such as their energy, width, and spin. In this contribution preliminary results from the ongoing analysis are presented. Main focus on the precise determination of the breakup spectra for all resonances.

- The beta-delayed charged particle spectra from He-6 and He-8 were measured with a telescope consisting of a gas counter and a Si surface barrier detector. Beta-delayed deuterons and tritons are emitted in the two cases with branching ratios of (7.6 +/- 0.6) x 10(-6), E(d) > 350 keV and (8.0 +/- 0.5) x 10(-3), respectively. Both spectra present anomalies that must be due to the special structure of these nuclei (an alpha core surrounded by several neutrons).

- Delayed proton and gamma emissions following the beta decay of 33Ar have been studied. From the calculated intensity of the feeding to the T = 3/2 analogue state in 33C1, the proton intensities have been put on an absolute scale leading to a proton branching ratio of 38.7 ± 1.0%. A proton branch to the first excited state in 32S at 2230.2 keV (1π = 2+) with an intensity of 0.77 ± 0.10% was obtained from gamma singles and proton-gamma coincidence data. The complete spectroscopic information on 33Ar allows the Gamow-Teller (GT) strength function from the gound state and up to 9.25 MeV excitation energy in 33C1 to be deduced. The total strength observed in this interval is 2.90 in absolute units.

- We have investigated the continuous particle spectra following the beta decay of the neutron-rich nuclei that terminate the mass 6, 8, 9 and 11 isobaric chains. Strong beta transitions feeding the very top of the spectrum are found systematically. The favoured states are within a few MeV of the energy of the initial state. This phenomenon seems to be linked to the occurrence of a di-neutron structure or neutron halo in the drip-line nuclei.

- The proton-rich isotopes32Ar-35Ar represent the first sequence for which the superallowed Gamow-Teller strength is known out toZ− N=4. The results are compared with two sets of predictions from large shell-model calculations, which give systematically different quenching factors, on the average 0.54 and 0.89. Possible reasons for this are discussed. A comparison is also made with the Gamow-Teller strength of proton-rich isotopes of neighbouring elements.

- The Radioactive beam EXperiment (REX) at CERN-ISOLDE has been commissioned and the first experiments successfully completed during 2002 and 2003. The concept used for post-acceleration has proven to be flexible and the experimental program has therefore been extended during the past year. This paper relays some experiences drawn from using the machine in the current program and also conveys some plans for the future.

- Peripheral fragmentation of a 240 MeV/nucleon beam of the halo nucleus He-6 incident on carbon target has been studied in a kinematically complete experiment. It is found that one-neutron stripping to the unbound nucleus He-5 is the dominant fragmentation mechanism and that it leads to a spin alignment of He-5 in a plane perpendicular to the He-5 momentum vector. This is expected to be a common feature for all neutron halo nuclei.
