Managing Software Quality through Empirical Analysis of Fault Detection

- Software often constitutes a large share of today's products. To deliver a product with the level of software quality expected by the customer, software development organizations need to manage quality achievement and assessment. In practice, quality is often referred to as the lack of bugs. The research in this thesis is focused on how to improve software quality through effective and efficient detection of those software faults, and how to assess the level of software quality through analysis of the software faults. The research also further evaluates previous work, for example by replications, to continue building empirical knowledge in the field of software engineering. In a literature survey of empirical studies on inspections and testing, it is shown that the choice of detection method depends on several factors. Examples of factors that affect effectiveness and efficiency of fault detection include the type of fault and the type of artifact in which the faults occur. An experiment is conducted to compare the performance of inspections and testing on faults originating from the design. The fault detection effectiveness is also examined in a software process simulation study, validated with empirical data, to illustrate the impact of different factors in the process. A large case study was launched iteratively in an industrial context, investigating three development projects where the product quality is measured by analysis of the detected software faults. The analysis is guided with the purpose of generalizing findings obtained from other research studies. Fault distributions are examined, in terms of detection phase, location of faults, and fault density. In addition, a selection method for software reliability growth models is evaluated by application to fault data. The contribution of this thesis straddles both research and practice. The conclusions of the thesis with its replicative approach are that to generalize any finding it is necessary to explore the applicability of the techniques investigated by gradually changing their parameters in additional studies.

- This paper presents a study with the intent to examine the opportunities provided by creating and using simulation models of software development processes. A model of one software development project was created through means of system dynamics, with data collected from documents, interviews and observations. The model was simulated in a commercial simulation tool. The simulation runs indicate that increasing the effort spent on the requirements phase, to a certain extent, will decrease the lead time and increase the quality in similar projects. The simulation model visualizes relations in the software process, and can be used by project managers when planning future projects. The study indicates that this type of simulation is a feasible way of modelling the process dynamically although the study calls for further investigations as to how project or process managers can benefit the most from using system dynamics simulations

- När användbarheten studeras av den information som presenteras i ett användargränssnitt på en datorskärm kan det framkomma vad som fungerar effektivt och korrekt. I sådana sammanhang förs sällan någon diskussion om hur den information som presenteras kommunicerar med en användare.Syftet med detta forskningsprojekt är att på ett generellt plan öka kunskapen om olika analytiska perspektiv för att studera den information som presenteras i ett användargränssnitt på en datorskärm, som ett led till att skapa begriplig information för människor. Mer preciserat är syftet att få en djupare förståelse för hur en informationslämnare kan kommunicera med en informationsanvändare genom den information som presenteras i ett användargränssnitt. Målet med forskningsprojektet är att presentera ett antal relevanta analytiska perspektiv som kan användas för att beskriva hur presenterad information i ett användargränssnitt kan kommunicera med en användare. Forskningsresultatet bidrar med ett ramverk som kan ligga till grund för ett analysstöd. Forskningsresultatet bidrar även med en ansats för framtida forskning inom området.Forskningsprojektet bygger på fyra fallstudier. Analysobjekten i fallstudierna utgörs av fyra olika användargränssnitt på datorskärm, vilka används inom olika myndigheter, organisationer och företag. Vartdera användargränssnittet och dess informationsdesign studeras med hänsyn till: informationslämnarnas önskemål och intentioner, informationsanvändarnas upplevelse och förståelse av information och kontexters påverkan.De slutsatser som dras är bland annat att informationsdesign i ett användargränssnitt på datorskärm upplevs och förstås av användare i samklang med inre, när och yttre kontext. Dessa kontexter kan studeras utifrån tre olika perspektiv, ett semiotiskt, ett retoriskt och ett narrativt perspektiv. En sådan analys kan framhäva den kommunikation som sker mellan de budskap som informationslämnaren vill berätta, hur den presenterade informationen i användargränssnittet arrangeras och komponeras och hur olika kontexter påverkar användarnas upplevelse och förståelse av den information som presenteras.

Verification and validation in industry - a qualitative survey on the state of practice

- Verification and validation activities take a substantial share of project budgets and need improvements. This is an accepted truth, but the current practices are seldom assessed and analyzed. In this paper we present a qualitative survey of the verification and validation processes at 11 Swedish companies. The purpose was to exchange experience between the companies and to lay out a foundation for further research on the topic. The survey is conducted through workshop and interview sessions, loosely guided by a questionnaire scheme. It is concluded from the survey that there are substantial differences between small and large companies. In large companies, the documented process is emphasized while in small companies, single key, persons have a dominating impact on the procedures. Large companies use commercial tools while small companies make in-house tools or use shareware. Common to all the surveyed companies is that verification and validation is considered important, and thus having rather high status. Information exchange between companies during the survey was considered to be very valuable to the involved subjects

- The article focuses on lifestyle entrepreneurship, characterised by a balancing work between personal lifestyle motives and economic motives. It builds on a qualitative study of business owners who have realized a life dream of starting a countryside business in the tourism and hospitality industry in Sweden. Through the notion of "balancing work", the analysis focuses on the tension between a personal life sphere and a market. In particular, the analysis highlights how the notion of "the life dream" emerges as a narrative practice of self-realization, simultaneously as it is offered as an experience product. The analysis demonstrates how the entrepreneurs balance between personal stories of togetherness and marketing practices, between images of right and wrong commodification, and between constraining working conditions and a popular image of the successful entrepreneur, reinforced by a political discourse on rural entrepreneurship. It is concluded that balancing work between personal identities and economic practices is a practice of valuation, offering new insights into working conditions and markets situated in the intersection between markets and personal life spheres.

Commodification of recreational hunting in Sweden : hunting tourism experiences as ‘peculiar goods’

- The paper is based on a study of hunting tourism enterprising in Sweden. The study examines how hunting tourism businesses in Sweden navigate in a complex social, economic and moral environment. The aim of the present paper is to identify how tensions between a market- oriented value sphere and a value sphere based on friendship- and community reciprocity are played out in hunting tourism entrepreneurship. In particular, the study focuses on the ambiguous character of the hunting experience product and the different narratives and discourses framing what is considered, by the actors themselves, to be a ‘good’ hunting tourism experience.
