  • Information Visualization : Human-Centered Issues and Perspectives
  • 2008
  • Bok (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • This book is the outcome of the Dagstuhl Seminar on "Information Visualization -- Human-Centered Issues in Visual Representation, Interaction, and Evaluation" held at Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, from May 28 to June 1, 2007.Information Visualization (InfoVis) is a relatively new research area, which focuses on the use of visualization techniques to help people understand and analyze data. This book documents and extends the findings and discussions of the various sessions in detail. The seven contributions cover the most important topics: There are general reflections on the value of information visualization; evaluating information visualizations; theoretical foundations of information visualization; teaching information visualization. And specific aspects on creation and collaboration: engaging new audiences for information visualization; process and pitfalls in writing information visualization research papers; and visual analytics: definition, process, and challenges.

  • A cloud-hosted MapReduce Architecture for syntactic parsing
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 45th Euromicro Conference on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications (SEAA). - Greece : IEEE. - 9781728134215 - 9781728132853 ; , s. 100-107
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Syntactic parsing is a time-consuming task in natural language processing particularly where a large number of text files are being processed. Parsing algorithms are conventionally designed to operate on a single machine in a sequential fashion and, as a consequence, fail to benefit from high performance and parallel computing resources available on the cloud. We designed and implemented a scalable cloud-based architecture supporting parallel and distributed syntactic parsing for large datasets. The main architecture consists of a syntactic parser (constituency and dependency parsing) and a MapReduce framework running on clusters of machines. The resulting cloud-based MapReduce parsing is able to build a map where syntactic trees of the same input file have the same key and collect into a single file containing sentences along with their corresponding trees. Our experimental evaluation shows that the architecture scales well with regard to number or processing nodes and number of cores per node. In the fastest tested cloud-based setup, the proposed design performs 7 times faster when compared to a local setup. In summary, this study takes an important step toward providing and evaluating a cloud-hosted solution for efficient syntactic parsing of natural language data sets consisting of a large number of files.

  • Det är något som inte stämmer - om analysen av utbrytningar (There is something wrong somewhere - on the analysis of it-clefts)
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Svenskans beskrivning 25. - 9512921758 ; , s. 272-283
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • There is something wrong somewhere– on the analysis of it-cleftsUlla Stroh-WollinThe focused constituent of an it-cleft is sometimes analysed as the antecedent of the following subordinate clause, just like the head noun to an ordinary relative clause. Such an analysis would make the internal structure of the sentences in (1a–b) identical, disregarding the lexical difference between the subjects (non-refrential in a, referential in b).(1) a. Det var Lisa som lånade cykeln. (Inte Anna.)’It was Lisa who borrowed the bike. (Not Anna.)’b. (Vem var det?) Det var Lisa som lånade cykeln.’(Who was that?) That was Lisa who borrowed the bike.’There are, however, formal grammatical differences between the two constructions, that might signal a deeper structural difference as well. (For example: whereas the antecedent of an ordinary relative clause with som ’who/which/that’ is generally nominal, the focused constituent of the cleft can have almost any categorial status.) This suspicion is supported by a semantic analysis of not only affirmative clefts, but also clefts involving a negation. In the latter case, see (2), it is not attractive to regard the focused element as the antecedent to the subordinate clause.(2) Det var inte Lisa som lånade cykeln.’It was not Lisa who borrowed the bike.’With exemples like (2), it is obvious that no constituent Lisa som lånade cykeln ’Lisa who borrowed the bike’ is really identified. Thus, Lisa should not be considered to be the antecedent of the subordinate clause. Formally, although not as obvious at first sight, this also applies to affirmative clefts like the one in (1a).

  • Automatic multi–organ segmentation using fast model based level set method and hierarchical shape priors
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the VISCERAL Organ Segmentation and Landmark Detection Challenge, co-located with IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI 2014), Beijing, China, May 1, 2014. - : CEUR-WS. ; , s. 25-31
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An automatic multi-organ segmentation pipeline is presented. The segmentation starts with stripping the body of skin and subcutaneous fat using threshold-based level-set methods. After registering the image to be processed against a standard subject picked from the training datasets, a series of model-based level set segmentation operations is carried out guided by hierarchical shape priors. The hierarchical shape priors are organized according to the anatomical hierarchy of the human body, starting with ventral cavity, and then divided into thoracic cavity and abdominopelvic cavity. The third level contains the individual organs such as liver, spleen and kidneys. The segmentation is performed in a top-down fashion, where major structures are segmented first, and their location information is then passed down to the lower level to initialize the segmentation, while boundary information from higher-level structures also constrains the segmentation of the lower-level structures. In our preliminary experiments, the proposed method yielded a Dice coeffcient around 90% for most major thoracic and abdominal organs in both contrastenhanced CT and non-enhanced datasets, while the average running time for segmenting ten organs was about 10 minutes.

  • Associations of WWC1 variants with Alzheimer?s disease and vascular dementia among rural older adults in China : A population-based study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Neurobiology of Aging. - : Elsevier BV. - 0197-4580 .- 1558-1497. ; 125, s. 109-114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We sought to examine the associations of common WWC1 variants with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) among rural-dwelling older adults in China. This population-based study used data from the baseline assessments (March –September 2018) of MIND-China. AD and VaD were diagnosed following the international criteria. Of the 5455 participants (age≥60 years, 57.27% women), 182 were diagnosed with AD and 88 with VaD. Logistic regression analysis suggested that WWC1 rs17070145 C allele (vs. T) was associated with multivariable-adjusted odds ratio of 1.23 (95% confidence interval 0.96–1.58) for AD, and that CC genotype (vs. TT) was associated with multivariable-adjusted odds ratio of 2.19(1.10–4.39) for VaD, but the association with VaD became non-significant when further adjusting for stroke history. Furthermore, exonic SNPs rs3822660 and rs3822659 were in strong linkage disequilibrium (LD) with rs17070145 (D’ = 0.88). These results suggest that the strong LD between rs17070145 and 2 exonic SNPs may explain the association of WWC1 rs17070145 C allele with AD and that stroke may partly explain the association of WWC1 rs17070145 CC genotype with VaD.
