  • Digital speckle-pattern interferometry: fringe retrieval for large in-plane deformations with digital speckle photography
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Applied Optics. - : Optical Society of America. - 1559-128X .- 2155-3165. ; 38:25, s. 5408-5412
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The compensation of large in-plane motions in digital speckle-pattern interferometry (DSPI) with the use of digital speckle photography (DSP) is demonstrated. Ordinary recordings of DSPI are recombined and analyzed with DSP. The DSP result is used to compensate for the bulk speckle motion prior to calculation of the phase map. This results in a high fringe contrast even for deformations of several speckle diameters. In addition, for the case of an in-plane deformation, it is shown that the absolute phase change in each pixel may be unwrapped by use of the DSP result as an initial guess. The principles of this method and experiments showing the in-plane rotation of a plate and the encounter of two rounded plates are presented

  • DeeDS : Towards a Distributed and Active Real-Time Database Systems
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: ACM Sigmod Record. ; 25:1, s. 38-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • DeeDS combines active database functionality with critical timing constraints and integrated system monitoring. Since the reactive database mechanisms, or rule management system, must meet critical deadlines, we must employ methods that make triggering of rules and execution of actions predictable. We will focus on the scheduling issues associated with dynamic scheduling of workloads where the triggered transactions have hard, firm or soft deadlines, and how transient overloads may be resolved by substituting transactions by computationally cheaper ones. The rationale for a loosely coupled general purpose event monitoring facility, that works in tight connection with the scheduler, is presented. For performance and predictability, the scheduler and event monitor are executing on a separate CPU from the rest of the system. Real-time database accesses in DeeDS are made predictable and efficient by employing methods such as main memory resident data, full replication, eventual consistency, and prevention of global deadlocks.

  • GW spectral functions of Gd and NiO
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B Condensed Matter. - : American Physical Society. - 0163-1829 .- 1095-3795. ; 54:8, s. 5353-5357
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The spectral functions of highly correlated systems Gd and NiO have been calculated within the GW approximation. In the case of Gd, satellites are found at the positions of the experimental main peaks. However, some quasiparticle weight remains at the local density eigenvalue but its weight is unusually small (0.3). In NiO, satellite structure is observed at around -10 eV when starting from the local density Hamiltonian. It is found, however, that the satellite intensity is reduced towards self-consistency and almost disappears. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

  • Multiple Plasmon Satellites in Na and Al Spectral Functions from Ab Initio Cumulant Expansion
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 77:11, s. 2268-2271
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The valence photoemission spectra of alkali metals exhibit multiple plasmon satellite structure. The calculated spectral functions within the GW approximation show only one plasmon satellite at too large binding energy. In this Letter we use the cumulant expansion approach to obtain the spectral functions of Na and Al from ab initio calculations including the effects of band structure. The GW spectral functions are dramatically improved and the positions of the multiple plasmon satellites are in very good agreement with experiment while their intensities cannot be explained from intrinsic effects only.

  • A comparative study of nurses' and elderly patients' ratings of pain and pain tolerance.
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Journal of gerontological nursing. - 0098-9134 .- 1938-243X. ; 25:5, s. 30-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to compare elderly patients' and nurses' ratings of pain and pain tolerance. Data were collected through structured interviews with the patients. The attending nurses completed a questionnaire after conducting a pain assessment. Independent of each other, patients and nurses were asked to rate on a VAS when pain should be treated (pain tolerance) and pain intensity. The VAS has been used both by patients and nurses. The initial selection consisted of 43 patients; however, 9% (n = 4) were unable to complete the VAS. These patients were not significantly older than those who completed the study (n = 39). The results shows that nurses tend to overestimate mild pain and underestimate severe pain. Nurses rated pain tolerance significantly lower than patients. The results also suggest that nurses with training beyond basic nursing education tend to assess patients' pain more accurately than those without additional training. For patients who reported that they had pain prior to hospitalization, the nurses' pain ratings showed a higher agreement than for those who reported that they did not have pain before being hospitalized. At the time of the interviews, 21% (n = 8) of patients felt that their pain was so great they needed treatment. Those patients also were recognized by the attending nurses as being in pain. To improve elderly patients' pain management, practicing nurses must collaborate with researchers to develop specific empirical research nursing knowledge within geriatric pain management. This research-based knowledge should be incorporated into nurses' clinical practice regarding pain management. Specific guidelines must be developed for the assessment, treatment, and documentation of elderly patients' pain.

  • Active Capability Support for Cooperation Strategies in Cooperative Information Systems
  • 1998
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • One important feature for the current and next generation of information systemsis the ability to be able tocooperate. Information systems that are able to cooperateare referred to as cooperative information systems. The problem of moving the stateof the art from information systems designed asislands of automationto cooperativeinformation systems has primarly been addressed by the distributed artificial intelli-gence community and the database community. For example, the distributed artificialintelligence community has investigated cooperation strategies such as task sharingand result sharing, whereas the database community has developed techniques forinteroperability over heterogenous databases. One characteristic of cooperative infor-mation systems is that no individual solution can satisfactorily support all requiredcharacteristics of cooperative information systems. This thesis takes the position thata synthesis of results from the distributedartificial intelligence community and thedatabase community is a promising direction for developing cooperative informationsystems. In this thesis, active capability (as defined within active databases) is considered asan important core technology for cooperative information systems. Active capabilityis supported by event condition action (ECA) rules with the following semantics:when an event E occurs, evaluate condition C, and if the condition is satisfied, thenexecute action A. The applicability of using ECA rules has primarly been exploredwithin database systems and has recently initiated ECA related research within otherresearch communities such as real-time and workflow. This thesis focuses on what is required in an interface between information sys-tems when using an active capability approach to supporting the major cooperationstrategies as formulated in distributed artificial intelligence. The significance of the2work reported in this thesis concerns two major issues. First, advanced types ofcooperation strategies such as task sharing and result sharing can now span the do-mains of database and distributed artificial intelligence architectures. Second, as thiswork synthesizes and extends results from two different research communities, it pro-vides a good foundation for using active capability as one of the core technologies forcooperative information systems.
