  • A Model for Determinants of Employees' Attraction and Retention in the Banking Industry of Tanzania : Employees' Perspective
  • 2009
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Since the liberalization of the economy in early 1980s, Tanzania has witnessed an increased labour mobility in its various sectors and industries of the economy including the banking industry. This situation has been partly contributed by the rapid growth of the private service sector. The rapid growth of the private sector in general and the banking industry in particular has been the response to the advice advanced by the World Bank (WB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) through the Structural Adjustment Programmes (SAPs); to facilitate the market oriented economy with less state intervention.  As a result a number of privately owned financial institutions have emerged. Similarly, the government privatized the formerly publicly owned banks. The cumulative impacts of this situation have been the increased demand for qualified employees in the banking industry and hence leading to fierce competition for highly qualified employees among the banking institutions. The major objective of this study was to develop a conceptual framework/ model for studying the determinants of employees’ attraction and retention in the banking industry of Tanzania. The developed conceptual framework was based on the review of various relevant theories, empirical studies and the empirical findings gathered from two case studies. The findings of this study revealed that there are three categories of determinants of employees´ attraction and retention in the banking industry which include; individual employee factors, organizational constructed factors and external critical business environment factors as depicted in figure 8-1 of this thesis.

  • Projektledning i korta projekt : Observationer av projektledares arbete i multiprojektmiljö
  • 2004
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • As most of the project management models were developed for larger projects, there is a lack of understanding of what project managers in short duration projects do. Short-duration projects are projects in multi-project environments lasting for a number of weeks rather than a number of months. Even if they are common today, short-duration projects have not yet attracted the interest of project researchers. The present study aims to analyze what the project managers in short duration projects do and to develop a method for studying the project managers at work.A theoretical framework is built on earlier studies of managers’ work, suggesting three areas having impact on the project manager’s work. The impacting areas are the project, the project manager’s experience, and the organizational context of the project. The project manager and the assisting project manager were studied while managing a sub-project in a greater telecom system project. The project managers were studied one week each using participant observation and interviews. The findings indicate that much of the time at work was spent in meetings of different kinds, to deal with change, and to guard the production teams from being disturbed by changes in the environment. It was also found that studying a multi-project environment from the sub-project’s perspective gives a different view on multi-project environments that have earlier been presented as the project managers in the short-duration project constantly have to adjust to changes, inputs and demands from the surrounding projects and functional organizations. In the end some proposals on directions for further studies of managers of short-duration projects are made.

  • Construction of Transnational Identities? : a study of how multiple international assignments influence individuals' identity processes
  • 2008
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This licentiate thesis examines multiple international assignments from an identity construction perspective, and identification or social identities as part thereof. A distinction is made between repeat expatriates, employed by the same company over several assignments abroad, and international itinerants, who move abroad working for several different companies. The main purpose of this thesis is to increase the understanding of how multiple international assignments influence individuals’ identity construction. This purpose is divided into two broad aspects where this thesis aims to contribute; the identity construction process as such, over multiple international assignments, and the more contextual aspect of social identities and what these individuals identify with. The thesis contains two essays, each with a different focus. The interviews in the first essay are with repeat expatriates and in the second essay international itinerants are in focus. As this is an exploratory study, a narrative approach is applied in order to reach in-depth understanding of a few cases. Brought together the essays contribute with new insights about the implications of multiple international work experiences from an individual’s point of view and illustrate the diversity of implications such a career can have for the individual. As these individuals go through transitions in their social context, experiencing ambiguities and paradoxes, they reflect on who they are and identity construction processes are engaged. This is contextualized in their narratives and they draw on different sources and contexts in their identity construction. Findings also indicate that there can actually be differences in repeat expatriates’ and international itinerants’ identity construction and what they identify with, which is identified as an interesting topic to research further.
