  • Translated Objects : The Olov Janse Case
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Museum Worlds. - : Berghahn Books. - 2049-6729 .- 2049-6737. ; 2:1, s. 42-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the movements of archaeological and ethnographic objects and museum collections connected with the Swedish-born archaeologist and ethnographer Olov R. T. Janse (1892–1985). Janse pursued a cosmopolitan career in the years between 1920 and 1960, in and between the national contexts of Sweden, France, Indochina, the Philippines, and the United States, where he found himself in different political contexts such as colonialism, nationalism, and the Cold War. He initiated object exchanges between French and Swedish museums, and he collected archaeological and ethnographic objects from Indochina and the Philippines for museums in Sweden, France, and the United States. The complexity of object movements in the wake of Olov Janse's career suggests that we should think and talk about object mobility in terms of translation rather than simple transmission. In seven sections, each exploring one chapter of Janse's life, we discuss how changes in world politics became entangled with changes in Janse's own position as an archaeologist and ethnographer, affecting the movements of objects and contributing to an active translation of their meaning.

  • Heritage and Borders
  • 2019
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This volume is the result of a two-day symposium held in Stockholm in 2017. In six papers a multidisciplinary group of scholars explore what happens, philosophically and in practice, when the two concepts and phenomena heritage and borders are combined. Borders are considered in the concrete forms of walls and buffer zones, as well as in the abstract sense of boundaries and demarcations. The conceptual relation between borders and heritage is discussed, and the idea that heritage is about construction borders – both material and mental – is highlighted with concrete examples from across the world. The texts present some of the complex discussions on heritage and borders that take place in various academic disciplines today. In a transcription of a joint conversation, key themes such as conflict, negotiation, the in-between, difference, nationalism, essentialization, memory and time are discussed.

  • Group B streptococcal carriage in Sweden : a national study on risk factors for mother and infant colonisation
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica. - Stockholm : Wiley. - 0001-6349 .- 1600-0412. ; 87:1, s. 50-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. To study group B streptococcus (GBS) colonisation in parturients and infants in relation to obstetric outcome and to define serotypes and antibiotic resistance in GBS isolates acquired. Methods. A population-based, national cohort of parturients and their infants was investigated. During 1 calendar week in 2005 all women giving birth (n=1,754) were requested to participate in the study. Results. A total of 1,569 mother/infant pairs with obstetric and bacteriological data were obtained. Maternal carriage rate was 25.4% (95% confidence interval (CI): 23.3-27.6). In GBS-positive mothers with vaginal delivery and no intrapartum antibiotics, the infant colonisation rate was 68%. Some 30% of infants were colonised after acute caesarean section, and 0% were colonised after an elective procedure. Duration of transport of maternal recto/vaginal swabs of more than 1 day impeded culture sensitivity. Infant mMales were more frequently colonised than females (76.9 versus 59.8%, odds ratio (OR): 2.16; 95% CI: 1.27-3.70), as were infants born after rupture of membranes ≥24 h (p =0.039). Gestational age, birth weight and duration of labor did not significantly influence infant colonisation. Some 30% of parturients with at least one risk factor for neonatal disease received intrapartum antibiotics. The most common GBS serotypes were type III and V. Some 5% of the isolates were resistant to clindamycin and erythromycin, respectively. Conclusions. Maternal GBS prevalence and infant transfer rate were high in Sweden. Males were more frequently colonised than females. The sensitivity of maternal cultures decreased with the duration of sample transport. Clindamycin resistance was scarce. The use of intrapartum antibiotics was limited in parturients with obstetric risk factors for early onset group B streptococcal disease.

  • Real-time PCR-assay in the delivery suite for determination of group B streptococcal colonization in a setting with risk-based antibiotic prophylaxis
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Maternal-Fetal & Neonatal Medicine. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1476-7058 .- 1476-4954. ; 27:4, s. 328-332
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP) reduces the incidence of neonatal early onset group B streptococcal infections. The present study investigated if an automated PCR-assay, used bedside by the labor ward personnel was manageable and could decrease the use of IAP in a setting with a risk-based IAP strategy. Methods: The study comprises two phases. Phase 1 was a multicenter, randomized, controlled trial. Women with selected risk-factors were allocated either to PCR-IAP (prophylaxis given if positive or indeterminate) or IAP. A vaginal/rectal swab and superficial swabs from the neonate for conventional culture were also obtained. Phase 2 was non-randomized, assessing an improved version of the assay. Results: Phase 1 included 112 women in the PCR-IAP group and 117 in the IAP group. Excluding indeterminate results, the assay showed a sensitivity of 89% and a specificity of 90%. In 44 % of the PCR assays the result was indeterminate. The use of IAP was lower in the PCR group (53 versus 92%). Phase 2 included 94 women. The proportion of indeterminate results was reduced (15%). The GBS colonization rate was 31%. Conclusion: The PCR assay, in the hands of labor ward personnel, can be useful for selection of women to which IAP should be offered.

  • Emergency peripartum hysterectomy: results from the prospective Nordic Obstetric Surveillance Study (NOSS)
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica. - : Wiley. - 1600-0412 .- 0001-6349. ; 94:7, s. 745-754
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To assess the prevalence and risk factors of emergency peripartum hysterectomy. Design:Nordic collaborative study. Population605362 deliveries across the five Nordic countries. Methods: We collected data prospectively from patients undergoing emergency peripartum hysterectomy within 7days of delivery from medical birth registers and hospital discharge registers. Control populations consisted of all other women delivering on the same units during the same time period. Main outcome measures: Emergency peripartum hysterectomy rate. Results: The total number of emergency peripartum hysterectomies reached 211, yielding an incidence rate of 3.5/10000 (95% confidence interval 3.0-4.0) births. Finland had the highest prevalence (5.1) and Norway the lowest (2.9). Primary indications included an abnormally invasive placenta (n=91, 43.1%), atonic bleeding (n=69, 32.7%), uterine rupture (n=31, 14.7%), other bleeding disorders (n=12, 5.7%), and other indications (n=8, 3.8%). The delivery mode was cesarean section in nearly 80% of cases. Previous cesarean section was reported in 45% of women. Both preterm and post-term birth increased the risk for emergency peripartum hysterectomy. The number of stillbirths was substantially high (70/1000), but the case fatality rate stood at 0.47% (one death, maternal mortality rate 0.17/100000 deliveries). Conclusions: A combination of prospective data collected from clinicians and information gathered from register-based databases can yield valuable data, improving the registration accuracy for rare, near-miss cases. However, proper and uniform clinical guidelines for the use of well-defined international diagnostic codes are still needed.

  • Associations between antenatal and perinatal risk factors and cerebral palsy : a Swedish cohort study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: BMJ Open. - : BMJ. - 2044-6055. ; 10:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: To investigate known and suggested risk factors associated with cerebral palsy in a Swedish birth cohort, stratified by gestational age. SETTING: Information on all births between 1995 and 2014 in Skåne, the southernmost region in Sweden, was extracted from the national birth register. PARTICIPANTS: The cohort comprised a total of 215 217 children. Information on confirmed cerebral palsy and subtype was collected from the national quality register for cerebral palsy (Cerebral Palsy Follow-up Surveillance Programme). PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: We calculated the prevalence of risk factors suggested to be associated with cerebral palsy and used logistic regression models to investigate the associations between potential risk factors and cerebral palsy. All analyses were stratified by gestational age; term (≥37 weeks), moderately or late preterm (32-36 weeks) and very preterm (<32 weeks). RESULTS: In all, 381 (0.2 %) children were assigned a cerebral palsy diagnosis. Among term children, maternal preobesity/obesity, small for gestational age, malformations, induction, elective and emergency caesarian section, Apgar <7 at 5 min and admission to neonatal care were significantly associated with cerebral palsy (all p values<0.05). Among children born moderately or late preterm, small for gestational age, malformations, elective and emergency caesarian section and admission to neonatal care were all associated with cerebral palsy (all p values <0.05), whereas among children born very preterm no factors were significantly associated with the outcome (all p values>0.05). CONCLUSION: Our results support and strengthen previous findings on factors associated with cerebral palsy. The complete lack of significant associations among children born very preterm probably depends on to the small number of children with cerebral palsy in this group.

  • A Cosmopolitan History of Archaeology : The Olov Janse Case
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the History of Archaeology. - : Ubiquity Press, Ltd.. - 1062-4740 .- 2047-6930. ; 24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The life of international archaeologist Olov Janse (1892–1985) demonstrates the complexity of personal identify formation. Janse worked in Europe, Scandinavia, South East Asia and North America, spoke many different languages, controlled many collections of artefacts, changed identity or character at least five times, and nationality, three times. It is hoped the themes, elucidated through Janse’s story, will encourage comparisons with, and analyses of, the careers of other cosmopolitan archaeologists, and instigate an international history of archaeology focused on mobility, translation and networks, rather than one based on the impact of archaeology on the development of nation-states.A correction article relating to the abstract and author affiliation of this publication can be found here: http://dx.doi.org/10.5334/bha.248

  • A Hobbling Marriage : On the relationship between the collections and the societal mission of the Museum of National Antiquities in Stockholm
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Current Swedish Archaeology. - : Svenska Arkeologiska Samfundet. - 1102-7355. ; 17, s. 149-162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the late 19th century, the new Museum of National Antiquities in Stockholm was a cutting-edge institution for the presentation of ideas of a universal human development from primitive to modern – ideas that were at the heart of the European colonial project. We argue that the archaeological collections with their unaltered 19th-century structures still represent a narrative that reproduces a colonial understanding of the world, a linear arrangement of essential cultural groups according to a teleological development model. Contrary to this, the contemporary mission of the Museum, inspired by the late 20th-century postcolonial thinking, is directed towards questioning this particular narrative. This problematic relationship is thus present deep within the structure of the Museum of National Antiquities as an institution, and it points to the need for long-term strategic changes to make the collections useful for vital museum activity in accordance with the Museum’s mission.
