  • Risk factors for surgically treated cervical spondylosis in male construction workers: a 20-year prospective study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The spine journal. - : Elsevier. - 1529-9430 .- 1878-1632. ; 23:1, s. 136-145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background ContextDegenerative changes due to cervical spondylosis (CS) can detrimentally affect work ability and quality of life yet understanding of how physical exposure affects disease progression is limited.PurposeTo assess the associations between occupational physical exposures and occurrence of surgically treated cervical spondylosis (ST-CS) and early exit from the labour market via disability pension.Study Design/SettingProspective register study with 20 year follow-up period.Patient SampleSwedish construction workers participating in a national health surveillance project conducted between 1971-1993.Outcome MeasuresSurgically treated cervical spondylosis (ST-CS) and early labour market exit at a minimum rate of 25% time on disability pension.MethodsAssociations between occupational physical exposures (job exposure matrix) and subsequent ST-CS (National Hospital in-patient register) and early labour market exit via disability pension (Swedish Social Insurance Agency register) were assessed in a cohort of male construction workers (n=237,699).ResultsA total of 1381 ST-CS cases were present and a 20-year incidence rate of 35.1 cases per 100,000 person years (95% confidence interval (CI) 33.2-36.9). Increased relative risk (RR) for ST-CS was found for workers exposed to non-neutral (RR 1.40, 95% CI 1.15-1.69) and awkward neck postures (1.52, 1.19-1.95), working with the hands above shoulder height (1.30, 1.06-1.60), and high upper extremity loading (1.35, 1.15-1.59). Increased risk was also present for workers who reported frequent neck (3.06, 2.18-4.30) and upper back (3.84, 2.57-5.73) pain in the 12 months prior to survey. Among workers with elevated arm exposure, higher risk was seen in those who also had more frequent neck pain. ST-CS cases took early retirement more often (41.3%) and at a younger age (53 years) than the total study cohort (14.8% and 56 years of age, respectively).ConclusionsOccupational exposure to non-neutral neck postures, work with hands above shoulders and high loads born through the upper extremities increased the risk for ST-CS and early retirement due to disability. Decreasing postural and load exposure is salient for primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of CS. Neck pain was shown to be a prognostic factor for ST-CS, which stresses the importance of acting early and taking preventative action to reduce workplace exposure, and the need for systematic medical check-ups within primary or occupational care to mitigate disease progression and early labour market exit due to disability.

  • Victim Offender Mediation in Sweden : An Activity Falling Apart?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nordic Mediation Research. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319730189 - 9783319730196 ; , s. 67-79
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, the government has invested considerable resources to implement victim offender mediation (VOM) for young people (under the age of 21). Despite this, the number of mediations is decreasing. What appears to be a gap between the legislator’s intentions and practical applications raises questions about the reasons for this gap and the premises for mediation in penal matters in Sweden today. Our purpose in this article is to highlight and discuss some circumstances that can explain this decrease and the future of VOM in Sweden. We start by discussing the development of VOM in Sweden and continue by analysing possible reasons for why mediation is declining. The conclusion is that the decrease can be explained by problems related to legal and organisational structures as well as mediation practice. The conclusion is also that if the state and municipalities do not show more interest in VOM and restorative justice, then this activity will probably disappear.

  • Victim-offender mediation in Sweden : Is the victim better off?
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Review of Victimology. - : Sage Publications. - 0269-7580 .- 2047-9433. ; 18:3, s. 229-250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we analyse recorded verbal interactions between victims and offenders in the presence of mediators. Our aim is to illuminate how victims interact, communicate and position themselves in relation to the offender. We inquire whether victims benefit from verbal interaction with offenders during a process of mediation. According to this study there are no easy answers. Victims act in diverse ways depending on their aims and the situation. They may act as moral entrepreneurs, adopt consensus-seeking strategies or take oppositional positions. This research may be informative for those who are interested in which benefits victims can achieve when they communicate with offenders in the framework of restorative justice.

  • Ingår i: Postdigital Science and Education. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2524-485X .- 2524-4868. ; 4:3, s. 877-1015
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • On 17 March 2020, Postdigital Science and Education launched a call for testimonies about teaching and learning during very frst Covid-19 lockdowns. The resulting article, ‘Teaching in the Age of Covid-19’ (attached), presents 81 written testimonies and 80 workspace photographs submitted by 84 authors from 19 countries. On 17 March 2021, Postdigital Science and Education launched a call for a sequel article of testimonies about teaching and learning during very first Covid-19 lockdowns. The resulting article, ‘Teaching in the Age of Covid-19—1 Year Later’(attached), consists of 74 textual testimonies and 76 workspace photographs submitted by 77 authors from 20 countries. These two articles have been downloaded almost 100,000 times and have been cited more than 100 times. This shows their value as historical documents. Recent analyses, such as ‘Teaching in the Age of Covid-19—A Longitudinal Study ’(attached), also indicate their strong potential for educational research. As the Covid-19 pandemic seems to wind down, pandemic experiences have entered the mainstream. They shape all educational research of today and arguably do not require special treatment. Yet, our unique series of pandemic testimonies provides a unique opportunity to longitudinally trace what happens to the same people over the years—and this opportunity should not be missed.Today, we launch a call for fnal sequel: Teaching in the Age of Covid-19—The New Normal. In this sequel, we would like to hear about ways in which you—contributors to the previous articles—have established your own new normal. We hope that this will be the last iteration in this series of testimony articles. Unless the world faces another strong pandemic outburst, we would like to end the series with this last article.

  • Improving The Learning Environment In Physical Education : A Systematic Review Focusing On Students Who Meet Difficulties In Social Interaction
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Quality partnerships in Adapted Physical Activity. - Jyväskylä, Finland : University of Jyväskylä. - 9789513987343 ; , s. 53-53
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this systematic review, we present results of how teachers can create better conditions for students, with or without disabilities affecting social interaction, who meet challenges with social interactions. We aim to answer the research question: How can teaching physical education be designed so that students who experience difficulties with social interaction are provided with good conditions for participation, development, and learning? Quantitative and qualitative studies published between 2000 and 2019 were included in the search. Of 8079 studies, 11 studies fulfilled the Swedish Institute for Educational Research and the National Agency’s relevance and quality assessment checklist. The studies included interviews, observations, interventions, or surveys. The students were from first year in primary school up to last year in high school. The results were divided into three themes of importance for improving the learning environment in physical education 1) the importance of trusting relationships, 2) providing structure and support 3) creating a positive learning climate. The first theme describes the importance of relationships. Student experienced that teachers who acknowledge all students' experiences and were attentive to their opinions could strengthen the relationships. When the solidarity between students in the classroom was strong, students felt they were part of the group, which contributed to the learning environment. The second theme describes the importance of providing structure in the form of good and clear planning, explanations, and varied opportunities for students to perform a task. Students requested increased predictability of the lesson provided them with a feeling of control. The third theme emphasises the importance of increasing students’ self-efficacy e.g., students experiences of competence and their belief in their ability for a more stimulating learning environment. The results indicates that creating an atmosphere that is not too performance oriented is eligible. When physical education becomes a learning opportunity rather than a measurement, it contribute to increased participation. A specific teaching method, autonomy-supported teaching, was emphasized in some of the studies to have social-relational benefits. This type of teaching includes attentive listening, taking students’ perspective, creating opportunities to give feedback on teaching and providing enough time to complete different tasks. Ensuring a learning environment for all students in physical education, regardless of ability, experience, and knowledge, is not a responsibility for teachers alone, it concerns and involves all levels in the school organization. The management, principals, legal guardians, teachers, and students need to work together.

  • Development of motor imagery in school-aged children with autism spectrum disorder : a longitudinal study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Brain Sciences. - : MDPI. - 2076-3425. ; 12:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a diagnosis based on social communication deficits and prevalence of repetitive stereotyped behaviors, but sensorimotor disturbances are commonly exhibited. This longitudinal study aimed at exploring the development of the ability to form mental motor representations (motor imagery; MI) in 14 children with ASD and 17 typically developing (TD) children at 7, 8 and 9 years of age. MI was investigated using a hand laterality paradigm from which response times (RT) and error rates were extracted and compared with performance on a visually based mental rotation task (VI). A criterion task was used to ensure that the children could perform the task. The results showed wide performance variability in the ASD group with more failures than TD in the MI criterion task, especially at 7 years. For all age levels and both the MI and VI tasks, the error rates were significantly higher and RTs longer for the ASD group compared with TD. Signs of MI strategies were however noted in the ASD group as biomechanically constrained orientations had longer RTs than less constrained orientations, a RT pattern that differed from the VI task. The presence of MI in the ASD group was most evident at 9 years, but the error rates remained high at all ages, both in the MI and VI task. In comparison, the TD group showed stable MI strategies at all ages. These findings indicate that MI ability is delayed and/or impaired in children with ASD which may be related to difficulties performing required mental rotations.
