  • Allmän rösträtt? Rösträttens begränsningar i Sverige efter 1921
  • 2021
  • Editorial collection (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • 2004
  • Editorial collection (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • 2023
  • In: Nordisk socialrättslig tidskrift. - : Stockholms universitet. - 2000-6500. ; :2023 35-36, s. 7-38
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In Sweden, the recent debate on youth crime has focused on strengthening repressive measures. At the same time, government work is underway to strengthen children’s rights. Young people who are placed for the purpose of care in secure youth care (locked institutions) are placed at the intersection of these two trends. Starting from a critical children’s rights perspective, we explore how young people understand rights in a secure care environment and discuss how these understandings relates to central principals, laws and conventions. We start from the concrete situations and contexts in which rights are to be realized in order to contribute to a better understanding of the importance of rights in a secure care environment. The empirical data consists of 15 youth interviews, at four institutions. Three understandings of rights are identified; rights as tokens where rights are seen as something symbolic and without meaning, rights as self-responsibility where rights are seen as conditional on the young people’s actions and, rights as fundamental value where rights are understood as respect for one’s own and others’ human dignity, regardless of their actions. The three understandings of rights can be linked to different care contexts and to the relationship between staff and young people. Taken together, the young people’s understandings highlight the importance of basic principles of dignity and respect on equal terms, as well as the right of children deprived of their liberty to be helped to reintegrate into society. Implications for the operation of secure youth care are highlighted.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In recent years, several Swedish companies have been accused in the media, by NGOs, and via legal proceedings of engaging in criminal activities. Two of these companies, TeliaSonera and Lundin Petroleum have been the focus of substantial public attention. During the years following the revelations that TeliaSonera, a partly state owned telecommunications company, had committed bribery offences in Central Asia, the affair went from a public scandal in Sweden to a legal process in Sweden and abroad. Lundin Petroleum, a family owned oil company accused of participating in crimes against humanity in Sudan, has continuously denied the accusation by using a variety of denials and neutralizations. The current paper analyzes the strategies employed by these two businesses when defending themselves against allegations of criminal acts. Drawing on Stanley Cohen’s (2009) theoretical work on processes of denial and neutralization techniques, we have identified four main techniques used by the two companies to deflect allegations of criminal wrongdoing: literal denial; denial of knowledge; condemning the condemners; and appealing to a higher loyalty. In addition, we identify how the corporations emphasise their “Nordic values” by linking into a post-colonial discourse and justify their behaviour by relativising it. The article contributes to the discussion of neutralization strategies by pointing out the importance of the context in which a defence takes place.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In 1985 the County Administrative Boardof Jämtland initiated a process to protect Storsjöodjuret (the Great Lake Monster). Asother famous cryptids, the Monster has become a valuable resource in the process of cultural heritage, marketing and tourism. We apply Bateson’s theories of play (1972) and Goffman’s concept of frame (1974) to show how play offers a metacommunicative strategy to circumvent expressions of disbelief in a locally important folkloristic phenomenon. We ask what reactions the board’s invitation to play are met with, and how the case’szoological, cultural and juridical frames are negotiated. The process is analysed with respect to the different actors’ relation to genres and keys. The playful process in 1985 is contrasted by the judicial intervention in 2002 by the parliamentary ombudsman by whom humour and play are not deemed acceptable communicative strategies. We understand this in terms of closeness, and find that closeness to Storsjöodjuret is a direct factor both to the complexity of suitable communicative strategy, as well as to the creation of the protective decision made as such.

  • Large-scale identification of protein histidine methylation in human cells
  • 2021
  • In: NAR Genomics and Bioinformatics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2631-9268. ; 3:2
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Methylation can occur on histidine, lysine and arginine residues in proteins and often serves a regulatory function. Histidine methylation has recently attracted attention through the discovery of the human histidine methyltransferase enzymes SETD3 and METTL9. There are currently no methods to enrich histidine methylated peptides for mass spectrometry analysis and large-scale studies of the modification are hitherto absent. Here, we query ultra-comprehensive human proteome datasets to generate a resource of histidine methylation sites. In HeLa cells alone, we report 299 histidine methylation sites as well as 895 lysine methylation events. We use this resource to explore the frequency, localization, targeted domains, protein types and sequence requirements of histidine methylation and benchmark all analyses to methylation events on lysine and arginine. Our results demonstrate that histidine methylation is widespread in human cells and tissues and that the modification is over-represented in regions of mono-spaced histidine repeats. We also report colocalization of the modification with functionally important phosphorylation sites and disease associated mutations to identify regions of likely regulatory and functional importance. Taken together, we here report a system level analysis of human histidine methylation and our results represent a comprehensive resource enabling targeted studies of individual histidine methylation events.
