Combining industrial buyer and seller strategies for international supply and marketing management

- Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to review international industrial purchasing and marketing literature with a focus on portfolio models, to develop portfolio models for buyers' and sellers' international strategies, and to combine the models so that both the buyer and seller perspectives are dealt with simultaneously. Design/methodology/approach: Literature on international industrial purchasing and marketing is discussed. Dimensions that are important for the buyers' and sellers' strategies are identified. Portfolio models for buyers and sellers are developed and the two perspectives are matched together. Findings: The paper contributes a specification of features that are important for industrial buyers' and sellers' international purchasing and marketing strategies. These dimensions are used to develop a model of supplier relationship management and a marketing management model for supplier strategies. The consequences for the firm's international activities are discussed. A model combining industrial buyers' and sellers' international supply and marketing management strategies is developed. Research limitations/implications: This paper provides a deeper understanding of international exchange processes by combining literature on international industrial purchasing and international marketing. Situations are identified where different areas of theory are applicable. The paper also contributes to the discussion on what should be the conceptual domain of international business. Here, it is argued that international exchange is the product of joint decisions made by two or more actors based in different countries. Earlier academic literature reveals a striking imbalance: while one side of the coin - the exporter side - has been extensively studied, the importer side has largely been neglected. In this paper, it is tried to present a balanced view of both sides. Practical implications: This paper introduces portfolio management models that can be used for both industrial purchasing and marketing management. The paper stresses the importance of finding a fit between the marketing and purchasing strategies within a relationship. If both parties have positioned the relationship in a similar way, there are much greater possibilities for the relationship to create value for both parties. - In recent years, the local government sector in European countries has undergone important changes involving, among other things, the externalisation of local public service provision through various forms of corporatisation, public-public collaboration, public-private partnerships and contracting out. An important consequence of these institutional changes has been the recasting of local governance systems through the need for increased cooperation between public and private actors. This article addresses these matters with comparative reference to the experience in Italy and Sweden. In doing so, it considers local governments in their constitutional and legal contexts, leading to more detailed discussions of their externalisation initiatives and resultant organisational forms and governance arrangements. Issues of ownership have been important concerning the significance of 'community' and 'place' in the management of public affairs. © 2010 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

What explains variation in voluntary disclosure? : A study of the annual reports of corporations listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange

- The demand for information and transparency from listed corporations has recently increased. In spite of an increased demand for mandatory disclosures from regulators, corporations choose to voluntarily disclose additional information in order to satisfy demands from the capital market. However, the extent and content of information in those voluntary disclosures vary across corporations. The aim of this study is to explain the variation in the content of information in voluntary disclosures by listed corporations. The analyses are based on data collected from 431 annual reports from corporations listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange during the years 2002 and 2005. The findings support explanations from agency theory and positive accounting theory that size and the debt ratio are positively correlated with the content of information in voluntary disclosures. Corporations with a high share of management ownership disclosed less information than corporations with a low share of management ownership. The study also shows that variations in voluntary disclosures can be explained by factors derived from institutional theory and ’international capital market pressures’. The results indicate that foreign ownership and international listing to some extent have a positive effect on the content of information in voluntary disclosures. Industry was another factor that had a significant influence on voluntary disclosures. One important finding is that regulation to some extent can stimulate voluntary disclosures; our results did not indicate an ’unintended chilling effect’ due to too much regulation. In general, the corporations disclosed more voluntary information after the introduction of IFRS. © 2009 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

- Encompassing 40 years of immigrant life in Britain, Sandhya Suri’s filmic essay I for India (2005) is a collage of amateur home movies, British newsreels as well as film stock shot by the director herself. The home movie footage was filmed by Suri’s father who came to Britain as an immigrant doctor in the 1960s and who exchanged super8-films andaudio reels as cine-letters about his new life with his family in India. After having rediscovered the material on the attic of her family home, Sandhya Suri transformed it into her graduate thesis film at the The National Film and Television School in London. Dealing with memory, nostalgia and migrant experiences in Britain, I for India establishes a counter-history to the hegemonic national discourse in which migrant experiences are marginalized, objectified or rendered invisible.My paper is going to examine the role of the amateur footage for reflecting on the ontology of the image and the materiality of the different film formats. How does the reception of the footage change in the course of its dissemination? In what way does the filmic montage in I for India contribute to challenging the dominant media discourse on Asians in Britain? I would like to argue that the amateur footage helps to counter the ethnographic, Eurocentric gaze on the new citizens and subverts the hegemonic use of images of migrants as a means of control and classification (Alan Sekula) or as a weapon (Susan Sontag). How do the amateur images migrate into the collective (national) visual archive? Finally, the example of I for India might also show that Zygmunt Bauman’s binary opposition between tourists and nomads needs to be complicated.

- This paper explores contemporary art practice in Hamburg as a way to counter current trends of regeneration in different areas of the city. While officials promote the concept of “the growing city”, artists have employed various strategies of resistance.For a couple of years now, artists, urban anthropologists or filmmakers have been mapping the city from different perspectives (urban, audio, post-colonial). The paper presents the case study of an artistic intervention organised by the independent radio station FSK collaborating with a dozen artists and researchers in a workshop. In a “futurist search for traces” a mapping of disappearing city sounds forms the first part of the project. In a second step these soundfiles are archived on the website of radio aporee (http://aporee.org/maps/). Here the sites and sounds can be accessed by GPS-enabled mobile devices. Aporee thus forms an expanding archive which enables us to trace changes in urban space, e.g. in the course of gentrification. The paper analyses the politics of disappearance as a counter strategy and critically examines archival practices to rescue oppositional experiences.

- Departing from the opening scene of Roy Andersson’s 1991 short Härlig är jorden/World of Glory, the article gives an overview of the director’s political aesthetics outlined in his book Vår tids rädsla för allvar. Through the use of static long shots, stylization and the condensation of time and space Andersson attempts to activate reflection upon existential questions such as solidarity and the individual’s responsibility. In this scene from World of Glory Andersson links these ideas with a critique of Swedish passivity during the Holocaust.

- Municipal corporations can be seen as a method of disintegrating municipal operations, but retaining control through those corporations. We assume that the municipal influence of the corporation can be described through the concept of governance strategy. Through a case study of seven corporations in one Swedish municipality, we found that emphasis was put on corporate strategy as a governance mechanism and that the board only retained a latent capacity. Furthermore, financial control and executive compensation were hardly ever used as governance mechanisms, which led us to formulate the ’chamber concert’ hypothesis: the use of governance mechanisms is influenced by traditions, norms, knowledge and governance needs. - The right to interpretation service in Sweden is currently regulated under the Code of Judicial Procedure, the Administrative Procedures Act, and the State Officials Act.Interpreter service in courts is a right according to the Code of Judicial Procedure. The State Officials Act regulates administrative authorities and states that a public authority should use an interpreter ‘when needed’. This formulation does not imply a right as in the Code of Judicial Procedure as “when needed” gives the right to decide whether an interpreter is called in or not, to the public service provider.In this paper our starting point is the fieldwork done within a research project called Behind closed doors – The significance of community interpreting for guaranteeing legal security and for integration; with special focus on the reception of unaccompanied children and the processing of their asylum cases. As the title of this project suggests it is the act of community interpreting that is our main research object but with the special purpose to study community interpreting within the field of reception and processing of asylum cases of separated children.The interpreter is involved in many different areas and meetings - with the Migration Board, the health system, at school, in dialogue with social workers, the legal guardian etc. We will describe and analyze the everyday handlings, routines and norms within the reception of separated children and the processing of their asylum cases through the eye of the interpreter. We will also problematize the impact of community interpreting from the perspective of separated children, as individuals depending on interpretation to be able to communicate and to obtain rights (legal and human, specified in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child).
