  • Real-Time Subsystem Integration in the Presence of Shared Resources
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Work-In-Progress (WIP) session of the 27th IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium (RTSS'06), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present our ongoing work to support the difficult, time consuming, and error-prone process of subsystem integration in the real-time domain. Our work will result in methods where independently developed subsystems, including both hard real-time and soft real-time functions, can be easily integrated without resulting unpredictable timing behaviour. The methods will also facilitate subsystem reuse, since a subsystem can easily be integrated in a new environment. Related research and methods are presented, together with our ongoing work in the area.

  • Towards stochastic response-time of hierarchically scheduled real-time tasks
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: IEEE Symposium on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation, ETFA. - 1424406811 ; , s. 453-456
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The growing need for providing real-time system designers with less pessimistic results than the ones given by traditional worst-case analysis motivates several recent works on stochastic analysis methods. This paper deals with the calculation of stochastic Response Time Profiles of tasks that are hierarchically scheduled using server-based techniques in a stochastic analysis framework. Depending on how tasks are scheduled within the server, differences in temporal performance are expected. In the paper, initial results on calculating the Response Time Profiles for these server-scheduled tasks are outlined.

  • Towards a robust real-time wireless link in a land monitoring application
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: IEEE Symposium on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation, ETFA. - 1424406811 ; , s. 449-452
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses on-going work on providing a model of a robust real-time wireless link intended to be used to connect a mobile platform to a ground station in a land monitoring system. This work is part of a project where the mobile platform is an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), equipped with embedded devices which acquire and process sensor data to be sent to the ground station. Firstly, a temporal model of the communications link relying on radio modems is developed. Secondly, measurements have been made in order to determine packet loss probability. These two results are currently used to provide a robust real-time model of the wireless communications link.

  • Integration of networked subsystems in a resource constrained environment
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 11th IEEE International Conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation (ETFA'06), Prague, Czech Republic. - 9781424406814 ; , s. 905-912
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When developing embedded systems, there is currently a trend to move from a traditional federated approach, where computer systems are developed for their own dedicated hardware architecture, to an integrated approach, where computer systems are encapsulated as subsystems and later integrated on a shared hardware architecture. The task of integrating subsystems is complex, and in resource constrained systems efficient techniques and methods are required. In this paper the issue of subsystem integration is thoroughly discussed, and it is shown how to use Server-CAN, a network scheduler for the Controller Area Network, in the context of subsystem integration. As the network is a resource shared by all subsystems in adistributed architecture, its role in the integration process is particularly important. Here, the usage of an efficient and flexible network scheduler is essential.

  • Share-Driven Scheduling of Embedded Networks
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Many products are built from more or less independently developed subsystems. For instance, a car consists of subsystems for transmission, braking, suspension, etc. These subsystems are frequently controlled by an embedded computer system. In the automotive industry, as well as in other application domains, there is currently a trend from an approach where subsystems have dedicated computer hardware and other resources (a federated approach) to an approach where subsystems share hardware and other resources (an integrated approach). This is motivated by a strong pressure to reduce product cost, at the same time as an increasing number of subsystems are being introduced. When integrating subsystems, it is desirable that guarantees valid before integration are also valid after integration, since this would eliminate the need for costly reverifications. The computer network is a resource that is typically shared among all subsystems. Hence, a central issue when integrating subsystems is to provide an efficient scheduling of message transmissions on the network. There are essentially three families of schedulers that can be used: priority-driven schedulers that assign priorities to messages, time-driven schedulers that assign specific time-slots for transmission of specific messages, and share-driven schedulers that assign shares of the available network capacity to groups of messages. This thesis presents a framework for share-driven scheduling, to be implemented and used in embedded networks, with the aim to facilitate subsystem integration by reducing the risk of interference between subsystems. The framework is applied in the automotive domain. The initial parts of the thesis give an overview of systems, subsystems and network technologies found and used in the automotive domain. Then, the share-driven scheduling framework is presented, analytically investigated and proven, as well as evaluated in a simulation study. Finally it is shown how the framework is to be configured and used in the context of subsystem integration. The results show that the framework allows for flexible and efficient scheduling of messages with real-time constraints, facilitating integration of subsystems from a network point of view.

  • Handling Subsystems using the SaveComp Component Technology
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Workshop on Models and Analysis for Automotive Systems (WMAAS'06).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents a component technology (SaveCCT) suitable for the development of embedded vehicular control-system software. To satisfy the requirements in the vehicular domain, SaveCCT is designed to allow analysis and verification during the entire software development process. We give an overview of SaveCCT and its associated component model SaveCCM, together with an outline of how the framework intends to support the integration of larger -- possibly independently developed -- subsystems into a complete vehicle control system.
