  • Fiberbanks as substrate and feedstock for biological remediation : A practical analytical method development for organic pollutants analysis
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Book of Abstracts. - : ABA Publishing. - 9789189081031
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fiberbanksfrom the pulp and paper industry are typically contaminated with a wide range ofchlorinated aromatic and aliphatic toxins such as HCB and other chlorinated benzenes, PCB,HCH, DDT, PCDD, PCDF and Chlorophenols. This poses a formidable challenge for theanalyst to develop appropriate analytical methodology for the monitoring of the progress ofremediation. In preparation to this undertaking, an examination of a practical analytical method using oneextraction method, one clean-up and one analysis method for the aforementioned targetcompounds found in the fibrous sediment. This method was performed using acceleratedsolvent extraction (ASE), a modified silica gel column and GC-FID/ECD. Additionally,an assessment of the levels of organic pollutants was conducted, with the purposeofmeasuringthe potential alteration in contaminantswhenfreeze-drying, air-drying andautoclavingpretreatments are applied to the sediment samples, prior to be used as a media forbiological remediation. The results showed that the ASE is a very fast and reliable method of extraction, with yieldscomparableorhigher than the reference Soxhlet extraction method. Theactivatedsilica gelcolumn demonstrated adequate purification of the sediment extract for analysisusingthe twodetectors, FID and ECD, whichwere able to identify the target analytes fromonlyone purifiedextract. The method employed in this study has the potentialto reduceboth processing timeand materialusedfor analytical sample preparation. Lastly, some modifications inconcentrations anddistribution of target analyteswere revealedin thesediments pre-treated byautoclave and air-driedwhencompared withthefreeze-dried sediments, which can helpunderstanding the development of the biological remediation process.

  • IGSCC DISPOSITION CURVES FOR ALLOY 82 IN BWR NORMAL WATER CHEMISTRY
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: 13th International Conference on Environmental Degradation of Materials in Nuclear Power Systems. - 9781605600598 - 9781605600598 ; , s. 1353-1363
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In many nuclear power plants, areas of susceptible material in the reactor systems are replaced or mitigated. Many of the areas where the nickel-based weld metal Alloy 182 have been used, are not replaceable but need to be mitigated. One possibility to mitigate is to make known susceptible material non-accessible for the reactor coolant water by covering it with less susceptible materials. One such possibility that has been utilized frequently in the Swedish Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) fleet is in-lay welding of butt welds in the main circulation and feed water loops with the less susceptible Alloy 82, which has fewer reported failure cases under these conditions. The study focuses on the development of a Factor of Improvement between Alloy 182 and the replacement, Alloy 82 material. As part of this, a disposition curve under conditions relevant for Normal Water Chemistry, NWC, in the Swedish BWRs is presented.

  • Estimating density from presence/absence data in clustered populations
  • 2021
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • 1. Inventories of plant populations are fundamental in ecological research and monitoring, butsuch surveys are often prone to field assessment errors. Presence/ absence (P/A) samplingmay have advantages over plant cover assessments for reducing such errors. However, thelinking between P/A data and plant density depends on model assumptions for plant spatialdistributions. Previous studies have shown, for example, how that plant density can beestimated under Poisson model assumptions on the plant locations. In this study, newmethods are developed and evaluated for linking P/A data with plant density assuming thatplants occur in clustered spatial patterns.2. New theory was derived for estimating plant density under Neyman–Scott-type cluster models such as the Matérn and Thomas cluster processes. Suggested estimators, correspondingconfidence intervals and a proposed goodness-of-fit test were evaluated in a Monte Carlosimulation study assuming a Matérn cluster process. Furthermore, the estimators were applied to plant data from environmental monitoring in Sweden to demonstrate their empiricalapplication.3. The simulation study showed that our methods work well for large enough sample sizes. The judgment of what is ’large enough’ is often difficult, but simulations indicate that asample size is large enough when the sampling distributions of the parameter estimators aresymmetric or mildly skewed. Bootstrap may be used to check whether this is true. Theempirical results suggest that the derived methodology may be useful for estimating densityof plants such as Leucanthemum vulgare and Scorzonera humilis.4. By developing estimators of plant density from P/A data under realistic model assumptions about plants’ spatial distributions, P/A sampling will become a more useful tool forinventories of plant populations. Our new theory is an important step in this direction.

  • Exploratory Learning Strucutre in Artificial Cognitive Systems
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Cognitive Vision Workshop. - Bielefeld : eCollections.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • One major goal of the COSPAL project is to develop an artificial cognitive system architecture with the capability of exploratory learning. Exploratory learning is a strategy that allows to apply generalization on a conceptual level, resulting in an extension of competences. Whereas classical learning methods aim at best possible generalization, i.e., concluding from a number of samples of a problem class to the problem class itself, exploration aims at applying acquired competences to a new problem class. Incremental or online learning is an inherent requirement to perform exploratory learning. Exploratory learning requires new theoretic tools and new algorithms. In the COSPAL project, we mainly investigate reinforcement-type learning methods for exploratory learning and in this paper we focus on its algorithmic aspect. Learning is performed in terms of four nested loops, where the outermost loop reflects the user-reinforcement-feedback loop, the intermediate two loops switch between different solution modes at symbolic respectively sub-symbolic level, and the innermost loop performs the acquired competences in terms of perception-action cycles. We present a system diagram which explains this process in more detail. We discuss the learning strategy in terms of learning scenarios provided by the user. This interaction between user ('teacher') and system is a major difference to most existing systems where the system designer places his world model into the system. We believe that this is the key to extendable robust system behavior and successful interaction of humans and artificial cognitive systems. We furthermore address the issue of bootstrapping the system, and, in particular, the visual recognition module. We give some more in-depth details about our recognition method and how feedback from higher levels is implemented. The described system is however work in progress and no final results are available yet. The available preliminary results that we have achieved so far, clearly point towards a successful proof of the architecture concept.

  • Radar signal processing using pipelined optical hypercube interconnects
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 15th International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium. - Los Alamitos, California : IEEE Computer Society Press. - 0769509908 ; , s. 2043-2052
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we consider the mapping of two radar algorithms on a new scalable hardware architecture. The architecture consists of several computational modules that work independently and send data simultaneously in order to achieve high throughput. Each computational module is composed of multiple processors connected in a hypercube topology to meet scalability and high bisection bandwidth requirements. Free-space optical interconnects and planar packaging technology make it possible to transform the hypercubes into planes. Optical fan-out reduces the number of optical transmitters and thus the hardware cost. Two example systems are analyzed and mapped onto the architecture. One 64-channel airborne radar system with a sustained computational load of more than 1.6 TFLOPS, and one ground-based 128-channel radar system with extreme inter-processor communication demands.

  • A convex optimization approach to cancer treatment to address tumor heterogeneity and imperfect drug penetration in physiological compartments
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 IEEE 55th Conference on Decision and Control, CDC 2016. - 9781509018376 ; , s. 2494-2500
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The clinical success of targeted cancer therapies is limited by the emergence of drug resistance often due to pre-existing tumor genetic heterogeneity and acquired, therapy-induced resistance. Targeted therapies have varied success in addressing metastatic disease, due to their ability to penetrate certain physiological compartments. This paper considers an evolutionary cancer model that incorporates tumor cell growth, mutation and compartmental migration and leverages recent results on the optimal control of monotone and convex systems to synthesize switching treatment strategies where a single drug or a predetermined combination of drugs is used at a given time. The need for switching is motivated by clinical considerations such as the limited effectiveness of any single targeted therapy against multiple resistance mechanisms arising in a single patient and the inability to design drug combinations at effective doses due to toxicity constraints. An optimal and clinically feasible switching therapy is obtained as the solution of a convex optimization problem that exploits the diagonally-dominant structure of the model. We demonstrate that this method yields an effective strategy in mitigating disease evolution in the presence of imperfect drug penetration in two compartments on an experimentally identified model of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-rearranged lung carcinoma.

    • An important part of a society’s resilience is how prepared it is to cope with the changing conditions during the alpha and omega phases according to resilience theory. Lars Thofelt, an academic from the mid Sweden region, early recognized this need for students to develop skills needed for a societal change, and devoted his life to pedagogy suitable for this. The main outcome of his achievement was the interdisciplinary university program in Ecotechnics/Ecotechnology (Ekoteknik in Swedish), at Mid Sweden University. Ecology, economy and technology in cooperation for sustainable development were the original approach, and still are.Thofelt’s ideas had a main focus of helping students develop their inherent capabilities of solving problems and overcome obstacles. After Thofelt’s 12 years at the program his ideas were carried on by former colleagues and students, and the teaching further developed with a mix of the Thofelt tradition and other experiences brought in by new employees. This paper describes this interdisciplinary teaching approach with special focus on development of resilience capacity in students. It was concluded that 1) a key element to develop resilience skills in students is to push them to a self-propelled learning behavior rather than traditional teaching, 2) not too easily provide the students with answers will develop their problem solving skills, 3) doing-before-reading teaching is more time consuming but seem to give deeper knowledge, 4) interdisciplinary teaching will in the long run benefit from having the interdisciplinary team within the department, rather than as a conglomerate of several departments.

  • Factors influencing PM10 emissions from road pavement wear
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 1352-2310. ; 43:31, s. 4699-4702
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Accelerated pavement wear is one of the major environmental disadvantages of studded tyres in northern regions and results in increased levels of PM10. Measurements of PM10 in a road simulator hall have been used to study the influence of pavement properties, tyre type and vehicle speed on pavement wear. The test set-up included three different pavements (one granite and two quartzite with different aggregate sizes), three different tyre types (studded, non-studded, and summer tyres) and different speeds (30-70 km h(-1)). The results show that the granite pavement was more prone to PM10 production compared to the quartzite pavements. Studded winter tyres yield tens of times higher PM10 concentrations compared to non-studded winter tyres. Wear from summer tyres was negligible in comparison. It was also shown that wear is strongly dependent on speed; every 10 km h(-1) increase yielded an increase of the PM10 concentration of 680 mu g m(-3) in one of the simulator experiments.
