  • Dietary Advice on Prescription : A novel approach to dietary counseling
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - London : Informa Healthcare. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 6:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes a novel approach to giving dietary advice, which is called "Dietary Advice on Prescription" (DAP; Matordning på Recept [MoR] in Swedish). It is the same principle as prescription on medicine and "Physical Activity on Prescription" (PAP; Fysisk aktivitet på Recept [FaR] in Swedish). The main idea is that a written prescription will strengthen the oral advice and emphasize certain aspects of the dietary recommendation. The DAP is on the brink of being tested in a planned study.

  • Effects of a shift from a mixed diet to a lacto-vegetarian diet on some coronary heart disease risk markers
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bakgrund: The aim of the study was to investigate whether a shift from a mixed diet to a lacto-vegetarian diet would lead to a decreased risk for coronary heart diseases indicated by surrogate markers. Metod: Twenty volunteers participated in the study (4 men and 16 women, mean age 44 years, range 27-61). Clinical examinations were performed, blood samples were drawn and dietary survey, i.e. repeated 24-h recalls were carried out before (0 months) and 3, 6 and 12 months after the dietary change.Resultat: The dietary shift lead to an increase in the intake of total carbohydrates and fiber and a decrease in fat, protein and sucrose. The coronary heart disease risk markers body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol and low-density lipoptrotein cholesterol decreased statistically significantly.Sammanfattning: There was a decrease in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and other disease risk markers even though the ratio polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acids was unchanged indicating that a decreased energy intake is more important than a change in the distribution of fat, carbohydrates and protein. The main finding in this study is that there was a weight loss, sustained for one year, without any recommendation to decrease the energy intake. Thus, this may be the most important effect of choosing a vegetarian diet.

  • Effects of a shift from a mixed diet to a lacto-vegetarian diet on some coronary heart disease risk markers
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Open Journal of Preventive Medicine. - Irvine, CA : Scientific Research Publishing. - 2162-2477 .- 2162-2485. ; 2:1, s. 16-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background:There is convincing evidence that vegetarians have lower incidence of coronary heart disease, but there is a debate as to why this is the case. Objective:The aim of the study was to investigate whether a shift from a mixed diet to a lacto-vegetarian diet would lead to a decrease in risk for coronary heart diseases indicated by surrogate markers.Design:Twenty volunteers participated in the study (4 men and 16 women, mean age 44 years, range 27 - 61) from a town in western Sweden. Clinical examinations were performed, blood samples were drawn and dietary survey, i.e. repeated 24-h recalls were carried out before (0 months) and 3, 6 and 12 months after the change from a mixed diet to a lacto-vegetarian diet. A dietician educated the volunteers with regard to the vegetarian dietary regimen, organized and taught the vegetarian cooking courses. Results:The dietary shift lead to an increase in the intake of total carbohydrates and fibre and a decrease in fat, protein and sucrose. The coronary heart disease risk markers body weight, body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol and low-density lipoptrotein cholesterol decreased significantly. Conclusions:There was a decrease in disease risk markers even though the ratio polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acids was unchanged. The main finding in this study is that there was a weight loss, sustained for one year, without any recommendation to decrease the energy intake or any focus on weight reduction.

  • Everyday hassles and uplifts among women on long-term sick-leave due to stress-related disorders
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy. - London : Informa Healthcare. - 1103-8128 .- 1651-2014. ; 19:3, s. 239-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A balance between different experiences of occupations in everyday life is important for well-being. The study aim was to describe hassles and uplifts in everyday occupations among women on long-term sick-leave due to stress-related disorders. The sample consisted of 77 women and experiences were collected by the THU-5 instrument. The statements were analysed using quantitative content analysis. Data were categorized into three domains of hassles concerning oneself, doings, and social and physical context. The same domains occurred among the uplifts. Hassles were mostly generated by disturbing people around the women and by their limited body functions. The women were uplifted by supportive social relationships and by performing relaxing and calming occupations. The study illuminates the strong need for social support among women on sick-leave, as well as their low level of energy, which was an obvious obstacle for performing occupations. It is suggested that, in order to increase well-being in the target group, the occupational therapist should meet their need for occupations that match their current level of energy. The challenge for the client is to avoid remaining in a pattern of low-demand occupations without exceeding her/his capacity and returning to an unhealthy pattern of occupations. © 2012 Informa Healthcare.

  • FaR-receptförskrivning i Halland, en femårstrend 2005-2009
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Measuring oral health from a public health perspective
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Swedish Dental Journal. - Stockholm : Swedish Dental Association. - 0347-9994. ; 32:3, s. 125-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper aims to analyse measures of oral health-related quality of life (OHOOL) from a Public Health perspective. Twenty-two measures were analysed conceptually as to their mirroring of the Public Health principles: empowerment, participation, holism and equity. Elements of empowerment were found in connection with application of the measures. Participation was found in using lay opinions during development in 12 measures. All measures analysed had elements of a holistic approach so far that they were not wholly biological. Two measures captured positive health effects. Measures were available for all ages, various languages and populations, an element of equity. No measure was wholly compatible with Public Health. They were based on a utilitarian theory not in full accordance with modern health promotion. There is a need to develop measures that more obviously capture the positive aspects of health and health as a process, as well as the personal perspective of oral health.
