  • Designing for Interdependence : A Poetics of Relating
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of LINK 2022. - Auckland : AUT - Auckland University of Technology School of Art & Design. ; , s. 21-24
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The presentation gives an overview of the book Designing for Interdependence: A Poetics of Relating which is about the practice of designing and design’s capacity to relate (or not) to beings of all kinds, human and others, in ways that are life-affirming. Sensitive to power differentials and the responsibility that this entails, the author develops the notion of alter-natives, a concept that exposes the alterity of artificial things and the potential of these things to participate in the sustainment of environments. The notion of alter-natives indicates the alterity of a thing, its own foreignness to environments by being artificial, fabricated by humans. It demands thinking how some-thing alters the relations to those that live in an environment, how it makes them different in some way. It suggests the possibility that these ‘others’ (alterity) may enter a process of ‘nativization’, if they are designed within the ecological and biological constraints of the particular places where they will be used. Finally, the notion of alter-natives does not explain, does not explicate; it demands answers, the implications need to be unfolded, traced, maintained. Alter-natives emphasize vulnerability in order to become life-affirming. The book immerses the reader in a poetics of relating, a semiotic practice of interrelating humans, artificial things and other-than-human species, a design practice that can make us more explicitly dependable on life and communication across species, a designing for interdependence that can support the necessary rewilding that must happen if we are to contribute to the stabilization of planetary dynamics and the affirmation of cultural and biological diversity. By challenging anthropocentrism through design, a practice emerges from questioning human mastery, and thus a poetics of relating is developed by means of a letting go of control acknowledging other-than-human needs and capacities. In this sense the book is about control, at least to the extent that a human can let go of control by designing something that affirms her living. Avoiding dualistic thinking and the dichotomies harmful-benefit, construction-destruction, natural-artificial, and life-death, the author pursues the work of caring for how our mattering through design becomes both, constructive and destructive in more-than-human ecologies.

  • Ecologizing, Decolonizing : An Artefactual Perspective
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: NORDES 2017.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper I present a design project developed in Córdoba, Argentina, entitled ‘Spices-Species’. Through this case study, I discuss the possibility of designing using two decolonial strategies —"objectivity (or truth) in parenthesis" and " being where one does and thinks"— that can lead to delinking, on a micropolitical scale, from colonial social patterns as well as reconnecting humans with natural processes and beings to which they are detached by means of devices. The paper suggests that these decolonial strategies, combined with the performance of designed artefacts may help to acknowledge not only human diversity, but also the multiple and diverse nonhuman beings that conform and participate in different localities.

  • Three Ecologies Diffracted : Intersectionality for Ecological Caring
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 8th Bi-Annual Nordic Design Research Society Conference - Who Cares? 2-4th of June 2019 Finland. - Espoo, Finland.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This essay commemorates the 30th anniversary of the publication of Félix Guattari’s The Three Ecologies. It does so by proposing a ‘diffractive’ reading of the book, suggesting latent potential in each of the overlapping “ecologies” that conformed the ecosophysketched by Guattari. There are mainly two aspects of The Three Ecologies addressed in this essay. Firstly, the understanding of the general frame of the interrelation of the three ecologies as an “intersectional” approach. Secondly, the understanding of this form of intersectionality as a possible platform to acknowledge other-than-human ‘intersections’. Through the essay I exemplify with one of my own design projects to help situating the claims and the questions raised. Finally, I propose a multimodal explorative framework of the three ecologies to explicitly articulate human and other-than-human beings inter and intra-relatedness.

  • A field experiment on the impact of sounds from a jet-and-basin fountain on soundscape quality in an urban park
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Landscape and Urban Planning. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-2046 .- 1872-6062. ; 123, s. 49-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A field experiment was conducted to explore whether water sounds from a fountain had a positive impact on soundscape quality in a downtown park. In total, 405 visitors were recruited to answer a questionnaire on how they perceived the park, including its acoustic environment. Meanwhile the fountain was turned on or off, at irregular hours. Water sounds from the fountain were not directly associated with ratings of soundscape quality. Rather, the predictors of soundscape quality were the variables “Road-traffic noise” and “Other natural sounds”. The former had a negative and the latter a positive impact. However, water sounds may have had an indirect impact on soundscape quality by affecting the audibility of road-traffic and natural sounds. The present results, obtained in situ, agree with previous results in soundscape research that the sounds perceived—particularly roadtraffic and natural sounds—explain soundscape quality. They also agree with the results from laboratory studies that water sounds may mask road-traffic sounds, but that this is not simple and straight forward. Thus sound should be brought into the design scheme when introducing water features in urban open spaces, and their environmental impact must be thoroughly assessed empirically.

  • How much for a tree? : How planning goes wild and the values of trees
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Nordes No 6, 2015. - Stockholm : Konstfack. - 9789185549191
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This exhibition item contains a book, “How much for a tree” and a 4 channel video installation. The book investigates a planning process in Malmö, that turns out as a disaster. A hundred year old park is destroyed. The investigation of the process is done in the form of a drama, where all the people involved get to tell their version. The question that is posed is: What are the values that are destroyed by this planning disaster? The video installation tries to give an answer to the question from the authors’ point of view. What are the values of trees? There are numerous ways of valuing trees, from biologic estimation on the value for insects and other plants, from the perspective of the property owner, from the importance for the air quality in the city, etc. For telling the values of trees from non-anthropocentric view, the trees importance for humans is not important. A non-anthropocentric view values what trees are in themselves, as far as it is possible for human beings to identify. The authors, both artists, suggest that through artistic means it is possible to touch upon and communicate the real non-anthropocentric values of trees.

  • Motivation, Learning Strategies and Performance among Business Undergraduates at University Colleges in Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Business, Management and Education. - Vilnius : Vilnius Gediminas Technical University Press. - 2029-7491 .- 2029-6169. ; 17:2, s. 111-133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – This paper brings new material to the understanding of interlinkages between motivation, learning and performance in academic contexts. By investigating these interlinkages in a new context – students of business and management at a Swedish university college – it seeks to answer the following research questions: How do students’ degree and type of motivation relate to their learning strategies?; how do students’ degree and type of motivation and learning strategies relate to their academic success?; and how do student characteristics in terms of experience and gender influence the nature and strength of these relationships?Research methodology – The data used in this paper is based on student surveys and a centralised system of reporting and archiving academic results. The latter contains information on the academic performance of individual students, whereas the surveys gathered information on the students’ background characteristics (experience and gender), their motivation for pursuing academic studies and their learning strategies. The difference in proportion tests and OLS regressions were then applied to investigate differences between student groups and relationships between the different variables.Findings – The findings reveal that business students are more extrinsically than intrinsically motivated; that deep learning approaches lead to higher grades for particular examination forms, and that female students are typically more intrinsically motivated, engage more in deep learning approaches and perform better than their male counterparts.Practical implications – The findings suggest that practitioners in higher education involved with the business and/or university college students have good reasons to stimulate motivation generally, and intrinsic motivation in particular. However, this must be accompanied by examination forms that promote deep learning.Originality/Value – In contrast to most research, this paper focuses on the interlinkages between motivation, learning and performance among business students in a university college setting. This contrasts most research on this topic which tends to be focused on university students, particularly in the US, in other fields of study or accounting. Moreover, this paper also takes student characteristics into account and uses a variety of measures to operationalise academic performance. Copyright © 2019 Bengtsson & Teleman. • Fear and design : How can design impact on fear? How can design raise questions about fear?
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nordes 2007. - : Nordes.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This ongoing practice based research project investigates how design can work with or against fear, raise questions about fear and how rules about fear can be used in the design process. The approach in this work is to raise questions rather than finding solutions or making products adjusted to commercial needs. The focus is put on fear of global warming, a topic of current interest. The tool used in this case are textiles printed with thermo chromic paint that change in colour due to temperature. With this technique patterns and images can be modified, messages by text or images can appear and disappear. The aim is to through images and patterns communicate and create awareness and to highlight topics in a subtle and poetic way rather than using the apocalyptic tone found in media for example. The aim is also to give a holistic picture and embrace the complexity of the issue rather than presenting straight answers.
