- In the novels Fuegia (1991) by Eduardo Belgrano Rawson and La tierra del fuego (1998) by Sylvia Iparraguirre, the indigenous inhabitants and the territory of Tierra del Fuego become representable through gazes and voices that (re)produce ethnical, linguistic and national borders that take root in the Nineteenth century. Following this, two kinds of erasure can be observed. On the one hand, by focalizing on the conflicts between the British and the Fuegians, the colonizing role of the Argentine State towards the territory and its inhabitants is made invisible. On the other hand, through a narration that avoids problematizing the use of the Spanish language for the writing of history, the indigenous people are made invisible as subjects. This allows us to propose that in the Argentinian literature of the end of the Twentieth Century some of the traits of the utopia of a monoglossic nation are still at work.

- Dentro de un contexto intelectual que intenta exponer un “blanqueamiento” de la población en la Argentina, este trabajo tematiza la cuestión de la identidad nacional argentina desde el punto de vista de la elite intelectual situada en Buenos Aires y enfatizada por la presencia de un recurso de ambigüedad de lo fantástico: el juego con los fantasmas de cada sociedad, con aquello que cada sociedad quisiera ocultar, silenciar, “hacer ausente”, pero no puede. Basado en la idea de “frontera” y en “la cuestión del indio” –figura problemática para una sociedad que se percibe europea–, el trabajo borda sobre el establecimiento de límites que separan el discurso entre el territorio de un "nosotros” y el de un “ellos”, que se convierte lo mismo en un “ellos” salvaje y ominoso que amenaza la imagen que los argentinos tienen de sí mismos.

- This paper presents a study of the creation of monstrous worlds in two shortstories of Latin-american writers. The stories are “Los embriones del violeta” (1973) by Argentinian Angelica Gorodischer and “Cárcel de árboles” by Guatemalan Rodrigo Rey Rosa. These monstrous worlds may be understood as nightmarish projections of the sociocultural realities with which these texts establish a dialog. Also, the paper studies the ways both stories thematise the act of writing and its limitations when the memory of monstrosity is to be narrated. Este trabajo presenta un estudio de la creación de mundos monstruosos en dos cuentos de escritores latinoamericanos: “Los embriones del violeta” (1973) de la argentina Angélica Gorodischer y “Cárcel de árboles” (1992) del guatemalteco Rodrigo Rey Rosa. Estos mundos monstruosos pueden entenderse como proyecciones pesadillescas de las realidades socio-culturales con las cuales dialogan los textos. Asimismo, el trabajo estudia cómo en los cuentos se tematiza la escritura y sus limitaciones al momento de narrar las memorias de lo monstruoso.

- The literary work of María Negroni constantly creates dialogues between genres and media. Focusing on her long poem La jaula bajo el trapo (1991) and her novel La Anunciación (2007), this article aims to analyse how the texts, through the written representation of other media, activate the conative function of language, summoning the reader to take the position of a spectator; that is, to assume the role of the theatre audience when viewing a performance. This reader-audience role will in turn open the possibility of, by a combination of cognitive processes and sensorial perception, getting in touch with those aspects of experience and memory that are never put into words. Through the analysed examples, the article postulates that the texts in question invite to reflect not only on the limitations of language as regards describing experience, but also on the notion of subject and the idea of a unitary subjectivity.

- The article analyses 14 obituaries of men of science that appeared in the journal Boletín Geográfico Argentino between 1889 and 1910. It is argued that together they form a pantheon of memorable bodies that stands out in contrast to other bodies, namely those that, at the same time and by the same men, are being collected for the museums of natural history. The focus of the article lies on how the figure of the scientist is constructed through a series of recurrent themes, such as laboriosity, productivity and devotion to the nation. These, contrasted with other articles in the magazine, help us visualize the practices of power and of knowledge embedded in the genre. The discussion raises questions about the tensions between the private and the public as well as those between the individual and the community. The analysis shows that although the worthiness of a place in the pantheon of memorable men is closely linked to the exercise of violence in the name of a nation and in the name of science, this exercise is silenced at the moment of exhibiting death in the studied obituaries.
