  • Unstable Identities: Stable Unsustainability
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Development. - : Wiley InterScience. - 0968-0802 .- 1099-1719. ; 18:3, s. 119-122
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The identity concept has emerged as a key analytical concept in the social sciences in the past decades. In both scientifi c accounts and everyday use, the identity concept has tradi- tionally been seen as something that individuals possess. This view has however been heavily criticized by a social identity strand of social science, where identity is a matter of a negotiation where different social roles are learned in relations with others. The relational view of identities creates some serious problems for the sustainability challenge. In a world of relational identities, individuals are engaged in identity-creating interactions every day. Key problems are that the interactions, in urban environments, are highly commercialized; consumption cues are emotionally based and speak to our senses, and outnumber the competing cues several times over. Sustainable lifestyles are thus very fragile.

  • Foreign ownership and investment : do firms locate investments close to the headquarter?
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Review of World Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1610-2878 .- 1610-2886. ; 147:4, s. 621-642
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using an international panel data set of the European pulp and paper industry, we address the issue of a possible home-bias effect for real investments in plants with foreign and domestic locations. We find that there is no effect after controlling for firm effects and plant and firm size. These findings are rubust to a number of different econometric specifications, including a difference-in-difference approach. Our findings appear to be relevant for the debate on the effect of foreign takeovers. As far as we are aware, home-bias effects in real investments within multinational firms have not been studied previously.

  • Att skapa en upplevelseindustri
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nordisk kulturpolitisk tidskrift. - : Högskolan i Borås. - 1403-3216 .- 2000-8325. ; 14:1-2, s. 71-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years the notion that culture can be used as an instrument for economic growth has gained foothold in Sweden and Swedish cultural policy. In order to understand this development we need to study the organizations that have promoted ideas about the economic potential of cultural activities. In this article I have focused on one such organization, namely the Swedish Knowledge foundation, which during the time period of 2000-2009 invested SEK 99 million in the Swedish experience industry. The article investigates why the Knowledge foundation decided to make this investment and how they transformed the idea that cultural activities have a potential for economic growth into practice. Using translation theory and an organizational institutional perspective the study shows that the Swedish Knowledge foundation chose to invest in the experience industry because similar investments had been made in other countries such as the United Kingdom. However, the Knowledge foundation’s investment represented no copy of the international models but was translated to fit the new Swedish context.

  • Corporate Social Responsibility : Discourse, Narratives and Communication
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. - : Wiley InterScience. - 1535-3958 .- 1535-3966. ; 17:2, s. 63-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The problematic and contestable nature of discourses on corporate social responsibility (CSR) has driven the commissioning of this special issue on discourses, narratives, and communication about CSR. While CSR may be seen as sharing normative goals with the concept of sustainable development, there are fundamental questions to be asked about the nature and purpose of CSR, how it has been constructed and framed, and whether it promotes the normative goals of sustainable development in order to effect change to the business-as-usual model. The teasing out of the different discourses of CSR has become an important theme in academic research in recent years. In this issue, that discourse is developed. The authors discover gaps between CSR as understood by civil society groups and radical non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the CSR norms promoted at corporate level. The latter fail to impact on business-as-usual, even though the same lan- guage may be used. The link between Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) reporting and market-value is explored; and CSR principles and actions promoted by business are cri- tiqued from the perspective of the norms of sustainable development, one conclusion being that the parameters of sustainable development as a concept need to be extended to include the dimension of culture.

  • Mobile communications in Turkey : from first mover advantages to management capabilities
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Info. - Bingley, UK : Emerald Group Publishing Ltd.. - 1463-6697 .- 1465-9840. ; 13:2, s. 72-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – Several studies of the telecommunications industry have focused on government regulation and structural conditions, suggesting that initial order of entry and network effects create strong first-mover advantages for GSM companies. This paper seeks to change the focus to managerial capabilities and to investigate how an early mover on the Turkish market manages the phase of vigorous competition following the early-regulated period. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is a case study of one leading firm in the context of the Turkish telecommunications market development. The most important sources for data are Telepati Telekom Journal, Turkcell Annual Reports, Telecommunications Authority of Turkey's publications, the reports of investment institutions, web pages of operators, and previous publications about the Turkish telecom industry. Findings – The paper finds that the early mover, Turkcell, has used a mix of differentiated marketing strategies, innovative and diversified product development and increased service quality to defend its position in an era of increased competition with new operators, a high number of pre-paid customers and number portability. Originality/value – On the basis of this case, the paper argues that studies of the telecommunications industry need to expand their analyses of industry structures to also include firm-specific strategies and management capabilities.

  • NGO power in global social and environmental standard-setting
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Global Environmental Politics. - : Massachusetts Institute of Technology Press (MIT Press): Arts & Humanities Titles etc. - 1526-3800 .- 1536-0091. ; 10:4, s. 36-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have seen a worldwide increase in new nonstate, multi-stakeholder organizations setting standards for socially and environmentally responsible behavior. These standard-setting arenas offer new channels for political participation for NGOs. Scholars have drawn attention to the rise and the role of NGOs in global politics, but there is less research on the power and long-term implications of NGO participation in transnational multi-stakeholder standard-setting. This article analyzes NGOs within three such global organizations: the Forest Stewardship Council, the Marine Stewardship Council, and the International Organization for Standardization on Social Responsibility. Using a power-based perspective, we demonstrate the impact that NGOs can have on multi-stakeholder work. In doing so, we analyze four types of NGO power: symbolic, cognitive, social, and monitoring power. The article further emphasizes institutional, structural, and discursive factors within multi-stakeholder organizations that create certain challenges to NGO power and participation in the longer term.

  • Banks and Swedish financial crises in the 1920s and 1930s
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Business History. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0007-6791 .- 1743-7938. ; 53:2, s. 230-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Financial crises occur at regular and unpredictable moments in capitalist economies. However, an absence of shared theoretical approaches to and even definitions of the subject still plague the analysis of financial crises. This situation makes historical analysis even more important. This article compares two Swedish financial crises, one in the 1920s and the other in the 1930s. The comparison shows that despite their temporal and spatial proximity, the crises seemed to have had quite different underlying causes, links to international circumstances, severity, and government responses. The 1920s crisis in Sweden was for instance much deeper than the crisis in the 1930s, a marked contrast to the experience of most countries during these two periods. In focusing on the driving forces behind the crises, their development and governmental policies, the article also provides an opportunity to reflect on both financial crisis theories, on the current crisis and on recent historical research concerning crises.

  • The Limits of R&D Internationalization and the Importance of Local Initiatives: Turkey as a Critical Case
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: World Development. - : Elsevier. - 0305-750X .- 1873-5991. ; 39:8, s. 1347-1357
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The growth of Randamp;D in East Asia has triggered the notion of a new innovation geography, where Randamp;D is no longer a privilege of the traditional OECD countries. What does this mean for mid-sized emerging economies, without the scale advantages and bargaining power of India or China? This paper uses Turkey as a case to examine the continual unevenness of international Randamp;D investments. By analyzing opportunities and limitations for local initiatives in the telecommunications, pharmaceutical, and automotive industries the paper finds that active private capital, a sufficient scale of production, and focused public policies are needed to attract international Randamp;D.
