    • The recent occurrence in the USA of deliberate release of virulent Bacillus anthracis in letters sent to three media corporations and to the American senate has led to a great anxiety in Sweden and elsewhere in Europe. Numerous letters have been suspected to contain B. anthracis spores and several have contained powder of different types. In none of the tested letters collected by the Swedish police have we been able to detect anthrax bacilli. Powder containing letters have been tested with either bacterial isolation and/or B. anthracis specific PCR. Anthrax is a disease found naturally in herbivores and is occasionally spread to humans. It is caused by the gram-positive rod B. anthracis that was discovered by Robert Koch in 1876. Beginning in the 1930s many states have developed B. anthracis for use as a weapon. A few releases of the bacteria have been reported before October 2001. B. anthracis causes three forms of disease, cutaneous, pulmonary and gastro-intestinal. The pulmonary form is the most dangerous and may lead to death merely one to two days after onset of severe symptoms. This is due to the rapid growth and release of several potent toxins that engage the immune system and promote tissue destruction. B. anthracis infection can be treated with several antibiotics, among which quinolones and tetracyclins have been recommended. Diagnosis can readily be achieved by microscopy, bacterial isolation and PCR at the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control and the Swedish Defence Research Agency. Antibiotics relevant for treatment of B. anthracis infections are already stockpilled in our country. Further actions to strengthen our capability to deal with bioterrorism are ongoing.

    • Som ett specialprojekt om hälsorelaterad miljöövervakning har studerats om hälsoundersökningsdata avseende fibrinogenhalt i blod kan användas som en indikator på luftföroreningspåverkan. Bakgrunden är att det under senare år har publicerats flera studier i vilka samband konstaterats mellan dygnets eller de senaste dygnens luftföroreningshalt (främst partiklar eller avgaskomponenter) och det dygnsvisa antalet dödsfall eller sjukhusinläggningar p g a hjärtsjukdom. Mekanismerna bakom effekterna är inte helt klarlagda, men mycket talar för att en mekanism kan vara kroppens inflammationssvar som inducerar förändringar i blodets koaguleringsbenägenhet. Fibrinogen är en av de viktigaste faktorerna bakom blodets viskositet. Ökad fibrinogenhalt i blodplasma har tidigare konstaterats dels i samband med en luftföroreningsepisod i Tyskland och när hälsoundersökningsdata från London korrelerats till kvävedioxidhalten dygnet innan blodprovet togs. I denna undersökning har vi använt data om fibrinogenhalten (g/l) i blodprover som tagits i den befolkningsbaserade MONICA-undersökningen i Norr- och Västerbotten under januari-april 1990 och 1994, och utifrån undersökningsdatum påfört individerna uppgifter om halten av ozon respektive sot samma och intilliggande dygn. För närmare 3400 personer vars blodprov kunnat sammankopplas med aktuell ozonhalt, konstaterar vi att fibrinogenhalten ökar med stigande ozonvärde. Sambandet är statistiskt säkerställt vid en analys med hänsyn till individfaktorer av betydelse för fibrinogenhalten. En ökning av ozonhalten med 50 μg/m3 (från 10:e till 90:e percentilen) leder till en i genomsnitt 3 % ökad fibrinogenhalt.

    • The background to this study is that there is no studies on youth and their transition to adulthood in preindustrial Sweden. The main objective of this thesis has therefore been to analyze young peoples transition to adulthood during the late 18th and 19th centuries in a region of the northern part of Sweden. The social context of the region was mainly agrarian during the investigated period despite the fact that in the later part of the 19th and beginning of 20th century, a development of a growing forest industry had started. The main questions is: How and when in life did different social categories of young people establish an independent and adult life? Where there any changes in transitional patterns and was the establishment smoother or more troublesome at different times during the investigated period ? Where there any changes regarding social norms related to the establishment of adult life?The transition to adult life is studied from a life-course approach and four key-transitions; The First Holy communion, leaving home, marriage and parenthood are regarded as significant steps within the process to a independent social position. Individual data related to keytransitions is mainly collected from cathectical examination records and comprised 2206 individuals born in six different cohorts between 1770 and 1900. The selected cohorts represents individuals that had to deal with different social conditions during their youth and transition to adult life.The main results regarding the transition to adult life can be summarized in two words, complexity and variance. Usually it was a "long" transition but the number of accomplished keytransitions and the order between them varied, as well as ages when taking the first Holy Communion, leaving home, marriage and entering parenthood varied. Transitional patterns varied between different categories of youth. A dividing line existed between the sexes, those from households strongly rooted in the agricultural structure and those with background in social categories that didn't own or was in possession of land. Social norms related to keytransitons changed along this dividing line during the investigated period of time, and became less permissive within landowning or land-possessing categories and less prescriptive in other categories.Transitional patterns were also influenced by the social situation at different historical times. The need for labor, war and years of famine directly intervened in timing and sequencing of keytransitions. A long term development was that the transition to adult life became more problematic in the later part of the 19th century, especially among young people who were less integrated in the social context and among socially stigmatized youth. Finally, young people were active and reflexive in seeking social space to make the transition to adult life, actions that sometimes caused tensions and conflicts between generations.

    • In this thesis the vocational orientation of the courses offered - as an expression of the folk high school's self-identity- is analysed. The point of departure was that what the folk high school do, is a way to show what it wants to be and, therefore, reflects what it is. Focus is on how the folk high school meets with contemporary tasks and demands in different areas of society. The research objects are, the folk high school as type of school (a total of 147 schools) and a sample of ten individual schools with different ownership. The study is about what the offered courses reveal about the folk high school's reflections and conclusions as regards its future activities in relation to its history and contemporary society.The theoretical framework of the thesis is built on the sociologist Anthony Giddens 'Theory of Structuration' and the concepts of structure and agency. Reflections about the surrounding world and the contributions the schools' want to make in society is assumed to result in a more or less conscious strategy for the future, the folk high school's course politics as it is expressed in action. The identity has been interpreted in vocational roles as they appear in course contents. The word 'vocation' is used in almost the same sense as Giddens defines 'work'.Self-identity was analysed from three different kinds of texts and with one question for each. In the first perspective focus is on official investigations and political decisions, in the period 1970-2000. What role in society is imposed upon the folk high school in contemporary educational policies? In the second perspective all courses offered at all folk high schools in 1972 and 2000 are studied, in order to present a picture of the overall pattern of vocational orientation. In the third perspective the course politics of the ten selected folk high schools are investigated, from the start of the respective schools, and in relation to what each school thinks it 'is'- with different owners and in its particular geographical situation.One overriding conclusion is that the characteristics that make the identity of the folk high school seem unclear and paradoxical are the very same that constitute the self-identity of the folk high school as being complex and multifaceted. The self-identity seems paradoxical when the vocational orientation presents itself as both preserving traditions and answering to today's needs. In other words, the school 'does what it has always done' (is conservative) and at the same time 'captures new needs and tasks' (is flexible).The folk high school's role and uniqueness in what they actually do can be understood as what I have called 'contemporaneous civic functionaries'. Their profiles emerge when flexibility is based on history. I want to designate 'existential rationality' to the motivating mechanism that seems to at the same time force changes and lean on own experiences. Expressing contemporary self-identity is grounded in the individual tradition as motivationbased values, cultural and geographic conditions.

    • Skolan har ett stort och viktigt ansvar för att utveckla kunskaper i det svenska språket för människor som kommer till Sverige från andra länder. I kapitlet beskrivs, utifrån ett sociokulturellt perspektiv, hur några kvinnor som är analfabeter lär sig det svenska språket samt lär sig läsa och skriva på svenska inom svenskundervisning för invandrare. Studien som har sitt ursprung i avhandlingen Skolan i livet - Livet i skolan visar att kommunikation vanligtvis bygger på I-R-U mönster men att kollaborativa samtal förekommer. Det som också framkommer är att deltagarnas erfrenheter inte tas tillvara i undersvisningssituationer i någon större utsträckning. Det medför i sin tur att deltagarna känner sig okunniga.
