- PURPOSE: To investigate the occurrence of myofibroblasts (MFBs) in the normal conjunctival surface and to evaluate any anatomical and time-related variations. METHODS: MFBs were screened among healthy individuals (35 eyes) by collecting impression cytology (IC) samples from the bulbar conjunctiva. A cohort of volunteers (12 eyes) was followed for 1 year by taking two to five imprints every month. MFBs were identified by immunohistochemical localization of the MFB marker alpha-smooth-muscle actin (alpha-SMA). RESULTS: Using a filter imprint technique, MFBs were found consistently in 94% of samples from the conjunctival surface of participating individuals. The overall MFB levels, expressed as percentage of all cells on the filter, were highest in March-May [mean 4.1%, standard deviation (SD) +/- 1.5] and lowest in December-February (mean 1.2%, SD +/- 0.5). The difference was statistically significant [p < 0.0005, Friedman test, one-way repeated measures analysis of variance (anova)]. Moreover, there was a clear divergence of MFB density between the nasal, temporal, superior and inferior bulbar conjunctiva (mean 1.7%, 1.9%, 22% and 9.7%, respectively). CONCLUSION: MFBs, known as a cellular constituent of granulation tissue in wound healing, occur in the normal conjunctival surface, which is a novel finding. Our results also show that MFB level follows a seasonal variation pattern in a temperate climate, increasing in April-September and decreasing in October-March. This variation might reflect a degree of a transient or ongoing state of tissue repair after conjunctival trauma or stress caused by exposure to environmental factors.

- BACKGROUND: In this study we investigated the risk of multiple sclerosis (MS) in migrants who had moved from Iran to Gothenburg, Sweden. METHODS: Patients born in Iran were retrieved from a population-based cohort, which included 534 MS and clinically isolated syndrome patients, born 1959-1990, aged 10-39 years at disease onset in Gothenburg. The expected versus observed number of migrants from Iran was calculated. RESULTS: The MS risk in the Iranian migrants in Gothenburg was several times higher than in Isfahan, Iran (hazard ratio 3.88, 95% confidence interval 2.17-6.40). Compared with the general population of Gothenburg, the observed number of 17 Iranian patients was higher than the expected value of 9.89 (hazard ratio 1.72, 95% confidence interval 1.00-2.75). CONCLUSION: Migration from a medium-risk to a high-risk area may increase the MS risk to that of the high-risk area.

- A travers des interviews et des textes plus ou moins autobiographiques, Marguerite Duras a créé d’elle-même une image attachante qui a sans doute beaucoup fait pour maintenir l’engouement du lectorat international pour son œuvre. Cette image a été attaquée par de nombreux biographes, mais on note que ceux-ci sont loin d’être d’accord. Chacun crée une nouvelle image qu’il ou elle veut faire passer pour véridique, et le grand public a tout lieu de se demander à qui accorder foi. Ces dernières années, Laure Adler (1998) et Jean Vallier (2006) sont par exemple arrivés à des conclusions diamétralement opposées. Dans certains cas, cela s’explique par le fait qu’ils n’ont pas eu accès aux mêmes sources de documentation, mais dans d’autres cas, ils interprètent différemment les mêmes sources. Cela vaut par exemple pour le premier manuscrit dans lequel Duras raconte l’histoire du riche amant (indo)chinois et la jeune fille française, interprétée par Adler comme un document autobiographique et par Valier comme une fiction . Notre communication a pour but de comparer et d’évaluer ces deux biographies et de scruter leurs motivations profondes.

- BaZr0.9In0.05M0.05O3-d (M ¼ Ga3+ or Yb3+) has been prepared by solid-statesynthesis route.Rietveld analysis of neutron powder diffraction data on as-prepared samples showed thatboth samples crystallise in the cubic space group Pm-3m. Scanning electron microscopyanalysis showed that the grains intheBaZr0.9In0.05Ga0.05O3-d sample were larger than the BaZr0.9In0.05Yb0.05O3-d sample. Dynamic thermogravimetric analysis indicates that the proton concentration was higher inpre-hydrated BaZr0.9In0.05Ga0.05O3-d sample (40%oftheoretical)than that of BaZr0.9In0.05Yb0.05O3-d sample (28%oftheoretical).Proton conductivity was studied on pre-hydrated samples(under both dry and wetAr atmospheres).Thebulk proton conductivities of the heating cycle of pre-hydrated BaZr0.9In0.05M0.05O3-d (M ¼ Ga3+ or Yb3+) samples were 2.1 * 10-5 S cm-1 and 1.9 * 10-4 Scm-1 at 350C, respectively.The effect of co-doping onproton conductivity was investigatedand the results are compared with single doped systems e.g. BaZr0.9M0.1O3-d (M=Ga3+, In3+ orYb3+) samples.
