Sex differences in patients' recovery following an acute Achilles tendon rupture - a large cohort study

- Introduction The incidence of Achilles tendon ruptures (ATR) has increased over the past few decades. Treatment may be individualised based upon multiple factors including age, pre-injury activity level and the separation of the ruptured tendon ends. Several studies indicate that women may have a poorer self-reported and clinical outcome compared with men, but the number of women in these studies is often small due to the different incidence of ATR between the genders. Aims The primary aim of this study was to evaluate whether there is a difference in self-reported outcome after an acute ATR between women and men at one to five years following injury. The second aim was to compare the outcome between the surgically and non-surgically treated patients. Methods Data were obtained from the medical charts of patients treated for an acute ATR between 1 and 2015 and 31 December 2020 at Sahlgrenska University Hospital/Molndal. The Achilles tendon total rupture score (ATRS) and additional questions relating to treatment and recovery were determined. A multiple regression analysis was performed to isolate the impact of sex when comparing the patient-reported outcome between women and men. Results A total of 856 patients were included of which 66% participated prospectively. Sex, BMI and age were found to be significant factors influencing the total ATRS score. Female gender resulted in a lower ATRS, 7.8 points (CI = 3.3 to 12.3), than male gender. It was found that treatment did not significantly predict the results of the ATRS. Conclusion To our knowledge, this is the first report with a larger number of women included showing that female sex predicts inferior self-reported results after an acute ATR.

- Släktet skogsvaxskivlingar (Hygrophorus) består av ca 40 arter i Norden och de förekommer i alla skogliga ekosystem. Morfologiskt är släktet relativt lätt att känna igen med de karaktäristiskt vaxartade och vanligen nedlöpande skivorna. Att bestämma till art kan dock vara svårare eftersom flera arter är morfologiskt snarlika varandra, exempelvis i gruppen elfenbensvaxskivlingar. Detta har lett till sammanblandning av arter och i våra mest använda svampböcker står det ofta fel namn på vissa av arterna. På senare tid har släktet utretts med molekylära arbetsmetoder som visat att ekologin har stor betydelse. Arterna bildar ektomykorrhiza och lever i symbios med träd. Symbiosen tycks vara specifik och en skogsvaxskivlingsart verkar i regel vara knuten till endast en trädart. Genom att ta hänsyn till ekologin har vi kunnat ta fram en nyckel där tidigare svårbestämda arter nu kan bestämmas på ett enkelt sätt. Ungefär 15 av skogsvaxskivlingarna är vanliga, väl kända, och har en stor utbredning i landet. De flesta arterna är dock mindre kända, mer biotopkrävande, och kunskapen om deras egentliga utbredning och förekomst är fragmenterad. Under arbetet med den nya rödlistan uppmärksammades det att skogsvaxskivlingarna tycks ha minskat drastiskt de senaste årtiondena. Betydligt färre fynd av fruktkroppar har rapporterats och noterats av mykologer. Därför ansågs så många som 18 arter vara hotade (EN eller VU) eller nära hotade (NT) i den senaste svenska rödlistan. Orsaken till minskningen är delvis okänd men säkert en effekt av många faktorer där ökad näringstillgång i marken på grund av ett ökat kvävenedfall kan vara en anledning. En annan faktor är att flera arter verkar vara knutna till skogar med lång kontinuitet och därmed är hotade av modernt skogsbruk. Trenden med minskad förekomst av skogsvaxskivlingar är densamma i Väst- och Centraleuropa där arter som förr ansågs vanliga numera ses allt mer sällan. Sveriges Mykologiska Förening startar hösten 2011 ett väkteriprojekt kallat Vaxvakt. Mot bakgrund av att många skogsvaxskivlingar är rödlistade kan ett inventerings- och övervakningsprojekt bidra till en ökad kunskap om skogsvaxskivlingarnas aktuella status i landet. Det är vår förhoppning att denna bok ska kunna vara en hjälp i detta sammanhang.

Taxomomy, ecology and phylogenetic relationships of Bovista pusilla and B. limosa in North Europe

- Bovista limosa, described from Greenland, is a species characterised by a prominent, delimited peristome and a fimbriate stoma. Morphological observations have indicated the presence of a closely related species with different peristomal characters, observations that were further confirmed through a molecular phylogenetic study of the Lycoperdaceae where deviating sequences were tentatively named Bovista cf. limosa. Here, we show that Bovista limosa as presently understood consists of two species with slightly different morphology, different habitat preferences, and different albeit overlapping distribution ranges. The two species also have clearly distinct nuclear ribosomal sequences as evidenced by an analysis of the ITS and LSU regions. We demonstrate that Bovista cf. limosa is identical to Lycoperdon pusillum described by Batsch in 1789. Batsch’s fungus has been variously interpreted and is sometimes treated as a nomen confusum. We resolve this confusion by selecting a lectotype from Batsch’s original illustrations and an epitype from the material we have sequenced. A key to the small Bovista species discussed in the paper is provided.

Taxonomy and evolutionary relationships within species of section Rimosae (Inocybe) based on ITS, LSU and mtSSU sequence data

- The present study aimed at elucidating the structure of Inocybe subg. Inosperma sect. Rimosae but included also representatives from subg. Mallocybe and the genus Auritella. Phylogenetic relationships were inferred using ITS, LSU and mtSSU sequence data. The analyses recovered the ingroup as a monophyletic, strongly supported clade. The results indicate that recognizing Auritella on the genus level renders Inocybe paraphyletic. The species traditionally placed in sect. Rimosae were found to be distributed over two strongly supported clades, Maculata and Rimosae s.s. The Maculata clade clusters with sect. Cervicolores and the two represent subg. Inosperma in a strict sense. Rimosae s.s. emerges as an independent, supported clade well separated from Inosperma s.s. Twenty-one terminal groups were correlated with morphologically distinct species. In addition several taxa on single branches and minor less supported clades were recovered. A key to the identified species of the Maculata and Rimosae s.s. clades which occur in Northwest Europe is provided.

The non-coding oncogene: a case of missing DNA evidence?

- The evidence that links classical protein-coding proto-oncogenes and tumor suppressors, such as MYC, RAS, P53, and RB, to carcinogenesis is indisputable. Multiple lines of proof show how random somatic genomic alteration of such genes (e.g., mutation, deletion, or amplification), followed by selection and clonal expansion, forms the main molecular basis of tumor development. Many important cancer genes were discovered using low-throughput approaches in the pre-genomic era, and this knowledge is today solidified and expanded upon by modern genome-scale methodologies. In several recent studies, non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), such as microRNAs and long ncRNAs (lncRNAs), have been shown to contribute to tumor development. However, in comparison with coding cancer genes, the genomic (DNA-level) evidence is sparse for ncRNAs. The coding proto-oncogenes and tumor suppressors that we know of today are major molecular hubs in both normal and malignant cells. The search for ncRNAs with tumor driver or suppressor roles therefore holds the additional promise of pinpointing important, biologically active, ncRNAs in a vast and largely uncharacterized non-coding transcriptome. Here, we assess the available DNA-level data that links non-coding genes to tumor development. We further consider historical, methodological, and biological aspects, and discuss future prospects of ncRNAs in cancer.

- This article explores two works by Swedish artists Emanuel Cederqvist and Henrik Andersson that relate to the vast alpine areas of Norrland in the far north of Sweden. In both works, the artists relate their experiences of the area as it exists today as well as the layers of its history through both archival material and their own photographs. More specifically, both artists use material that show how the area was becoming an increaingly popular destination for researchers, explorers, and tourists in the beginning of the last century. Other archival material reveal aspects of military and colonial history as well as the history of the Sámi populations of the region. In the article, I explore these works and the multi-layered histories that they relate to with the help of Walter Benjamin’s version of historical materialism, in which history is approached through images in the present, rather than a narrative of events structured in chronological order. From this perspective, the history of the area is engaged with as physical and emotional, as well as cognitive, experiences, taking place in what Benjamin refers to as now-time, with associations that take off in many different directions. © 2021 The Author(s). Summary: The Swedish artist Tomas Lundgren’s series The Task of Mourning (2019) consists of nearly-but-not-quite perfect reproductions of photographs from the first half of the twentieth century. Through painting inexact copies of photographic remnants from this time in European history, the series can be seen as a slow contemplation of this historical period. In this article, I discuss theories of mourning–as well as of the associated notion of melancholia – and explore ways in which these notions can be understood as processes that take place in the physical body as much as in the mind. In the same way, I look at the process of painting and the work of art as bodily acts. With Lundgren’s series as access points, the article engages with both mourning and visuality as embodied and affective processes – in which collective memory and personal experience co-exist within the same dimension. From this perspective, I discuss what takes place in the series as both a working-through, and a holding on to, ideas and affective associations related to this collective history.
